It is as it has always been.  Some prospects pan out, some don't.  The prospect you never acquire will never work out for you.

Honestly i wish we were talking about what hitter(s) we could add but I don't think this is that year.  

Realistically the primes for the core of this team don't align with Skubal to trying to add some other younger prospects makes sense in that regard too.

Not a "fixture", but he's been quite good every year when healthy.

Its his only choice. He doesn't make trades. If the Tigers are way out of a playoff spot at the deadline, functional teams would trade pending free agents. Get some prospects a bit further along than high school players the draft picks would get you. This may be a good chance for Harris to prove he's a good GM.

Speaking of starting pitchers, how safe is Flaherty? We have a few starting pitchers coming back soon, Melton, JV, Eventually, Jobe and Skubal. Jack may be headed to the BP? I sure hope Verlander is effective...

He is useless right now.  I don't see how he's going to help in the bullpen with all the walks.  Maybe, mop up duty to save the rest of the bullpen.

His salary worries me. With his contract, will Hinch be obligated to run him out there every 5 days? Send Montero packing? Ugh...the horror...

Or if enough get healthy he needs to go to the scrap heap, some team will grab him.

That’s great and I love it when he is quite good, but staying on the field is also a skill.

My only hang up with that strategy is that more than likely those players will be 3-4 years away from helping if everything goes right.  So are we going to “waste” Greene, Dingler, McGonigle and Clark’s next 3+ seasons waiting for draft picks to develop to be the help we need?  There’s enough to build around right now—so why not use the deadline to go get what you need to help immediately?  We will probably have a top 5-10 draft pick the way things are going anyway.

As for Flaherty…..the last few outings he’s started off fairly strong and then falls apart after 2 innings.  I think you could possibly convert him to the pen and have a productive short reliever.  Hopefully he’d uptick his velocity too—because low 90s fastball as a starter is not helping him when he doesn’t have much control.

I have zero hope for Olson right now.  Any return to form and long stretch of help should be considered a surprise bonus.  Don’t plan around him for next year and beyond.

so for this season, Jack's best inning is his second with a 2.45 ERA.  In the first inning of his 11 starts he  has a 5.7 ERA  with 6 walks, 15 K and 3 HR. But still, since for Flaherty so much of his success seems tied to his FB velo - it he can come out throwing hard that could be a key to better success in short outings. OTOH, throwing harder might send his command completely into the toilet. 

But what else are they going to do? They have to try to get some kind of value out of him.

not every starter who moves to the pen is magically fixed and we need to stop thinking it

There is no way that the Tigers will resign Skubal. Add to that the Tigers will not get any immediate help at the major league level in a trade. At best they get 4 or 5 prospects which only about two of them ever reach the Tiger's major league roster as mediocre players.  This is just my prediction based on the Tigers' trading history.  I certainly hope that I am wrong.

I might be more inclined to take a better guy who needs another year or two than a worse guy who's ready right now.
