That is/was a thing for MLB players.  I remember an article in SI back when they were legitimate.  You spend 10-20 years married but never see each other for half the year.  Then you retire and find out "We don't really like each other...." or at least "I don't like this life...."

Not just for MLB players. Kids leaving home and one or both spouses retiring is a big change in the relationship dynamic and I've seen some separations come out of that. My wife and I are empty nesters but still both working - I guess when I retire I'll promise to spend to more time out of her hair on hobbies like banter about trade deadline rumors.

yep, good point.  We noticed a trend in our peers when the kids got to be in HS or later... a rash of divorces.  My wife was freaking out.  LIke it was contagious.

But the trade proposed 2 top 10, plus Jobe and other pieces. This trade would greatly Trump what Det gave up for Miggy and Dontelle

This is the Tigers forum. Careful with your CAPS. 😉

My memory of April 2008 was that I thought the Marlins had traded us two problem alcoholics for all our best prospects.

When game 163 came around in 2009, Miggy was having some sort of problem prior to that game that he had to apologize for.  So, while a great player...he was a tinderbox that maybe the Marlins thought he needed to be sent out of Miami.  Dontrelle also was dealing with things and ultimately he could not return to his previous effectiveness.

While I can see where you’re coming from, I do like the idea of Miggy wearing the Olde English D in the Hall.

https://www.mlive.com/tigers/2009/10/police_called_during_tigers_sl.html

According to Birmingham Police Chief Richard Patterson, Roseangel called 911 at 6 a.m. Saturday morning after the couple fought because he came home intoxicated and loud after drinking at Birmingham's Townsend Hotel with an unspecified fellow Venezuelan who plays for the Chicago White Sox.

There was one Venezuelan on that White Sox team.

I think some guys are underrated because they don't play a premium position, or all they do is hit. Gimme hitters, please!

Gimme hitters that can field and fielders that can hit.

Somebody I have my eye on is Mike Soroka of the Nationals. Yes at first glance you see his ERA is above 5 but that doesn't tell the whole story. He has an xERA at 3.19 which is elite, has elite K% along with BB%. Also has been pitching better of late. I would gamble on things correcting themselves and him getting luckier in the second half.

Also last year when put in relief he excelled with a 2.75 ERA and 15 k/9, so even if we don't need him as a starter in the playoffs he could be the swing and miss guy we desperately need out of the bullpen. Also just 27 so somebody that we could look to keep if he performs well down the stretch.

I think if Harris makes a move, its going to along the lines of "hidden" numerals as you allude to here.  I think he's likely to acquire a non name that most folks are going to find underwhelming at first blush.  But upon further inspection/explanation, some of those folks will say, oh, sure, I saw that coming.

there's also a universe where we have two hall of fame starters in their prime and get swept by the giants.  😞

There is not a universe with an optimistic buddha.  None, zip, zero, zilch, not'ta.

Soroka would be fine as the third-best pitcher acquired at the deadline. If he's the headliner, this season will not end well.

I think that's too simplistic of an opinion.  Harris sold last season.  How did that work out?

With a season that exceeded expectations but was still a disappointment. How's that for nuance?

Baseball is a fickle sport. Windows can close as fast as they open. This team has a legit shot this year. The Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies, Astros are all vulnerable. And while a handful of trades won't guarantee success, there's at least the chance to improve on status quo.

FWIW, even though it ended in sucky fashion, I was not at all disappointed with last season.

Me neither.  It was a historic finish and a great story.  The post-season is mostly a crap shoot.  If you base your satisfaction on whether or not your team wins the World Series, you have a 97% chance of being disappointed!

So 18 days until the trading deadline. I don’t know if the chances of getting a good deal depends on waiting until the last moment or not.

With so many potential buyers, the few sellers will probably put a high price on any team that doesn’t want to wait until the trade deadline.

Is this one of the 87.2% of statistics that are made up?

29 out of 30 rounds up to 97%.  I know it's different for different teams, but it averages out to 97%.

sellers holdout for best deal, so unless you are offering 1 of the big 5 now, sellers will wait to see if you blink

I sure am glad that the people at the helm of this team have as much intelligence and practical experience as they’ve already demonstrated.

Last year, when we all thought they had thrown in the towel and given up, things turned around in a remarkable manner.

I don’t know if we can expect lightning to strike twice, but if necessary I’m willing to stand in the rain in open field in my bare feet near a body of water holding a 20 foot metal rod in the air if that’s what it takes.
