Specific to pitching, what rules in other sports prevent players designated as one position from playing another position? There are hybrid players in all sports. Centers are either becoming extinct in basketball or evolving into something different. Basketball in general is morphing into postionless arrangements. Offensive lineman in football are restricted to wearing certain numbers and have certain rules dictating when/where they can be, but I don't think there's a rule saying they couldn't flip over to defensive line. I don't know enough about hockey, but I know on penalty kills, wings & defence (shout out Canada) might not necessarily be two of each at a time on the ice. And then there is the pulling of the goalie for an extra attacker.

I feel like a good 2023 season won't be measured by wins and losses as much as it will be by laying the framework of actually identifying, acquiring, and developing talent, and then actually following through on it. I suppose some of the prework has been done, but it might be evident to fans just yet.

Is this a good rule? Can teams just list players as both position players and pitchers for each game? Who is going to pitch the CastroH innings for the 2023 Tigers?

I was dead set against the runner on 2nd to begin extra innings. I don't care much about it anymore. It won't occur in the playoffs, the bases are empty to open an inning. I'd say play the 10th inning as is. Put a runner on 1st in the 11th. Put a runner on 2nd in the 12th. Put a runner on 3rd in the 13th.

Injuries aside, are there many position player guarantees to the make the roster out of camp? There are lots of options, but guarantees? Haase, Baez, Cabrera, Greene, Meadows are probably 5 for sure. I'm not sure what options Maton and Vierling have. But considering they offer LHH IF and RHH OF capabilities, something that Harris specifically called as needs prior to their acquisition, they've probably got a foot in the door. I don't think Schoop is a lock. If he doesn't hit, they may just release him. Again, lots of in house IF options are available, and most are more defensively versatile than Schoop. Torkelson, sure, we'd all love it if he took the 1B job. I think he will. But last season just sticks in the back of the mind that, maybe, just maybe, there's more minor league to do. Baddoo and Carpenter, both have options left? How many nonfielding LHH OF can they have on the roster? Who will be the backup catcher? I don't think it is Rogers by default. Is it too tough to ask a catcher to miss a season and than assume one spring training gets him back to where he needs to be? Plus, it ain't like he mastered the major league level already. So, yeah, now we're into the names of guys that may or may not be a Tiger in Tampa on Opening Day. Doesn't seem like a whole lot of roster guarantees to me. And that's perfectly fine. Lots of options and lots of competition isn't a bad thing.

That’s good stuff. I like multi sport athletes, seems odd that sports reference pages won’t link one sports career page to the other. Scroll down on his baseball page and see that he pitched one game at age 16. 6 innings, a non start outing. How did that happen? It’s his only game pitched in his short pro career. Did it go into extra innings or something? It wasn’t a terrible outing by the results (3 H, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 HBP, 2 ER). There’s no box score linked. I guess we’re left to make up our own story. And playing pro ball at 16 years old? Was this due to Vietnam and minor league teams were signing whomever they could find? My understanding was that this was the case during WWI & WWII. Maybe it was the same in 1970? I don’t know.

Interesting. His SO/9 went from 11.0-12.0 for several seasons to 7.2 last season. Seems like a good reclamation project.
