LOCKOUT '22: When will we see baseball again?

That's kind of how I see it, too. I think negotiations get serious between the football conference championships and Super Bowl, sometime around there, and a deal is made shortly after the Super Bowl. There'll be a quick finish for a bunch of FAs, maybe a slight delay to spring training, but otherwise a normal regular season. That's my guess anyway.- 1,851 replies

Oh, I know. I'm still looking for it, but the market isn't there yet. Maybe tomorrow.

Does a DH have to be old, fat, slow, and boring? (Why do I feel like Lee is picking on me?) If I had my druthers on roster construction, I'd use the DH spot in the lineup to give every day players a half day off by keeping them off of the field on defense but keep their bat in the lineup. I'd try to stay away from signing a permanent DH.- 1,851 replies

Sure, I agree with you for the most part. I don't know where things go from here. Its not as easy as saying, well, those that are not vaccinated had their chance, so let's rip off the band aid and get back to normal. There are still poor effects happening to those that are vaccinated (indirectly for the most part) and those that are not eligible to be vaccinated.

I just kind of thought of this, and I don't know if I'll be able to express it properly or not. But, you think about today and how baseball is widely available on TV and radio (although radio availability has traditionally been more widespread). So, in the past, a baseball game was more of a treat to go to or to watch than these days. In the past, someone might be more willing to devote a 3 hour chunk of time to watch a game than today because baseball games weren't as available. This is probably something that has been mentioned here before, but I don't recall it. Anyway, the scarcity of football games (weekly vs daily) can kind of have this variable attached to it as well. Following a favorite team means 12 -14 games in college or 17-20 games in the NFL. Meanwhile, if you want to follow an MLB team, there are 162 games a year. If I watch a game and its moving at a snail's pace, and I need to do something else (say mow the lawn), I might decide bail on that game and tune in the next day. Now, I think we can all understand that there's a lot of dead time in a football game. What have studies said, the ball is only in play for like 12 minutes of a 60 minute game clock? But I'm going to stay with the football game because there are limited opportunities during the season. Plus, I've got halftime to move away from the TV for a break, whereas baseball doesn't have that. I don't know if I've typed that out well enough or not. And its not the reason for baseball having an unfavorable reputation vs football despite having a similarity between the two, but I think its part of the equation.- 1,851 replies

I know you are not giving some leaders a pass. But there have been some missed opportunities to minimize the impact along the way.

I was close. And I think I prefer spelling out defeated former president. Don’t acronymize it. Spell it out, give that title its proper due.

Regarding the DH, I wonder what split is between (1j for DH, (2) against DH, or (3) just pick one and make it consistent across both AL & NL. I suspect (3) is the leader.- 1,851 replies
