We could reverse it though: Is a comp pick better than the return? If you have to think about it for a minute then maybe the answer is no.

Not necessarily. It's a comp pick plus having Mize down the stretch and possibly in the post season

Mayfield was a first round draft pick.

And his changeup is his best pitch.

He's also a projectable lefty at 6'4" 200#'s.

Add on 15 #'s and can he tick up his FB to high-90's instead of mid-90's?

I just think both he and Brady Smith are not exciting guys RIGHT NOW...

But watch and see how they fill out/ develop over the next couple of years and MAYBE they become quite a lot more exciting. At this point... they look only like back of the rotation guys...

So...

We'll see.

If they develop, plus one for Tigers' scouts.

I will be interested in seeing how Mize finishes the season. Does he miss starts? Actual IL?

So maybe Harris has info that makes it shaky that Mize is going to contribute much the next 9 weeks. Not saying he’s pedaling damaged good, just scratch and dent sale.

I have to believe that Harris has all minor league players rated on a master list that updates frequently and Mayfield was rated higher than a comp pick and perhaps higher than the Padres. Baseball is still a scouts/analyst game.

Aah, yes, THIS!

The Tigers were tied for the best record in the AL at last year's deadline, with a healthy division lead. But Harris didn't do much to try to make the team better, I guess because the Tigers were good enough and the playoffs were safe.  The Tigers are 2.5 games out of of a playoff spot this season and 5.5 games behind the division lead, but Harris didn't do anything to make this year's team better, instead made it worse, because the Tigers apparently had no chance. So I guess the Tigers will never be active in improving at the trade deadline unless they are in that narrow window of no more than 2 games up on a playoff spot and no more than 2 games behind a playoff spot. Good to know.

I don't think it's quite that, but Harris and Ilitch did agree to a master plan to unfold over a period of time and they are sticking to that plan, which includes maximizing our true prospects on the field for the benefit of the Tigers, rather than using them as cards in a game of Pit. This overarching strategy has been public knowledge since September of 2022.

A lot of people will provide examples of seemingly good major leaguers acquired in exchange for seemingly inconsequential minor leaguers, and I probably won't have a good comeback for that. All I can say is this is the team we've chosen to follow, the Harris regime results have been pretty good to date, and I'm going to continue giving them the benefit of the doubt until they prove that they don't know what they're doing after all.

The trade is pretty much Mayfield for Mize. Wolf and Workman are just there for some alliteration

If the Tigers pitching coaches can fix Wolf:

Wolf > Workman

If they can NOT fix him...

Wolf < Workman.

I think Padres will get some use out of Workman... utility player use, so not much there. But I'll stand by my Tigers pitching coach comment vis-a-vis Wolf.

These deals sort of fell well short of the multiple impact players some are here were fantasizing about.

Their disappointment was well foretold.

Here's the guy we're probably going to see this year at some point. Hopefully with a very short leash.

This might simply be a your-garbage-for-mine second banana.

On the flipside:

The Tigers current top 5 (assuming Max Clark will soon no longer be considered a prospect), or call it offseason top 5

1. Bryce Rainer

2. Zyhir Hope

3. Josue Briceno

4. River Ryan

5. Kash Mayfield

Flukey is probably in there somewhere as well.

Riley Greene- FA after 2028

Dillon Dingler FA after 2030

Kevin McGonigle FA after 2035

Troy Melton FA 2032

Should have dealt these guys too. Teams would have sent some great majik beans for them with all those years of team control.

Who cares about a world series when you can fly the top farm system banner.

So cast your mind back to those glory days at Tigers AA with Faedo, Manning, Skubal, and Mize. The future of a rotation to conquer all.

Nothing now but dust and ashes my precious.

And Beau Burrows who was ranked MLB #77 at the end of 2018.
