  1. I've been wading thru a book written by James Michener about how close we came to a Constitutional Crisis in 1968. There was fear that Wallace would garner enough EC votes to throw the election to the House. Each party feared the other party would make a deal with the Wallace electors to gain enough votes to win the election. He was a elector in 1968, no qualifications, just a party hack as he put it. There was a big snowstorm in Eastern Pennsylvania the day the electors were to meet to cast votes. They were pulling guys off the street in order to cast the vote.
  2. I'm actually trying to remember when my vote for president actually mattered. Virginia was solid red from 1972-1988. Illinois 1992-2000, it was always given a Democrat would win. I guess my time in Michigan gave some intrigue to the national elections 2004,2016 This may not hold for local and state elections. The whole EC thing failed when they started allowing commoners to. vote while keeping the veneer of "smart electors" deciding the executive position. One man, one vote has been a farce for 200 plus years
  3. Oasis definition something that provides refuge, relief, or pleasant contrast
  4. Don’t forget women didn’t count at all and only white guys who owned land were able to vote. In other words the fabled founding fathers were in effect oligarchs.
  5. Sorry, Had to rub it in a bit. After watching three weekends of snowmageddon only to see about three inches of the stuff that was easily taken care of by solar snow removal. (The mess a few weeks ago doesn't count, we were too far south and in a bit of a snow/rain hole. I blame the I-95 fiasco on idiot truck drivers who always tend to drive to fast through that corridor. Hang in there, stay safe..
  6. I spent a couple years loading cabs/sedans at DTW. Some of the hardest working and nicest guys once you get to know them. The only incident I ever had with them regarding their religion was the one time I told a couple of them that when it came to control over driver activities during my shift I was god (little g). One went a bit ballistic (there is no God but God). Thinking back I'd probably get the same reaction from a Baptist.
  7. Sounds like a Trump rally to me. Let's deportbthem
  8. Part of my wife's job when we moved to Detroit was the Tiger's broadcast (also Red Wings and Lions). Essentially she was Ernie's last boss. When she had her first meeting with Phil Garner and his wife. She told him I grew up as a Pirate fan, our son was born the Summer after the 1979 World Series. He's our only child. The Pirates haven't been back since. Phil was a bit embarrassed, his wife was quite amused.
  9. But we can't afford the apartment we had in the late 90's. 48th floor catty corner from Holy Name, Lake view (now gone due to new construction). Shortly before we left I found that Paul Konerko lived there right after he was traded to the Sox. A doorman told me a couple other ball players lived there briefly during the season.
  10. I do subscribe to Apple. Most of it is on my phone. I usually stick it on shuffle. Pandora is usually there for my beach music fix. Band of Oz Radio suits my needs.
  11. Eisenhower also wanted to appoint a Catholic to the bench. He reportedly told his Attorney General "I still want to find some fine, prominent Catholic to nominate to the bench" according to historians. William Brennan Jr even confirmed the story in an interview with Irish America magazine after his appointment.
  12. When we lived there 20 plus years ago I found it very walkable. Except for the part of walking between Union Station and the State of Illinois Building. Of course once I hit the Loop, it was deserted after 5 PM. We lived downtown for a couple of years (State and Superior). I had the reverse commute. My wife worked in Streeterville (the old CBS building is no longer, newer parking garage). She could walk to work. We tolerated the North Michigan Ave tourist crowd and busses. Good restaurants in any direction.
  13. I haven't listened to music radio in about 25 years. Don't listen to Spotify, occasionally Pandora. I'm a Boomer
  14. What was the term around the turn of the century? Jobs Americans don't want to do?
  15. For those of us who ever spent time in the business BOOGER!!
  16. That dagnab voting machine looked at me the wrong way
  17. At the very least it would help solve the "worker shortage" MAGAs keep complaining about. Temporarily
  18. He's saying the quiet part out loud. Some people don't like transparency from their leaders
  19. Biden was asked about it on the campaign trail. He gave an honest answer.
  20. Probably not unless you looked between the lines. They both seemed reasonable at first glance.
  21. I'm old enough to remember back in my radio days in the mid 70s to hire an African American to fill an announcer position I had. The major stipulation was that he couldn't "sound black". Fortunately there was a guy looking for work who fit the bill. I went to high school with him and he was the whitest sounding person I knew. Good guy, went on to be a college president at a HBSU briefly. About that time stations were also scrambling to find a female announcer. Our sales staff kept bringing me applicants they found in the local bars. The one I hired and trained was later "promoted" to the "home office"
