Sure, and in a salary cap world or if I thought Illitch would deploy $60mm elswhere, there are probably more valuable ways to spend what Skubal would cost. My concern is that Illitch would just keep the money in his pocket if he doesn't pay Skubal. Might be good for Illitch, sucks for me as a fan though.

If I were Illitch, I'd aim to position the Tigers for sale for the year 2030. Maximize attendance, TV ratings, and merch until then. Signing Skubal and winning a championship or two would drive that. A new owner in 2030 won't be scared off by the remaining few years of Skubal's contract, will just see it as a cost of entry for acquiring the team.

Great, actually. No one can take away the joy and excitement of 4 Cup triumphs over a 12-year span. Give me 2 World Series and 2 Super Bowls over the next decade. That will take me to 68 years old. Both the Tigers and Lions can suck for the rest of my lifetime after that. Would make that deal in a heartbeat.

I’m in Victoria, BC now and while my wife and I were having afternoon tea at the Empress I stopped in at a pub a few blocks away. Bartender had the game on and was wearing a Tigers cap with the orange English D. I asked him if he was a Tigers fan or just liked the hat. He replied adamantly that he is a Tigers fan, originally from Windsor. We agreed that the Tigers really need the win tonight but fortunately in Skubal we both trust. A shared moment thousands of miles away from Comerica.
