Week Fourteen: Detroit Lions (9-3) @ Chicago Bears (4-8)
Hongbit replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
It’s a little frustrating that MCDC continually talks about the defense not being a concern and just needing to clean up mental mistakes and first Bears drive includes multiple plays where they lost contain and didn’t set the edge. -

Make room, everyone’s jumping back on board. Lions 41 Bears 23 Not even that close as Lions have a 41-10 lead in the 4th. Defense forces 4 turnovers and the OL does their job in front of Goff and he lights up the Bears. -

The Big Buck? His nickname was Cocaine Wayne. No way the bindle the cops found in his car was his son’s. I still can’t believe he got away with that.

Can’t say that I saw this coming. Assume they will be bringing in either Cam Ward, Riley Leonard, or Will Howard from the portal.

Ragnow needs to be ok. -
Hats off. It was hard to do but they got it the right. The 4 best teams are in.
-
None of these teams are dominant. Everyone has had multiple close calls against lesser teams. Half of Washington’s wins have been by a TD or less.

The saving grace for the committee is this is the last year of this system. There are no precedents to be set. Everything next year will be brand new.

It’s going to be offensive to someone either way. Leaving out an undefeated ACC champ, leaving out the SEC champ, leaving out the 2 time defending champ that is 29-1 in their last 30, leaving out the B12 champ with a victory over the SEC champ. Everyone is deserving that’s what makes it so hard. As for Iowa, It’s no wonder the defense looks good. After the big 3, this is as bad as the rest of the conference has been in years. It’s insane at how bare the talent is this year on the offensive side in the B1G. There are no offensive players of significance and no draftable QBs outside of UM, OSU, PSU. That never happens.

Nothing you said is wrong. That’s why the decision is so tough. The challenge is that if they put in FSU, they haven’t put the best 4 teams into the playoff. That’s a hard choice because FSU has earned their spot. It’s similar to what we used to get into with undefeated G5 teams and how they would get left out despite going undefeated and having done everything they could’ve on the field. In this case, there’s no way that today’s version of FSU without Jordan Travis would even be in contention for the playoff. It’s essentially a walkover game right into the final for the top seed. They risk tainting the entire playoff and giving the #1 team a very big advantage by having to play a team without star QB (and most likely Heisman winner too). Don’t they have to take some of that into consideration?

Will they take the 4 most deserving or will they take the 4 best teams? We will find out tomorrow at 12. Personally, I’m in the corner of taking the 4 best. UM, UW, Texas, Bama. Cases can be made for both sides but it will be a huge benefit for Michigan if they take the deserving FSU instead of the better Alabama, Georgia, or Texas.

One team in. Washington locks in at least the 3 seed.

Who the hell is Curt Cignetti? I like it.

Campbell Is right about turnovers. That’s the difference. The offensive side is easily solved by the leagues most up and down OL doing their jobs consistently. Goff with time doesn’t make mistakes. Goff under constant pressure is a train wreck. That is all dependent on this line stepping up and playing to the level they are accustomed. This team may not win another game if the OL can’t figure it out. At the same time, they may win them all if the guys up front can get the dominance back. On defense, they can’t sit around and wait for the other team to make a mistake. They have to put them under pressure and force the issue. They need to do a much better job of making the opposing offense uncomfortable and forcing them to work faster. -
He’s got a buyout but it expires on December 15th. That’s an odd time with transfer portal opening December 4th and Early Signing Day on December 20th. Makes it easier to keep him. Not sure how much the athletic department budget deficit plays a role. Any buyout money along with the contract for the next coach would come direct from their big donors and not from the same pool of general department money.

Big surprise here. His record in conference is 26-26 but only 3-19 against teams with a winning record. Never won a bowl game or had a top 25 recruiting class. His salary is almost $6M making him the highest paid public employee in the state of California.

It’s not going to be easy week 15 for the Lions. May even get flexed. MCDC vs. his mentor Sean Payton has a great storyline.

Saints WR Olave and Shaheed both left today’s game with injuries and didn’t return. -
Going to be interesting to see what happens if both Oregon and Florida St. win next week. Do they select an undefeated FSU with zero wins over teams ranked in the top 12 and playing without their star Qb or do they take 1 loss Oregon coming off a victory over previously 3rd rated UW and have steamrolled everyone on the scheudle recently.
