Goff: He needs a good team around him and McVay to be successful. That’s why we need Stafford.

Stafford was 0-3 in the playoffs in 12 years. That’s because he didn’t have a good team around him and a coach like McVay. Hall of fame.

We all watched Stafford every week and knew he had unmatched arm talent and toughness. It is a shame he didn’t have a more talented roster around him. Glad he won one, and if the Lions don’t win it, I’ll be pulling for him

Florio and Simms this morning: Stafford is not only on HOF trajectory, he is forcing himself into the conversation about the all time greats at QB.

Top 10. The guy had a great career.

It’s a rare kind of quarterback who can overcome bad coaching, a bad roster, and bad management to survive in this league, but Stafford shows it’s possible. To that end, I give him a lot of credit. He’s tough as nails and a really good quarterback.

But to the extent he’s revered by some in this town as God’s gift to Detroit football for a decade, I don’t get it. He was never good enough to lead us to win a playoff game, or even a division. And if the counter is that he was good enough, then he needed to do it. Guys like Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow have played in conference championship games. Teams like the 2024-2025 Commanders have played in one.

Goff is and always will be miles above him in my mind as the power rankings of Detroit QBs goes.

Today, for a single game, would I swap Goff for Stafford? Absolutely, no questions asked.

Today, would I trade Goff for Stafford straight up? I would consider it but no. Stafford’s back is too fragile at this point.

As a fan base we may end up (and may already have ended up) preferring Goff over Stafford and that is perfectly reasonable due to the unprecedented success we have had under Goff. But let’s not kid ourselves, Stafford would also dominate with this roster.

I wouldn't. I think Goff is the perfect QB for this team and for this city.

it's the paradox of QBs. For most athletes, physical ability is the bottom line. NFL QB is one where the mental part of the game is just as important, and you can't see it on field like you can a great throw or scramble for a 1st. It only shows up in the score at the end. Goff has plenty of arm and excellent accuracy, but otherwise he is not an exciting athlete to watch, so he just has be satisfied with winning. :classic_wink:

I agree that Goff is, but I also think Stafford would be as they are fairly equal in pre-snap intelligence, and his toughness is/was perfect for Detroit.  Both completely healthy it's a toss-up IMO.  At this point in their careers, I definitely am glad to have Goff.

Yes, at this point in their careers I am glad to have Goff.

I bet if you were to ask 100 players, coaches, GMs, and scouts who you would rather have in their prime, 100/100 would pick Stafford. Many of them would answer before you finished the question.

Stafford is like the Nolan Ryan of QB's. He will go down as one of the greats and get into the hall of fame but at no point in his career was he considered to be one of the best 2 or 3 at this position. He has been very good for a very long time.

Goff seems like he is more dependant on being in the correct offense with some talent around him.

The defender didn't even look back for the ball. He would have had to throw it really high right at some defenders. But then they could run it back....shoulda punted

Just saw the play again. Didn’t actually overthrow it like I remembered. AJ Brown just didn’t put any effort into catching that pass at all. Wild. Probably should have punted. That would have been the safest bet. It also took the game out of his team’s hands, so I at least understand the thought. In this league, expecting your best WR to win a 1-on-1 or draw a DPI is not a terrible call, it’s just much more of a risk. Throwing the ball to your tantruming child of a WR was probably the bigger mistake. At least they found out they can’t count on him when the team absolutely needs him now, in a game they won in the middle of the season, rather than in an elimination game.

AJ Brown probably thought he was a decoy route, because he should have just been a decoy route. It was a stupid play.

The obvious move was to punt it and make the Love-led, weapons-less, offensive line-depleted Packers drive 60 yards in <30 seconds. Instead they threw an extremely low-percentage pass and made them drive 25 yards in like 35 seconds. It was seriously boneheaded. Lucky for Philly (and the rest of the NFC North), they only drove 20.
