I do want to clarify that I love Edvinsson as a player despite thinking he isn't perfect.  I just think it is a bad idea to give him a cap hit higher than any other defenseman in the league last season (even with the cap going up).  That Byram deal does shake things up, maybe I'm like Yzerman and too stuck in the past.

$8 million per for Kane?   Jeez...that's a lot of money.  So if Larkin does come back...adding Arvidsson means we're treading water year over year.

Not looking forward to that

I wonder how he'll fare without DeBrincat. I was always impressed by how well DeBrincat could always anticipate what Kane was going to do.

Ehhhh you see guys working out in their old team's gear in the offseason a lot after trades/signings.  They get all of it for free so I they probably just use what's laying around.  He hasn't needed to have any other gear for years so he probably doesn't have anything else on hand.

The biggest shock is that he's actually skating right now after how his body looked at the world cup.

What is more likely: Larkin has no other workout gear than his Red Wings gear and just happened to post a video of himself working out in his Red Wings gear a few days after his GM-nemesis got fired, with no thought or awareness of how that might be perceived?

Or Larkin, who is on a multi-million dollar contract that he wants to collect on, has an agent who told him the trade demand hasn’t worked out and Detroit may be your only option so our PR team is going to start a strategy to rebuild the bridge we burned?

In the past few days I’ve seen or heard probably half a dozen NHL pundits say they expect Larkin to start the season in Detroit. Maybe he won’t. Maybe Chris will hire someone and give him another three years of runway and permission to ship Larkin out for picks. I don’t think that will happen but it might. But don’t be surprised if Larkin is there on the first day of camp.

Assuming Larkin comes back, he’ll have to get used to playing the villain. Frankly, he has needed a bit more villain in his game. What would happen if he comes back and decides he doesn’t need to be liked, he just wants to win, and he starts playing with a little more ferocity and edge? I’d like to see him spear a guy like Jamie Benn, for instance, and I think his teammates and the fans would appreciate this too.

i think larkin will be back in detroit because his restrictive list of teams he wants to be traded to is too small and no gm from detroit is going to trade him for a guy who will be here for one year (robertson), or garbage prospects and picks (every other team on his list).

detroit missed its window to deal him for good prospects or picks because yzerman didnt want to do that and those teams moved on (and it isnt clear they were prepared to deal quality for larkin anyway).

if larkin agrees to come back to the same situation he left, with the only difference being that the franchise icon in the front office is now gone, he will be booed mercillessly, and deservedly so.

i cant imagine he wants that.

both the wings and larkin have played this very poorly.

It’s interesting that neither Larkin or his representatives have said a word.  Not even planted leaks that agents like put out to the Eliotte Friedman’s of the world.  Tight lipped even as Larkin has been getting roasted.

We still have no reported reason for him wanting out, no comment on if he plans on honoring his contract if he’s not traded.   It’s weird as hell how they’ve chosen to play this out.

Yes, both sides have played this badly. Yzerman lost his job because he couldn’t get along with his team’s most important player. Larkin gave an idiotic ultimatum that his agent should never have allowed to get public.

Larkin will need to make the heel turn. Fans will fill his ears with boos. He will need to learn to draw energy from this.

After his trade request debacle do you really think he either cares about this or accurately considers what reactions will be?  I'm not sure why it is a stretch to think he's using the gear he has on hand, especially when we see guys wear the gear of their old teams all the time.  I'm not sure how working out in his Red Wings gear by himself mends any fences but I guess you could be right.

Could just be coincidence but it seems like Brisson put a PR campaign in place to try to force the trade. Wouldn’t we also expect him to put a PR campaign in place to help set expectations regarding Larkin’s likely return?

Not gonna happen and if does once it will end with the first goal scored.

All that matters on the ice is if Larkin is square with his teammates and none of us has a clue about how that is playing. Could be the disaster some think, or not, who knows? But every fan in Detroit can separate SY the failed GM from SY the hero player just like we have with Alan Trammell the HOF Series Hero SS and Alan Trammell the pretty incompetent Manager, Joe Dumars the hero player and Joe Dumars the failed GM, etc. It's not like Larkin will be responsible for pushing out a winning GM. He may have forced a move that many/most(?) fans have been waiting for/expected.

If he does come back, at a bare minimum, he will have to do an interview to clear the air with fans. I think you are right that a lot of fans, and probably even most, will forget about this after the first goal. But some people will hold the grudge forever.
