2023 Detroit Tigers Regular Season Discussion Thread
1984Echoes replied to oblong's topic in Detroit Tigers
All MLB games should look like this (IMO)... no matter the broadcaster... -
Well, if any coach could get some compete out of him, hopefully that would be a player's coach like DC... or rather, just, DC.
-
McGonigle and Paul Wilson are the two key remaining guys to sign on the dotted line...

That's called "too late to the table" and yes, that's part of why he did get canned. IIRC, Avila did move pitifully slow in bringing in guys/ scouts that actually understood the word "analytics", and what to do with them, which says: he didn't know who they were/ he was in over his head/ he didn't have the contacts/ draw power to bring in those guys. Or, all of the above. But, starting in 2018 (pre-draft-hitters "era"); I started to really like his drafts. (Faedo & Vest are still here from 2017 but that's not much...): 2018: Mize, Skubal, Parker Meadows (at AAA and still has a chance) and guys still hanging on or were part of a trade: Kody Clemens (made it to MLB-Philly this year with a .644 OPS), Garrett Hill, plus some relievers still kicking around that probably amount to nothing but, still in the Org so they... "have a chance"? 2019: Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Beau Brieske, plus a lot of fringy guys like Kreidler, Lipcius, Brendan White, Navigato. 2020 (5 round draft): Torkelson, Dingler (did ok at Erie so there's still hope), Colt Keith (on the verge), and still might have a chance: Trei Cruz, Wilmer Flores (signed as an undrafted FA pitcher after the draft)... versus guys who are struggling to make progress (but still too early to consign to a dustbin): Daniel Cabrera, Gage Workman... The newer drafts are too recent to know whether we get decent players out of there or not. But there are a lot of promising candidates... Overall... the correct assessment on Avila seems to be: too little, too late, and too lazy.

We might get that next year. Or at least I'm hoping for that... It's another year past Jake's TJ and... after at least one full year of proven health (knock on wood...). Plus one more thing: I think there will be higher competition for AB's next year, squeezing Haase out, to only Catcher and maybe some PH'ing... which I would be OK with if it eliminates his position starts other than at C... -

I wouldn't see anything wrong with that either. But going back to his high hit tool as he's shown in at least college and the minors... I'm still holding out for something very, very... Lofty. Even if I have to patiently wait for it... -

PS: The reason I made my earlier comment last night: I also am annoyed with all the Tork-bashing. That comment was more aligned with: "Can we stop bashing him now?" then with "I might finally believe he belongs". That probably didn't come through, but that's what I meant. The reason I do NOT feel the need to bash him, even if he hasn't met my expectations: Is that I have patience. I know he's going through his learning curve. And I might even sound impatient or frustrated at times... because I believe he can (and will) do better. But I still believe he'll hit my higher expectations, even if he has to go through these growing pains. Still pleased he was our draftee. And just patiently waiting to see just how high he can get to before I need to reset any expectations that I might have... -

Wait... So which is it? As for myself, the scouting reports said he had an extremely high hit tool. And he proved that out in the minors. My expectations were multiple years hovering around .320 (even if his career was closer to .300-.310-ish), 30-40 homers with maybe a highpoint of 50+ somewhere, career 500-ish HR's, and high point years of .900-ish + OPS, even if career ended up closer to .850-ish. My expectations have not changed. -

So.... Was this Torque's "coming out party"? Is he now a "bona fide" baseball player? -
In prior years' a 35th round pick or so...

They've kidnapped Americans before, from the DMZ. Or hacked them to death. My first thought was that they kidnapped him. But then again... maybe not. He sounds squirrelly...

Throw the book at those Benedict Arnold Traitors to the Constitution of the United States. IMO.

If we trade for "MLB ready" prospects I would consider that as both a "buy" and a "sell"; which I want Harris to do. It might mean a 1-for-1 trade rather than trading 1 guy for 3 lottery tickets... I'm OK with that. But I still think the team has to sell at the deadline, no matter what. But... again, getting an "MLB ready" type prospect, to me, is as good as being a "buyer" at the deadline. It might mean packaging a couple players because they fit a contenders' needs... I have no problems adding a "throw-in player" or two because we have a lot of them. And I'm not saying it gets us a #1 prospect... just that it might move the needle from a top 8-10 prospect in an Org to a top 5 prospect... Or even if it doesn't do that, maybe a throw-in or two "clinches" a deal versus that deal veering off to another team. Our "key" tradeables IMO are Eduardo, Lorenzen, and Baez (even if he is basically untradeable...), but I'll get to them in a moment... Vierling and Olson and Foley I would like to hold onto... outside of that... I view as expendable "throw-ins", ANY 1 or 2 of: Cisnero, Lange, Shreve, White, Wentz, Faedo, Haase, Sands, Ibanez, Short, McKinstry, Maton or Baddoo. Most other guys in Toledo aside from Parker, Keith and Malloy, as well. Not saying any of them are prime targets or anything... just throw-ins if that's what a team wants... On Baez: most likely untradeable.. but if Harris could swing a crazy deal... kudos. But not holding my breath. On Lorenzen: I think he and Cisnero are at the highest level of tradeable and selling high. Please have no other consideration except MUST trade them! On Eduardo: I still think the team could look at him as a piece for the future. He could stabilize a still-near-rookie rotation next year. I still think they'll try to buy out his opt-out. Just my opinion. And I still think they SHOULD trade him if he doesn't agree to remove the opt-out (at whatever price)... but based on the above... I'm not 100% certain they will. Just my 2 cents...

That was the 4th guy I liked the most out of all the Tigers draftees this year. Clark, McGonigle, Paul Wilson and Diaz my favorites.
-
Well... It looks like he can play 3rd Base to me...

Or the Tigers try to buy out his option... -
If we're going to accumulate some high-end goal scorers on the Wings... I like Nylander better than DeBrincat (size/ toughness/ playoffs). And I like Jason Robertson more than Nylander (size/ toughness/ playoffs). How do we get JR...? We're going to stick 'em up with our hockey sticks: "Dallas, this is Detroit. This is a stick up! We want Jason Robertson. Hand him over!!! And we'll even send you a couple future 1sts so you don't feel so bad... Sorry...but C'ya later! C'mon JR... this way north to Hockeytown!"

More Putinesque Propaganda Lying Bull****. Zelensky is 5' 7" or 67" tall, or the same height that I am... That picture is a flat out ****ing lie. Oh, BTW... Putin is 5' 6" or 66" tall.

I'll take Riley Greene any day of the week and 3 times on Sunday...
-
If he can't catch stick him at 1B. (Cerkownyk... pronounced: Chur-cove-nik).

Professor McGonigle taught Harry Potter everything he knows.

5. Langford is limited defensively. Clark looks like he could turn into an outstanding Centerfielder. Between that, and his much higher Hit tool, those were two things that the media and fanbase were not considering. If everything went aces for these two players, I would guess Langford ends up with more career HR's but Clark ends up with a much higher career WAR based on his superior defense, speed (SB's and SB%), OBP (both BA and walks...), and while less HR's than Langford... more doubles and triples (gap power). Something to think about... But I'm just guessing...

That was my point. There was some worry about the salary cap and having both Max Clark and Riley Greene. How can that be any kind of worry when their timelines are so far apart? I don't see an issue. Which was my point... same thing you're saying...
