A few things...

1. I actually hope Sacramento takes Schroeder and forces us in another direction. Schroeder was fine, but his ability (or willingness) to get to the basket and create for others didn't impress me, he's small, and he's not a floor spacer. At least give me someone who can shoot the three reliably while we're developing all of these other players who can't.

2. After listening to Trajan's presser rather than just going off of the quotes, it's not as simple as "we aren't going to be aggressive." He said they're going to keep their options open for a trade like what Orlando did as long as they don't have to mortgage the future. Maybe that's not going to materialize, but I think it's a little more nuanced than "we want to run it all back" as I've been hearing the media say. They want to be smart about it.

3. Trajan didn't seem like he was in a rush to sign extensions with Ivey and Duren. He very much acted like it was no big deal if they go into restricted free agency next offseason.

4. He also said they want to bring back the 3 vets, but also that they're doing their due diligence in case that doesn't happen to find replacements. Essentially, he left the door open.

Summer League starts July 10th in Vegas.  No schedule or roster yet.

There are two other summer leagues in California and Utah, but Detroit doesn't usually participate in those.  I think both of those start July 5th.

Post-Draft 2025 Cap Space and Spending Power Projections

He says Brooklyn is the only team we are certain will have cap space.  Just over $37 million.

Pistons are in the next group with only Memphis.

Quote

Swing Cap Space and Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception Teams – 2 Teams

  1. Detroit Pistons: up to $16.9 million in cap space
  2. Memphis Grizzlies: up to $3.2 million in cap space

The Pistons could be a cap space team this summer, creating up to $16.9 million to spend. That could aid in bringing back Malik Beasley, if he’s looking at more than the Non-Taxpayer MLE (NTMLE). If Detroit can get Beasley to come back for the NTMLE, they’re better off staying over the cap and using various Bird Rights to re-sign players like Dennis Schroder and Tim Hardaway Jr.

I know some were interested in him.

Does this mean they don't have the money to retain NAW? I'm guessing Langdon wants Beasley back, but NAW would be a clear upgrade as a 2-way player.

Looks like they can still keep him, but it puts them in the 2nd apron.  I think they would want to avoid that, so they would probably let him go.

So free agency has sorta kinda already started.  Once the finals ended teams were allowed to start negotiating with any free agent that ended the season on their roster.

At 6PM June 30th (Monday), teams are allowed to start negotiating with all free agents.  But nobody can sign yet.

July 1st - July 5th all rosters are frozen.  No trades, cant sign anyone (Maybe your draft picks), etc.  They use this time to collect the financials from last season and set the new salary cap.  The cap is 51% of last years basketball related income.

July 6th - This officially starts the new 2025-26 season.  Teams can now sign free agents and make trades.  Some of the trades announced the past week or so will now be completed.

They changed restricted free agency a few years ago.  I think now, when a restricted free agent signs an offer sheet with another team, his original team has two days to match it.  Once a player signs an offer sheet, he can no longer be signed and traded.  The old rules let players sign the offer sheet, then a S&T could be negotiated.  Restricted free agents can be signed and traded, but it has to be negotiated before the offer sheet is signed.

July 1st is when extensions can start for guys coming off of rookie contracts.  Ivey and Duren are the only two Pistons players eligible for this.  They can sign an extension up to the first regular season game.  The leagues first game, not necessary the Pistons.  If they don't sign an extension by then, they can no longer sign one and will enter restricted free agency next summer.

October 31st - Teams have until Halloween to exercise team options for guys on rookie deals.  This would be Holland, Sasser, and Thompson.  Rookie contracts are 2 years guaranteed with team options for years 3 and 4.  If an option is not picked up the player is a free agent next summer.

June 29th, 2026 - Qualifying offers have to be offered to guys on rookie deals entering free agency next summer.  So Duren and Ivey.  Actually, Smith and Harper too.  It's a 1-year offer at a price determined by the previous seasons salary.  If a team doesn't offer it, the player enters free agency next summer as an unrestricted free agent instead of restricted.  If a team/player can not negotiate a new contract next summer, the player can sign the QO, play the 1 season under it, and becomes an unrestricted free agent the next summer.

There is a 36% chance I just made all of this up.

why santi?

They wanted Reid and now Aldama, so it sounds like they really want  a big that can shoot.

Problem is, he is pretty soft.  Not physical at all and he is a bad defender.  Slow feet, can't guard the post or the perimeter.  But he shot it well last year for a big, so people forget about the rest of his game.  Even worse, he was bad playing next to a good defender in JJJ.   Normally, a guy like that will make you look a little better.

There aren't a ton of options if they're looking for a replacement for Fontecchio at the backup PF. Santi isn't a bad option depending upon what he'll cost. He'd certainly be a much better (and younger) version of Tek. I've heard a lot of Portis talk as well, but I think that's just fans speculating.

Their plan obviously isn't to push in their chips and instead to improve on the margins. If that's the case, then I'm ok with Santi on a small sign-and-trade and getting NAW in free agency.

Ivey takes THJ's minutes, NAW takes Beasley's, and Santi takes Tek's. Any minutes that were going to Sasser (if he's still around) would go to Lanier. Those are all solid upgrades.

The question remaining after that is whether they want to trust Ivey to be the backup PG again (I hope not) and where they're going to find one without much cash to spare. Oh, and a legitimate 7 footer to replace Bball Paul on the bench would be nice insurance.

Cost is definitely the key with him.  I worry about him being restricted.  You normally have to overpay so his original team doesn't match.  No clue what Memphis looks like cap wise, though.  Maybe it will be a struggle for them to keep him.

I also agree about backup PG.  Ivey as the secondary ball handler with Cade on the floor or the backup PG is fine.  Not real interested him as the lead ball handler for extended minutes, though.  I'm also done with Sasser, so hopefully they don't feel he is the answer.

For the love of God I hope Beasley is not involved with Jameson Williams.

Funny my mind also went to Williams I was like "what is with Detroit athletes and getting caught gambling?" But for the record I know you were just kidding but to clear things up from what I could find it sounds like the stuff being in question was from the 23/24 when he was with Milwaukee.

I made my feelings on Beasley know during the season.  Not opening that can of worms again.

I would have been fine with a 1-year deal.  But no way should they have given him a 3-year deal.  He has been bad in the playoffs his entire career.  We are now at a  point where we have to take into consideration how a guy performs in the playoffs.  Moving on will be a good thing.
