value is determined by the participants in the exchange, not external sources.

Unless one of the participants is too naive to understand the value, which I am very confident is not the case here.

The guy sounds like a good kid. It gets me eagerly anticipating him getting to the majors.

The externality of his being a kid who can appeal to the African American pop of Detroit has got to appeal to Chris Illitch.

They are definitely lacking in that area.  Even some of the Blacks they do have, a lot of people don't even know they are Blacks.  Nobody would guess that Flaherty was Black if you didn't know.

Agreed. A bit like Granderson....just a really good kid. Something they had in common was they both had/have very good parents.

Have you seen how gay baseball twitter (or social media in general) love Flaherty?   I guess he's a smooth criminal to that demo.

Riley codes as redneck florida man but he's got some PR ancestry.

He has openly supported LGQBT rights which I don't think is common among baseball players.

Very uncommon for multiple reasons.

The Dodgers offer was better than the Brewers offer.

Agree and I don’t know why this is even debatable. I would take River Ryan over Jobe any day. It’s just he is old relative to prospects so people lose sight of the fact that you are acquiring his contract and he is cheap for the next 4-5 years, which lines up with his prime. The Brewers prospects other than Made weren’t that interesting, especially if reports are true they wouldn’t include a pitcher.

I am a prospect fanatic. I want to caution you saying River Ryan is better than Jobe. Jobe, if everything returns, can be a true #1 pitcher. He had the hype of Eury Perez pre-injury. Jobe and Ryan should make a fantastic 1-2 punch.

Sproat and Drohan project as #3-4 starters. Ryan should be a #2 with a possible #1 slot. Like you mentioned, he's the amazing age to where his arbitration is literally in his prime. I can't think of the last time that happened. Most guys getting called up now are 22-24......

The other prospects all project to be really good players. Luis Pena according to BA has a HIT 55, POW 50, RUN 70, FLD 40, ARM 60, BA Grade 60. That's an All-Star right there. But its 2B/SS (which we have quite a few of already).

Jett Williams is HIT 55, POW 45, RUN 65, FLD 50, ARM 60, BA Grade 55 (above average). But again SS/2B.

The offer the Brewers threw out there was extremely comparable to the Dodgers. Just it was INF player focused vs pitching. Brewers wanted to send us three infielders (which is by far our most depth in our system). Instead we got an OF, and two pitchers who should be in our rotation, one this year and one late next year/early 2028. Brady Smith is a stud and I firmly see him ascending prospect lists like crazy next year. I think the Tigers will have seven players in the top 100 prospects next year (eight if somehow Max Clark keeps his eligibility which I don't see happening). I think we'll have the #3 farm system behind the Dodgers and Rays going into next year barring trades.

Good time to be a Tigers fan. This team is young and reinforcements are on there way. Remember, not all will "hit" as prospects. But for the first time in a long time, we've given ourself the chance to have a decent pipeline that should feed a consistent winner. And we'll have 100 million (or so) to spend on FA's as well, especially once Baez's contract falls off after next year. Detroit is finally doing it right. It's about time.

Everyone loves prospects until they are called up and turn into Justin Henry Malloy.

Yep, because Malloy was a top prospect. 🤪

Both Ryan and Jobe are high risk high reward.  I m not counting on either one, but if one of them stays healthy and lives up to his potential, it would be huge.  Why do you think Ryan is better?  I was under the impression that Jobe had somewhat higher upside.  Ryan did show a little more in his brief MLB stint, but it was also at a more advanced age.

He was the #4 prospect in the organization in 2024.

Let's replace it with Jace Jung who was #1 in 2023.  Or Wilmer Flores, who was #2?  Is that better?

How did they rank across MLB?  I agree with your assessment that fans get too excited about prospects, but Ryan and Jobe are more highly regarded, so it's not a good comp.

Yes, they are pitchers with all the risk that go with that, but they do have very high upside.

Or Troy Melton or Kevin McGonigle or Riley Greene. You are right; there is far more miss than hit on prospects and the jump from AAA to MLB is honestly enormous but to only focus on the fact that more miss rather than hit or maybe don't reach the potential that people thought they could even if they end up being an overall solid player seems silly but I am someone who enjoys tracking players from the minors to the majors and if you don't that's fine I guess I prefer to live on the optimistic side of things because if I were to live on the other side what would be the point of even watching the team.

When it comes to prospects, I trust Harris and his scouts over anybody's opinion. Yes, many prospects wash out but I trust Harris to find the right qualities that will make an impact at the ML level.

Harris is not too great at selecting old pitchers, but he is good with the young prospects!

Jace Jung flamed out but had the Prospect pedigree that showed he might be a decent player. Jace Jung was lightyears ahead of Malloy. And, Jung can still be a 2nd division regular.

The prospect pedigree of the Tigers top 6 prospects are all ahead of Jung and Malloy. If Jung still has prospect eligibility, I think he'd be around 17-20 range in our prospect pipeline. Clark, Hope and Rainer are all lightyears ahead of where Jung ever was.... I'm not sold on Briceno. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he'll have a ton of success at MLB. And Man I pray I'm wrong there.

I mean in baseball.  Our organization prospect rankings don’t mean anything.  Malloy was always a flawed player who had a good eye and some pop with hope he could translate that to the majors, but was a longshot.

Malloy was a good example of the numbers saying one thing at a global level and just watching saying another. Malloy always had trouble actually barreling balls in the zone. He never should have been ranked that high in the 1st place, but all those walks inflated his OPS. There was little doubt he could never walk that much against MLB pitchers.

Every average player or better today is a hit as a prospect

Jobe had the 100mph fastball but very poor extension. He never had amazing results in the minors. He was hyped based on radar gun and draft status. I would be thrilled if he turned into a solid number 4 or 5 starter. I think Ryan can be a 2-3. Obviously both have injury risk.
