Is he a bust or is he going to make Yzerman look foolish if he gets a chance to start somewhere else. Could be either one. I'm open to the idea that it was a bad pick and he never fully developed into what they were hoping for. But he's not been given a chance to succeed or fail at the NHL level. Quote

gehringer_2 Posted July 6 Posted July 6 Quote Yzerman doesn't like the big contracts being handed out. Doesn't know how comfortable Yzerman will be paying Cat what he's worth on the open market. - Wings are at a crossroads Great. Is Stevie Y going to become the Wings' Jim "I'd-rather-lose-than-pay-players" Campbell? Quote

Yep...they rode that "goalies can take awhile..big goalies even longer..to develop" train bout as long as they could. A 1st is a nice return for a damaged asset, but still... Had they drafted Wallstedt they'd look a lot smarter. IIRC...Ozzie was pretty insistent that Cossa was the better prospect, but it doesn't look like it now 1 Quote

If it had worked out he would have been playing in the NHL already. If he had been playing in the NHL already, maybe they don’t trade their first round pick at the deadline. If they don’t trade their first round pick at the deadline, they have it to draft JP. Instead they wasted five years on Cossa plus however long it takes for JP to make the team, assuming he makes it. 1 Quote

They are still in great shape at the position. Quote
slothfacekilla Posted July 8 Posted July 8 Complete speculation by me, but I feel like they likely would have traded Cossa even without Augustine and Postava in Grand Rapids. The fact that they didn't give him any NHL run makes me believe they didn't think he was an NHL caliber goalie, and the Red Wings probably would have been stoked to get a first round pick for Cossa either way. Especially before they were forced to show him off against NHL shooters. The goalie depth is just a nice bonus after their inability to develop (or accurately asses) Cossa. I'm really interested to see how Cossa does in Utah after Detroit's unwillingness to give him some games. I still think there's a good goalie in there. The goalie coaching down in Grand Rapids seems like it is top notch so it may not be likely he turns into an above average starter if they didn't completely screw up their evaluation of him. It does seem like he still has stuff to work on in his game. Maybe having a lighter load in the NHL next season will help him since he faded at the end of these last two seasons. 1 Quote

Perfect being the enemy of the good? Sometimes knowing how to work around a guy's limitations is how you get to success. So we had a developing goalie they didn't like because he was running out of gas in a full season of work, and they were starting an NHL goalie that was running out of gas being overplayed because Talbot was terrible. No possibility of a fit there with two guys sharing the work so neither wore down? I know I'm just a dumb fan...... Quote
slothfacekilla Posted July 8 Posted July 8 I assume there was more they didn't like about his game outside of running out of steam but I'm also just a fan Quote

This is one of Yzerman’s successes, along with building an elite first defensive pairing. Maybe the pieces are in place for a good to very good defensive corps. But the kid earned a start and it was a mistake that Stevie didn’t give him one. Quote
buddha Posted July 12 Posted July 12 vancouver inquired about shane wright. seattle asked for zeev buium or tom willander. so if you ask about shane wright, be prepared to be asked for simon edvinsson. Quote

slothfacekilla Posted July 28 Posted July 28 I would be shocked if they went with former players after the Yzerman saga but maybe I'm just being naive. Not saying it would be bad, just that it seems like something the org might be adverse to I dunno. I do see plenty of smoke about Chris I being an analytics lover. I didn't realize he played hockey too. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted July 28 Posted July 28 Rutherford and Shanahan would be disasters as GM. Neither have adopted to the modern game and neither strike me as GMs that would model a team off of Carolina, Florida, or Vegas using analytics. No thanks to either of them. Quote
Shinzaki Posted July 28 Posted July 28 LaPointe has been Montreal's director of amateur scouting ...they have drafted well. Much better than us anyway Quote

Much better than us anyway I read recently that Lapointe used to do the NFL combine bench of 225 lbs for something like 25 reps, and he made lifting more popular in the locker room. I always liked him as a player. Thinking of him is a reminder that, in addition to all their skill, the Red Wings dynasty was very hard to play against. Good to see he's doing well in his second career. Quote
