Candelario has played in all 17 games, so combine that with his struggles, he had to sit at some point. I don't understand Garneau on the roster at this point. It's just a wasted spot at this point. They have a shallow bench and little to no maneuverability when it comes to platoons or resting guys.

I don't know how launch angle might relate to ISO & SLG. I was looking over team stats on bbref, and it seems like the glaring thing for the Tigers so far this season is the power just isn't there (which we've realized). But a lot of other hitting & pitching ratios see the Tigers are hovering around league average (which might be a bit of a surprise), sometimes a bit higher, sometimes a bit lower, but nothing egregious.

We watch the Tigers. By comparison, any hitter with multiple hits in the same game is hot.

I think that's overblown. 5 strikes out of 13 pitches is not effectively wild. Otherwise, we'd see that more often out of one inning relievers.

Looking at the replay again, you're right, there was no play to be made. There was nobody within the zip code of where the overthrow landed, so there was no way the Tigers were going to cut down that game winning run once it got past Candelario.

Yes, the Tigers got lucky to escape the bottom of the 8th and I guess it could be said the baseball gods weren't offering the same sort of luck in the bottom of the 9th.

Its down on the list of errors on that play, but it isn't helpful if there's a play at the plate on the 2nd runner. Then again, if there was a throw, it would've probably hit a goose in flight or something stupid like that.

I don't mind Fulmer being brought in to face Buxton & Correa in the 8th. I don't know if he was warming up when Baez hit his HR or not. It was still a close enough game before that where Hinch would try to keep things close going into the top of the 9th. A lot of players had a bad game last night. The result of the Haase throw is the most glaring, but as was mentioned above, it wasn't the only miscue. Here's one that wasn't brought up, why was Soto standing at the plate with his hands on his hips? If a throw gets to the plate in time, he's risking interfering with that play. If the runner takes a route on the foul side of the plate, and Soto is standing there observing, now you're putting a judgement call into the hands of the umpire when your team is on the road in the 9th inning in cold weather.

Come on, who doesn't want an over 5 BB/9 in high leverage situations? What could go wrong? And its not just small sample size. Its his resume in the majors and the minors.

Trever Miller on September 4, 1996. He relieved Todd Van Poppel with his own gasoline mixture and took the L against the Jerk Sox. Looks like he scratched out parts of 13 seasons in the bigs and should have a pretty decent collection of jerseys somewhere in his house.

3 Cs, extra Ps (because the pitching staff is in shambles and the BP is full of single inning only types), and a DH only. There's not much maneuverability around the diamond, and so there aren't options to sit a struggling bat an extra day or two (which, OK, all the bats are struggling, so I guess this is a bit of a silly point).

Am I reading the box score right that Fulmer threw only 5 strikes out of 13 pitches? And, if true, there is a "thought" to keeping him in the game? Haase's throwing error is glaring. 1 1/3 IP of only 9 strikes in 29 pitches is inexcusable. And let's be honest, outside of two shots off of Baez' bat, are the Tigers even pitching in the bottom of the 9th? Look, its easy to pinpoint one play, but it ain't like there isn't plenty of blame to throw around to numerous players for numerous reasons.

The 1984 Tigers employed the services of only 14 different pitchers for the entire season. I don’t remember for sure, I wasn’t old enough to pay attention to it, but my hunch is that a 10 man pitching staff was pretty standard then? Generally 4 man starting rotations with an occasional 5th SP from time to time. It helped the Tigers to have Morris/Petry/Wilcox at the top and about 280 IP out of the closing duo. Those 5 arms accounted for 65% of the total innings pitched. That’s crazy to think about. Just think about it.

I’m not sure I could make contact with a 60 MPH pitch, so I’d probably be too shocked and thrilled to worry about a little stinging in my hands (if they weren’t numb by then).
