If you want to change the conversation fine. But we were SPECIFICALLY talking about, and my response that you specifically quoted... Was about what fault lies in signing or not signing Correa. If you want to contribute to that conversation, fine. If you want to start a separate conversation, fine. But I'm not going to argue with you over your GENERAL dissatisfaction when you quoted my SPECIFIC statement that it is ILITCH's fault for not signing Correa, NOT Avila's.

This is a DIFFERENT conversation. The conversation at hand is whether it is AVILA's fault or not, for signing Baez instead of Correa. Are you able to stay on point, or not?

Where I would disagree with this, is: Spencer Turnbull - 2014 #63 pick (2nd round). Tarik Skubal - 2018, 9th round. Greg Soto - International signing. Wilmer Flores - 2020, undrafted FA signing. Tyler Alexander - 2015, 2nd round. Will Vest, 2017, 12th round. Joe Jimenez - International sign. Beau Brieske - 2019, 27th round. Jason Foley - 2016, undrafted FA. Jake Rogers - trade. Dillon Dingler - 2020, 2nd round. Kody Clemens - 2018, 3rd round. Ryan Kreidler - 2019, 4th round. Roberto Campos - 2019 International signing. Christian Santana - 2021 International signing. Colten Keith - 2020, 5th round. Daniel Cabrera - 2020, 2nd round. Gage Workman - 2020, 4th round.

One other point for everyone whining about Avila signing Baez instead of Correa: This is not an AVILA problem. Your criticism of Avila is NOT correct because it is not an Avila problem but an... ILITCH problem. ILITCH didn't want to go to 10 years/ $350MM. ILITCH put a cap on what kind of contract/ team's annual salary he would allow. ILITCH agreed to the Baez contract, but NOT a Correa contract exceeding what Avila offered (under ILITCH's direction/ approval). The criticism of Avila is completely and totally UNWARRANTED. IMO.

And I think Avila IS the person to build a winner. So... there's that.

This team needs to be "on the cusp" before they spend more. And they're just not quite "there" yet.

In other words: Avila read the market correctly. IE: He and Ilitch did NOT want to have a $35/36MM AAV contract on the books, and certainly not a 10-freaking-year $36MM AAV contract on the books. Ergo: Baez. And all the warts that he comes with.

There's no guarantee that Correa gets stuck waiting the market because no one else wanted to give him his $300+MM. 20/20 hindsight. He could have as easily gotten his $300MM+, Baez sign elsewhere, and we sign Iglesias. And then everyone on here would be whining about how Al "didn't read the market" and got stuck with Iglesias instead of bagging Correa or at least Baez. This criticism is complete and total horseshit.

No, that's NOT fair. That's 20/20 hindsight... which is a BS (unfair) way to evaluate a decision.

You guys don't remember why DD was axed? He openly/ publicly flirted with the Boston Red Sox over their open GM job. Ilitch fired DD BEFORE the Price/ Soria/ Cespedes trades (everyone wondered why he was handling deadline trades when Ilitch had already demanded his resignation). Mike was PISSED with DD's disloyalty to the Tigers... that he had the audacity to publicly flirt with the Red Sox while still Detroit's GM. I think he was given "two weeks notice", which covered the trade deadline, or something along those lines. He was officially released by the Tigers on August 4th, 2015. He was hired by the Boston Red Sox to be their new GM on August 18th, 2015.

It's never a good time to panic. When you're under duress, and in a panic, you fuck up. IIRC, I had this EXACT same conversation last year on this board (err, the old board) when the team started out of the gate and fell flat on its face. The exact same panic comments: "Fire Avila!", "Fire Hinch", "FIRE THEM ALL!!!", "Avila sucks, he's the worst, get rid of him!!!", "This year is WORSE than 2004!!!", etc., etc., etc... The EXACT same stream of comments. I stated unequivocally last year to DON'T panic, it will get better. And I am saying the same right now. Don't panic. The team sucks. We're under duress... so lets lash out and burn everything to the ground... Not. Players will get back from injuries. Hinch delivered his tongue lashing and I predict that starting tomorrow (or maybe later, we'll see with this team...) the team starts playing/ hitting better. All the angst over drafting RHP's, while historically correct, does not guarantee future repeat results. Greene and Tork will play much, much better. If not this year, then next. Baez will play much, much better, if not this year, then next. Not to be the steady, reliable emotional touchstone here but (and Lee is correct, I'm not exactly the best guy to do that...), for right now, as much as everyone will absolutely hate this: I believe it's best to stay the course and ride this shit storm out. The sun always comes back out to shine, even after a Cat 5 hurricane.

My stance on this team hasn't changed. Rough times. But difficult times are not a good reason to make panic moves. And IMO, everyone in here is now in Panic Mode.

So... They were "casing the joint"? I could never have imagined that...
-
He was a productive pass catcher with the Panthers... Stick him at H-Back, out wide, etc... could still be a weapon IMO...

I would be on board with that. It's why I was thinking about it since Friday. Stop (or at least attempt to stop) inflation in its tracks. It might cause us a mild recession though... Housing/ mortgages will get hammered. Spending will drop, at least in the short term. Causing backwash all along the supply chain... Just need to fix this refinery/ oil/ gas price issue as the final piece IMO.
-
I was thinking this... A full point to... make a point?
-
Hmmm... That one sounds familiar...

FTFY.

1 and 4 aren't showing. Otherwise, I see George Brett at #2 with a .550 OPS through 81 games and Alan Trammel at #6 with a .613 OPS, if you were looking for noteworthy names that might mean something to us.... Ah, the blurred guys... so 1 and 4 are Connie Mack and/ or John McGraw and/ or similar...

They are. Hillary was correct.

Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?

I don't think we really know that until after this season. I mean LB'ers is an obvious area of need... But everywhere else is a grey area until we learn more this season... -
Lions Draft Grades and After Draft Talk/What's Next?
1984Echoes replied to AlaskanTigersFan's topic in Detroit Lions
If a team is in position to draft Stroud or Young but already has their franchise QB (let's call them the "Jacksonville Jaguars" for arguments sake...), then they will want to trade down for whatever king's ransom they can get. If Holmes decides he absolutely has to have one of those guys... he'll have two 1st rounders in 2023, and he can add in a 2024 1st, and additional 2nds & 3rds as needed. I mean, the less he pays the better... but I see no reason why he can't/ doesn't have enough "ammunition" to move up if he wants to. So I am less worried about the cost/ ability to move up and go get a guy we want... and more invested in Holmes etal just making the correct decision. I mean I have confidence there too... I just want to see it happen for the team... And by "it", I mean go all the way to the top.
