This is a band that could do no wrong between 2004 (Funeral) and 2013 (Reflektor). I feel like part of that is because of the scandal. People who once liked them have completely turned on them, but I am still not sure what happened. Was what he did illegal? Or just immoral? Because if we're going with immoral then there goes most of the music business. 1 Quote

oblong Posted May 23 Posted May 23 A friend and I had this conversation last night. who is the biggest/best artist that you know the least about? For me it was Springsteen and Jethro Tull. I know what they played on the radio, that's it. But i never dove in and listened on my own. I might do that now for Bruce. Quote
ewsieg Posted May 23 Posted May 23 I would probably need a list of the biggest artists as I wouldn't have even thought of Jethro Tull. I know they play a flute and beat out Metallica for album of the year, that's about it. I would gather you would probably really enjoy Springsteen's solo work. Much of it has a folksier feel. It actually helped me appreciate his E Street albums more as well. Quick plug for the Drew Lane show, one of the guys on the show (Jim) does his top ten list for every Friday show. Just a top ten of whatever thing Jim happened to think about that week. As he goes through the list and they'll discuss/argue. My point on this though is by listening to this, I've realized how little I know about bands that I thought I knew about. It's impressive just how much Drew knows about music. Quote
lordstanley Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) I've seen about 25 Springsteen concerns over the past 40 years in various cities across Canada and the U.S. as well as in France. Have been to Asbury Park too. I'd suggest starting with the Born To Run album front to back. If you like that, I can give you a whole bunch of directions to jump into. If you don't like that, you'll at least be now familiar with what is considered by most (not all) to be his greatest album and four of his best-regarded songs (Born to Run, Thunder Road, Backstreets, Jungleland). As for politics, it doesn't make me think either more or less of him, I'm there for the music only, but I have found that at the concerts at which he makes a 1 minute rant against GWB in 2004 or now Trump in Europe 2025 it tends to bring the vibe in the arena down compared to when he doesn't. I never like Springsteen when I was younger, outside of the Atlantic City album. As I've gotten older a lot of his songs really resonate with me now. I've been listening to a lot of his music lately. 1 Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted June 4 Posted June 4 I've been listening to a lot of Tanner Ursey lately. Turn off the radio, unless MCS is on and it's Ann Arbor's 107.1, and find the real music out there. Tanner Ursey is what real music can sound like written by a talented songwriter and not produced to make a corporation a large sum of money. Quote

Going on the playlist. 1 Quote

Tanner Ursey is someone you should add into your rotation and his upcoming album is going to be killer no doubt. Another one for you is neo-traditional country artist Jesse Daniel. He has a new album out called Son of the San Lorenzo too. I've heard the title track (below) and am looking forward to diving deeper into the album. 1 Quote
antrat Posted June 6 Posted June 6 My girl, Patty Griffin has her first new album in six years coming out in a couple months. Can't wait. She is a legend. 2 Quote
lordstanley Posted June 8 Posted June 8 (edited) What I am listening to? Shosholoza. It's a traditional South African song, mostly in Zulu language, that was sung by laborers in gold and diamond mines. The title translates as "Move Forward". But why am I listening to it now? Today was the Comrades Marathon, an event like no other. Despite the name, it's actually a 56 mile race/89 km. It's a road ultramarathon in South Africa that had 22,000 participants. Gets national TV coverage every year. Starts in the dark at 5:45am. Hard 12 hour cutoff. Every year there's great drama as a gun goes off at the 12 hour mark and if you're even 10 yards short of the finish officials jump in front of you and block you from finishing. Anyways, at the start, right after the national anthem they always play Shosholoza and people I know who have run it say it is an absolute goosebumps moment. The bottom of the three videos was posted hours ago and "Gerda" would go on to win the women's race. I've been to South Africa 4 times. South Africa has a lot of problems and has been the subject of bad press lately, but this moment always brings a smile. Edited June 8 by lordstanley Quote
lordstanley Posted Wednesday at 04:54 PM Posted Wednesday at 04:54 PM RIP Brian Wilson. Saw him in concert, solo, around 5 years ago. Health wasn’t great but he sang some, told good stories and had someone come on (his son IIRC?) for the high notes. 1 Quote

His last live music appearance was at Pine Knob, but he just basically sat at his piano and didn't do anything. It was basically a Brian Wilson Appreciation Concert, but at least Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin were there. So there was that connection. Quote
