Ray King comes into pitch for Milwaukee in the bottom of the 8th.
Bobby Higginson hits a ground ball dribbler down the first baseline. King picks it up and doesn't just tag Higginson but swipes at him hard and Higginson took exception (as he should have). The two benches clear, but not a whole lot is going on, just a gathering of puffed out chests, basically. A fan jumps out of the LF stands (bullpen was still in right back then). and starts running towards the gathering by first base, he gets to the edge of the dirt between SS and 3B when the ball boy in the left field corner bolts from his chair and tackles this dude by the mound. It was incredible and the crowd and players from both teams were cheering him. I think the kid's name was Jeremy Jackson (there was a brief newspaper write-up the next day), he was a high school football player, but man did he close on that guy.
What was that guy gonna do when he got to the players? Get in the fight? Did he think the Tigers players would back him up or something?
I think after he hit the ball Higginson said "you mother f***er" and King thought was was talking about him when Higginson was saying it to himself. He was from Philly after all, that's practically a Christmas greeting there.
