Good I've said for 2-3 year now that they needed to trade him.   He's the constant in their playoff failure.   Use his value to reset the team to win.   Allow another voice to be the leader in the room.

Larkin is doing Stevie a big favor but I’m not sure he’s smart enough to realize it.  This team needs a big shakeup and also a change of Captain.  They can do both with one move.

Lets assume this is true.

If so not surprising. Seems to be enough mutual unhappiness with each other on the part of both parties so probably in both sides' interests at this point.  I'm sure he'll do well wherever his lands - if he can still stay healthy anymore.

I imagine Chris Ilitch will be less than thrilled hearing a player wants off one of his teams. He like to think he runs a player friendly operation.

the other question is whether Yzerman can swing a productive trade.

This is a blessing in disguise. This rebuild was going nowhere and needed to be blown up and started over. Now we get to do just that.

Dylan Larkin is not a #1 center. In order to win in the NHL you either need to build a deep, phyiscal team like Florida or Vegas or you need to have a #1 center, capable of getting you 90-95+ points per season. Right now we are neither deep nor physical. We also lack a #1 center capable of producing 95+ points in a season and really being a top line guy who can make the wingers around him better.

If Larkin wants out good, fine. I'm starting this rebuild over and getting rid of virtually everyone over the age of 32 on this roster. I'm starting off my rebuild of the rebuild by offering Larkin to San Jose immediately and asking for their #2 pick in the draft this year. San Jose has a good, young core of players. A guy like Larkin can give the Sharks the veteran presence they need and help them win now as they are come out of their rebuild phase. The official deal I would offer them is Larkin for #2 overall pick + 2026 2nd round pick.

maybe the joke here is instead of Larkin talking Hughes into wanting to come to Detroit, Hughes talked him in joining him :classic_laugh:

Yzerman's plan on arrival was to have built a team to challenge for a cup while Larkin was still in his prime. Larkin will be 30 next season, so that plan is looking impossible to achieve - at minimum they are still a couple of years away.

It's easy enough to say 'start over' but there won't be much joy at LCA if they now miss the playoffs a couple more times.

Well I hope he wants to go to San Jose then because I want that #2 overall pick in this year's draft . If we somehow could land Gavin McKenna that would be a real blessing. If not, one of Ivar Stenberg or Caleb Malhotra is probably the player I am targeting. Stenberg looks like he could be an 80+ guy in the NHL and a pure goal scorer, which we need in the worst way. I've read and seen that he is an elite skater already too and very crafty with the puck on his stick. Put the puck in the net and win games with this guy. Malhotra lacks some of the production you'd want from a true #1 center, which is a concern. I don't just want to trade Larkin only to draft another Larkin. But from reports I have read this guy is a dog on the forecheck and has the skill to be a goal scorer. I've read Nick Suzuki comparisons which would be awesome and I've also ready Dylan Larkin comparisons, which would be less exciting and a bit of an LOL.

This may turn out to be the best thing that could have happened for Yzerman. Larkin is on a great contract for his production so should fetch a premium in picks and prospects. He is already at the edge of his prime. And something is off about the locker room culture. It might be good to put the C on Seider and clear the room of the stale air from the glory days.

if true, it would give them clarity on doing a new rebuild.

larkin's contract has aged pretty well in the cap expansion era.  its worth quite a bit, i think.

do you extend debrincat?  he's younger than larkin but will command $10+ on the open market.  does he want to stay if theyre in another rebuild?

do you trust this management group to do another rebuild?  i dont.

What would you ask in return for Larkin? Do you want draft capital? Are you trying to get a Top 5 pick in this year's draft given that it doesn't have a true #1 center? What are you looking for?

without larkin the wings have almost nothing at the most important position.  kasper looks more like a winger, danielson is MIA, and finnie was better on the wing.  copp is old and compher is useless.

im skeptical they can get a young center for larkin.  draft picks, sure.  but draft picks are years away.  seider will be 28 by the time a draft pick from this year begins to hit jis prime.

Looking at the stats for Centers, Larkin was 25th in points for the position this year.  Dude wouldn't even be on the first line for most teams.

we can bad mouth him all we want as rejected lovers do, but over his career he's proven he can elevate good players he's paired with and other GMs are going to see his performance at the Worlds with other good players in a brighter light than a season with one of the most overall offensively challenged line-ups in the league.

exactly. maybe a prospect but nobody very close to the NHL.Why do you want Larking if you have very good young center unless he's still at least a year or more away?

This may be the break with the current stalled plan the Wings need, but that doesn't mean the new plan is going to be very pretty for a while..

larkin also has a full no trade clause, so he can veto any trade.

yzerman wont **** around.  if he cant get value, he'll make him sit out.  ask jonathan drouin.

I've been advocating for a Larkin trade on the Tweetz for 2 years now.   I've got nothing against the guy but much as I said about the Tigers I think the Wings need a new "voice"/leader in the room.   Larkin has been the constant in the missing playoff/late collapse streak.   And yes it's unfair to pin it all on him but it's also fair to say that he's not been the solution.

I would first look for young NHL players then draft capital.  It'll be interesting to see how DeBrincat and Kane react to this.

could be, Yzerman might want to play hard guy, but OTOH, I don't think Ilitch would be happy to see those kind of dramatics.

I'd be fine if this meant Kane doesn't re-sign too honestly.  Might as well trade DBC unless he indicates he wants to stay to help the rebuild.  There is a chance he would, he at least plays like he gives a **** about dragging the team to wins when he can.

I guess we don't know how Yzerman will react, but you'd think the rational thing to do would be pull the plug and move all the vets you can get anything for, and 'Cat would pretty much lead that list after Larkin. Or Yzerman could get his back up and decide "I can dump Larkin and I'm going to otherwise carry on as planned" and we'll be a bad team for 10 years more.

If you're in management in US pro sports today, you just have to just admit the athletes (esp vets) are the ones in control - no sense getting stupid over it.
