Appleton and JVR have been good additions to the lineup so far, great to see

Special thanks to that sub-par pro scouting staff. 😉

If they get blame for the misses, they should get credit for the hits.

But I think the scouting staff will suddenly start to look better now that the team has a more competitive roster and a more competitive coach. It will become rarer that they have to settle for the second or third or fourth best option on their FA lists just to fill a roster spot.

JVR, Ras and Elmer had some good shifts...Edvinsson was really really good

Elmer occasionally uses his size well to pinch off rushers and he came up with a few take aways.

Edvinsson has really upped his game though. There was one almost comical play where Edvinsson and a Panther were tied up fighting for possession at about mid-board in the Det end. Simon just sort of surrounded him and bulled the Panther player and the puck along the boards all the way to the mid line then politely disengaged. That was one way to clear the zone.

Panthers did well attacking the one man high on the Det PPs

i was surprised they outshot florida.  the panthers fell behind and then did their panther-thing of pressure.  seemed like they had the puck a lot but couldnt do anything with it.  regardless, a good win.  especially without raymond.

Wings pressured the puck much more effectively in their own zone than they would have last season. Panthers were there but it almost never turned into the normal extended shooting gallery session the Wings have been prone to giving up.

I don't want to get too head over heals about defending a Panther's offense without Tkachuk and Borkov, but the 1st step is win the games you should.

mbn, finnie, and appleton are making a big difference in how the forwards press.  young legs help a lot.

I've always thought Blashill and Lalonde were way too fixed on young players making mistakes and thus sitting them.  Yes they do, and they lead sometime to goals, But the problem with that analysis is the classic - "you can't prove a negative". How much do you lose the game overall because guys like Petry weren't making mistakes but weren't making plays or bringing anything positive to the effort either? I'm sure ASP made some mistakes last night, but he also got back a lot of pucks that the guys he replaced would not have.

Keep the eyes on the main chance: Are you winning or losing when a guy is in the lineup?

This was a huge pet peeve of mine with Blashill and a bit under Lalonde.  You'd have vets like Erne making dumb plays but only the kids ever got sat or called out in the media.  I feel like tough love doesn't work unless you apply it evenly, and it certainly didn't help with player development under those coaches.

Great period by the Wings.  ASP's first goal, the Lightning didn't have a shot on net until six or so minutes left in the period (despite having a PP), Gibson ended up making a couple nice saves and the Wings had other chances.  Good stuff!

Wings lead 1-0 after 1 in yet another game against an Atlantic division opponent. Speaking of which, Montreal doing some fun stuff in the early days of the season. Would be nice if for a change of pace the Wings and Habs could move up in the standings. Sick of Florida-Tampa-Toronto-Boston.
