Do we get extra money to cover them? Does it mean we'd have to spend less on later rounds? We get the extra slot $ for each pick. (We also have a Comp A pick) which would mean $10 plus mil just from the first round. (Our total pool this year was less than $10 mil. Quote

Pool would go hope cause it’s all based on picks you have but the idea is getting a more project able piece than draft. Tigers think they can still complete so if you get a guy in aa today that is more projects or than a guy who will start two levels lower three years from now Quote

Tiger337 Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Players with hefty body types tend not to age well, but they can have successful careers . The argument has always been that you don't sign those types of players to long term contracts, not that they can't be successful. He's 21, so we have a long way before we have to worry about that. The first step is to see how he fares against AAA pitching. Quote
1984Echoes Posted August 2 Posted August 2 This is the most closely reflecting how I feel about the trade (from ESPN): How would you rate Detroit's return for Skubal, from a 1-10? Kiley McDaniel: I'll say an 8.5, because it's likely the best they could get, roughly what was expected/is logical, but not the home run some were thinking could come in return for a truly elite talent. NorthWoods Posted August 2 Posted August 2 https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7486169/2026/08/02/tarik-skubal-trade-dodgers-tigers-return/ For those that want Keith Law's opinion: Detroit could walk away with an above-average starter who throws something like 140 innings a year, an above-average everyday right fielder and at least a quality reliever if not another starter. That’s quite a return for two months of any player, given how teams presently value years of control. I assume Tigers fans are ticked off right now, and I’m not here to invalidate your feelings. I would only counsel them that this deal may be better for the franchise in 2027 and beyond than you think at first glance. 4 1 Quote

He's can't miss. Now... I'm not saying he will be a superstar or anything like that in MLB... Just that he WILL play in MLB. With his swing and miss though (he's actually improved that this year I believe, in AA to 25%, where he was at 28% plus previously...?), there is a chance that he could disappoint in the way that Tork disappoints. Tork could be so much better if he made better/ more contact. We may feel the same way about Hope. But... If he's hitting .285 in MLB, with a .350+ OBP and a .450+ SP%... I think everyone will be pleased with his performance. And NOT really care about the K's... I would just be... a little reluctant to guarantee that. I 100% believe he'll make it to Detroit. But there's enough of a wide variance to expected MLB on-field performance that what he actually turns into is... uncertain. NorthWoods Posted August 2 Posted August 2 Another breakdown: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/49489687/mlb-2026-trade-deadline-tarik-skubal-los-angeles-dodgers-detroit-tigers-reaction Skubal is worth something like $30 million in trade value, give or take, and Hope gets you about three-quarters or more of the way there alone. Ryan is a big league ready potential impact starter who is older than a traditional prospect. (His negatives: injuries, hasn't quite done it yet. His positive: he's controlled through age 32 if/when he breaks through, and Detroit is good at developing that type of pitcher.) So he's a wild card with big upside and an ETA of basically now, and that pushes the total value a bit above Skubal's remaining value. Smith was an intriguing projection bet from the 2023 draft who couldn't throw strikes until this year, so he's a premium lottery ticket. Quote

We’re also comparing different organizational approaches. Dodgers, like the Astros, are good at developing players. The difference is that it appears the Harris-led development approach is more effective than Avila’s. Pitchers are a wild card because of injuries—Ryan is on the other side of that. For me, Hope looks like a better prospect than Cameron was, though I am surprised that Dax didn’t materialize into at least a 4th OF in MLB. Barring catastrophic injury, of course he'll play in the majors, but I don't know if that makes him "can't miss". I think of can't miss as someone who is going to be an allstar level performer. Hope could be that or he could be a lot less than that. Quote
