  1. Truth is, a lot of the programs that might help stem the flow of poor migrants, like the Peace Corps and/or USAID programs, are ones that the current regime has cut to the bone. Seems as though the best way to help with the issue is to work with the countries to help combat poverty (for example). The cynical side of me is that many of the extreme Republicans secretly want the borders open, not only for cheap labor but so they can continue to use it to rile up their voters.

  2. Kurtz given the night off. When asked whether he wanted to face Skubal, I wonder whether Kurtz begged off by saying “the horror, the horror”.

  3. Fun fact: Jacob Wilson has struck out in only 7.6% of at bats. Only two qualified hitters have struck out at a lower clip than that. One hundred years ago, in 1925, 63 qualified batters struck out at a lower rate than Jacob Wilson does this year.

  6. again, because powerful economic interests didn't want a discernible impact on the latter. They want cheap labor.

  7. still an A+ draft. Hooker's advanced age (3 years younger than Goff) always made him an odd fit, but totally reasonable to grab a guy who looked like a 1st round pick after putting up video game numbers in the SEC in the 3rd round. Martin never made any sense. A small school guy with at best average production vs. meh competition. Then puts up horrible combine score. Pretty clear he does not have "it" like so many other guys. Not sure what they ever saw, except huge size?

  14. Dems may have had the votes in theory, but you are correct to the degree there was no immigration bill all Dems would agree on at that point. The best chance at reform was with Bush, there was an absolute majority given the sum of Dem and Repub support then, but the GOP would not allow a bill to pass the with majority Dem support (Hastert rule idiocy). the Dems are whistling past the graveyard if they don't figure out what to do with their faction who do believe that open borders are a moral imperative. There may not even be that many but as long as the Dems can't control the narrative about it, it's a problem. it's a commendable moral stance, it's just not a politically viable stance. But for decades we've had this weird collusion between the pro immigration parts of the left and the business interests on the right who are happy to support anti-immigration political talk, as long as they know they can count on enough division among the Dems so that between that and their own duplicity, they can keep anything from actually happening. Finally the public frustration over inaction helped give us Trump and the business community is going to see their worst nightmare scenario come to past - either there is going to be a recession, or lower end wages in the US are going to rise.

  15. Skubal is one of the reasons I started watching the Tigers/baseball again. I love pitching, especially like this. Special. If I were a left handed batter I would tell coach to play the bat boy, he will have a better chance than me. I batted left handed and I can't imagine facing him. Unreal stuff.

  17. you do realize those two had hundreds of college PAs and were older (22) and McGonigle came in as a prep player? So you have a rather apples/oranges comparison. NCAA ball is about equivalent to low minors play. McGonigle will be 22 in '27. I've generally been referencing PA and BR has Jackson, a prep player, with 1017 PA in the minors. He has also totaled 0.6 WAR in 180 games, and he hasn't broken a 100 OPS+ yet. Not sure he's your best case for a fast call up.

  18. Not really. They're thinking of Decker's past history of injuries. First priority is a competent starting or starter-replacement tackle. That's not Skipper. He's the gimmick guy. Or the 3rd tackle for a "Heavy (3 OT's)" line... They'll get him back on the roster. After they put guys on IR...

  20. As far as Kilmar Abrego Garcia is concerned, they said he couldn't be brought back from CECOT. And then he was brought back anyway to (ostensibly) stand for criminal charges. (ie. They lied, as per yoosh) And when it apparently became evident they weren't going to be able to prosecute him on criminal charges, they pivoted to detaining him again and shipping him half way across the world. He's being treated this way for one reason and one reason only: because he embarrassed Dear Leader. There's no real defense to any of it IMO

  24. My league currently in a lightning delay. Of the 20 or so people that have early games, 8 of them are at a table at the outside bar, 11 are hanging out under palm trees to stay dry. I am alone at the inside bar browsing MTF.
