Are they actual contenders?      Like for the NBA Finals?      This team is pretty good.

Hey, maybe they can add to their roster at the trade deadl...........oh wait, I forgot,  Detroit teams don't do anything at trade deadlines.

I'm not going to get too excited. They have certainly become a fun team but they are still too unbalanced, the lack of shooting is still likely going to be their downfall against teams that can play better interior defense.

I think they have a championship level defense and a 1st round level offense.

There are 3 or 4 team statistics to look at to correlate to winning.  The Pistons do well in most of them.

PIE is the first one.   Detroit currently ranks 7th in PIE.

Quote

What is PIE?

It is a simple metric that gives an excellent indication of performance at both the team and player level. It’s a major improvement to our EFF Rating. Notably 2 things changed: (1) We included Personal Fouls, (2) We added a denominator. We feel the key here is the denominator because it acts as an "automatic equalizer". Using the denominator, we find there is no need to consider the "PACE" of the statistics that are being analyzed. In its simplest terms, PIE shows what % of game events did that player or team achieve. The stats being analyzed are your traditional basketball statistics (PTS, REB, AST, TOV, etc..) A team that achieves more than 50% is likely to be a winning team. A player that achieves more than 10% is likely to be better than the average player. A high PIE % is highly correlated to winning. In fact, a team’s PIE rating and a team’s winning percentage correlate at an R square of .908 which indicates a "strong" correlation. We’ve introduced this statistic because we feel it incorporates a bit of defense into the equation. When a team misses a shot, all 5 players on the other team’s PIE rating goes up. The formula for PIE can be found here in the Glossary.

Net Rating is the next big one to look at.  Detroit currently ranks 7th in that as well.

Shooting is the box score stat that has the greatest correlation to winning.  They rank 24th in EFG%, so not so good.  But they are ranked 1st in defensive EFG%.  I would feel much better if they could get their EFG% up around 15th.

Another problem come playoff time will be coaching.  JB does a great job getting guys to buy in, play hard, and play defense.  But he struggles with lineups and more importantly, with Xs and Os.  Remember the last play against Chicago?  Pistons inbound to Cade, zero screens, just let him try to get a 3PTA by going one on one?  That is a problem in the regular season, its even more exaggerated come playoff time.

Not advocating they fire JB.  The man deserves another couple of shots in the playoffs for what he has built here.  But I would be shocked when they start becoming a danger to make the Finals if JB is coaching this team.

they've played one really good team (the bulls are a mirage) and they got their doors blown off.

i'd like to see them compete against the better teams before seeing how good they are.  we'll know more in january.

i'm wondering how good the cade to duren pipeline will be once the playoffs start and teams focus on taking it away.  do they have enough shooting to open up the floor when teams are trying hard on defense on every possession?

otoh, the east is so weak.  they could be the third best team just by staying healthy and being above average.

I really hope this young roster is ready for the all out intensity of something as important as The NBA CUP!!!

In addition to the money, the winning team this year gets to have their least favorite beat writer killed.

This right here. I love this team, but there are some major issues with their offense. You can see when they go through stretches where they don't score for 4 minutes it's because they didn't manage to get any stops and get out in transition. If the other team gets hot, the Pistons offense tanks and that's a problem. They're simultaneously fun and frustrating to watch. They need to find an answer in the half court and it can't be letting Cade get tripled every time down the court.

That said, this is a super young team building a really fun "defend and run" identity in only their second year with JB. I don't want them to make a Blake Griffin move and screw it up. They should have a good feel for what they need by the deadline or this offseason. Question is whether or not the appropriate player to complete the roster will even be available or if we'll have the assets to go get him if he is.

They have all their picks and a diminished asset in ivey.

holland could intrigue some teams.

they will all ask for ausar and the pistons will say no.

robinson's contract is born to be traded.

I think any package Detroit can put together is more likely to land a good player and not a star.

Also, no way I'm making a trade with Detroit and not landing Stewart.  Even if you're rebuilding, he could be flipped for more assets.  He might be their best trade chip right now after Cade.

It really is a dumb idea and I hate the court color schemes.

I just turned it on. What happened?

Rolled his ankle.  I don't think it's serious.  Maybe a week at the most.  I think there is a chance we see him Sunday.

Blaha said Stewart was filling in for Harris. Does anyone else think Stew should be starting?

Edit; oh, I see, he's getting starter minutes off the bench. Still...these slow starts ..ugh
