gehringer_2 Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Maybe the fact that they hadn't tried harder to stay under the projected limit all summer should have been our 1st clue they had already settled on moving Skubal(?). Quote

CaliforniaDreaming Posted August 2 Posted August 2 (edited) So, actually the Skubal trade includes not only the 3 players we received, but also moving 2 draft picks from after the 4th round to after the 1st round. That seems like a pretty significant addition to the deal. I know it could be argued that they could have gotten under the tax by trading some other player, but they certainly wouldn't have gotten the prospects that they did. Maybe they thought this deal was the best of all worlds: lose only one player (although he his your best player) to get some good prospects, get under the tax threshold to save your good draft picks, keep some semblance of playoff hope alive by keeping the rest of the team in tact. I’m confused about the draft picks that you mentioned, the picks moving from after the 4th to after the 1st. Quote

Only one pick, if you keep Mize, unless the plan is to offer a QO to Flaherty. Torres is ineligible. And this assumes the current rules hold. It sounds like there may be signifant draft changes in the upcoming negotiations. Quote

Well, I guess we will see what happens before the trade deadline and what happens with the rules in the upcoming negotiations. Quote

Hard to offer Skubal a QO when he plays for a different team... 😉 Still can offer the QO to Mize though... as long as he's not traded. Quote

CaliforniaDreaming Posted August 3 Posted August 3 I need to stay in my lane on these things...this certainly is not in my wheelhouse. Question: wouldn't it be 2 picks if McG wins ROY and Mize turns down a QO? (Maybe the ROY award isn't affected? Maybe Mize is traded or accepts the QO...) Quote

PPI pick is after the first round regardless. 1 Quote

The pick for McG winning ROY isn't affected by our CBT number. We would get that either way after the 1st round. The only ones that move from the 4th to the 1st are compensation for losing FA's who were offered a QO. 1 Quote

I think it depends on how he finishes the season and what other free agent pitchers are available. I hope we can avoid throwing &15M at a flawed free agent starter who will take a one-year deal. I’d rather we spend the $22M on Flaherty in that scenario. The devil you know. if he gets a QO, he’s not turning it down, so we wouldn’t be doing it to get the draft pick. No team would surrender one to sign him. Quote

If washed up JV types cost you 1/15, then Jack is worth 1/23 or whatever it is. I think he would probably accept it, though, for the same reason he opted in to a similar 1 year option entering this year. He's been really good in June and July prior to the injury. Quote
1984Echoes Posted August 3 Posted August 3 Fair enough. But I think you ended up in the same position I am since... if he accepts the QO (most realistic path) then we still do not get a 2nd QO/FA pick next year. Realistically, that is. Quote
