To me when it comes down to compensation there needs to be a balance to get a deal for baseball next year. There is going to need to be some sort of cap situation. The way i see forward is for the non stars their salaries need to be higher and grow faster per year and reach Free Agency sooner. For the stars the salaries need to not be able to balloon up and take up a 3rd of the the budget by themselves. Right now there’s a large gap of potential salary range and it needs to be pushed together more.

It’s not about Skubal. It’s about every other pitcher after him entering arbitration. If players are going to be that expensive it essentially means small market teams have to try and sign and buy out years earlier or trade them sooner.

I think it moves either Melton or Anderson to the bullpen. There are always injuries or chances for starts. We thought we were in a great spot at the start of last year and still ran out of starting pitching.

I think the fan base and frankly the organization for some reason aren’t really behind Mize. I chalk it up to being a 1st pick and underperforming expectations as well as injuries. Tork I think gets under appreciated as well for that same 1st pick reason. Me personally I think Mize is a good 2/3 type pitcher who a good team should win the majority of his starts he just isn’t going to dominate another team very often.

Criticizing is fine and I think for this year there is a couple valid things that I would. 1) Counting on Glasgow and rookies on the line 2) Relying on Davenport to be healthy and productive 3) This may be just my opinion but I didn’t like the RB usage this year. Monty didn’t get used well and Gibbs got overused. 4) Overaggressive approach offensively the second half of the year. Gimmick plays when not needed and 4th down calls 5) Defense being stubbornly stuck to high usage of man to man even when injuries caught up. Things that I don’t think are fair criticism is for injuries and not trading for players. I am of the opinion that you basically never trade middle of the season on the NFL unless you need only 1 player. That was not the Lions this year.

Here's my problems with Defensive Pass Interference and other penalties that go back to my coaching days. 1) The defense as every right to the ball as an offensive player yet rarely is it called that way. Yet we celebrate when a WR turns into a defensive player to break up an interception 2) Offensive players should not be rewarded for a bad pass or bad route. If the defensive player gets hit by the under thrown ball and made contact with the WR beforehand because it was under thrown/they overran it then to bad you lost position for that ball. Looking back for the ball should have no impact on if it is defensive pass interference or not. 3) Get rid of the no contact after 5 yards rule if you aren't going to call it both ways. Offensive players have to much leeway to make contact when the defense can't 4) Stop with all the automatic first down calls if its not a personal foul. Why is every penalty against a wide receiver a first down. If you insist on doing that then the offense should have equivalent penalties on their side. Example: OPI= loss of down and yardage like intentional grounding.

Players would never agree to a salary cap/bigger soft cap penalties without a floor. I would assume that years under control would also have to be negotiated for players to get to free agency faster. Likely larger rosters to allow for more players to make the majors and get into the union faster. IMO this is going to be a nasty fight and I wouldn't be surprised if we lost an entire season.

Nice thing for the Lions is they are probably the best of those open spots. Best mix of established weapons with little to no drama and a stable coaching situation. Should have their pick of the litter which is a nice change.

The NFL Coaching Carousel pre-2026 edition

Right!!!!??? I could go get fired and collect a buyout. -
Highest pitcher arb ever was Price at 19.75. I don’t think the a tigers are wrong here. It’ll get worked out.

Talk about overthinking it from the Ravens perspective, this was stupid. Michigan needed away from anything Harbaugh for awhile so I’m not upset about that. They look to have found an adult to take over. Harbaugh if he wants it will likely be the first choice on almost every NFL opening and I wouldn’t be all that surprised if a playoff team moved on from a coach that they weren’t planning on to go and get him.

Schedule for next year.... that looks doable for a turnaround. Home games: Chicago, Green Bay, Minnesota, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, New England, New York Jets, Tennessee, New York Giants Road games: Chicago, Green Bay, Minnesota, Atlanta, Buffalo, Carolina, Miami, Arizona

Week Eighteen: Detroit Lions (8-8) @ Chicago Bears (11-5)

I don't disagree it was a bad year in division but if we only win one more game in division or out of division we are in the playoffs. Do you think back on the season and think we probably gave a couple games away? If even 50% healthier at the Oline/TE position we are probably playing next week. I really just don't see doom and gloom for this roster yet. -

I do think Campbell will go thru the offseason rethinking his strategy going forward. Its not the aggressiveness on 4th down decisions when we could've kicked a field goal as imo that wont change. But, Its some of the clock decisions that a head coach who wasn't distracted by play calling changes and frankly some of the way to cute of play calls they used for no reason sometimes. I would be surprised if they weren't successful next year assuming they stay healthy. -

I mean yay!....... but also, that sucks (draft position). If we are going to miss the playoffs I like another year of a winning record and also getting a 4th place schedule for next year though. -
Week Seventeen: Detroit Lions (8-7) @ Minnesota Vikings (7-8)

Offensively I think this year has just been bad luck. Defensively I strongly feel that our scheme allows for more injuries specifically in the back 7. We are one of the highest man to man teams so we are always chasing and tired. This to me leads to bad tackling form and playing out of control which leads to more injuries. We need to mix in more zone or at the very least rotate earlier in the year more often to save snaps for later on. -

Linebacker could be a big need if Anzalone isn’t back, which I don’t think he will be. -

This team/organization is nowhere close to done. Their schedule was brutal this year and injuries piled up in specific positions. You add that to being to inexperienced along the line and it doomed their season. I have no doubt that they could run it back healthy next year and probably win the division. I do think Holmes will make the needed roster changes even if we don’t always agree with him and Campbell will make changes to his staff. -
Either way is fine. I just think you’re more likely to find a good rotational DE in the 2nd then a day one starter at left tackle.
-
Honestly linebacker isn’t a stretch to be the pick. Anzalone is probably not back and we could use a a replacement. Someone like Reese(doubtful) or Styles could easily be the selection. With that said I like OT there and look for a DE in then second.
-
Sounds about right to me. They are a very good team with elite players. Just hurt all around at key positions and are below average at oline.
-
If Ragnow comes back he will be the starter and Tate will stay at RG. No better place to learn then right next to him. That would allow you to have Mahogany and Frazier battle it out for LG and work at the other spot to take over in 27. OT is pretty good in this draft and I would not have a problem with them taking Decker's replacement this year. I could also see LB and DE in the first as there are some fantastic LB options in this draft and they tend to drop.

Week Sixteen: Pittsburgh Steelers (8-6) @ Detroit Lions (8-6)
Nate7474 replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
It takes 3 drives resulting in a FG to beat one drive resulting in a TD. You are only going to get inside the 5 so many times. Secondly there are so many ways for an offense to get another set of downs due to penalty. Lastly the worst case most of the time is turning it over on downs and forcing terrible field position. -

I am almost always OK with going for it inside the 5 regardless of the results. -
I don’t know what their plan is at center but if I can take early season quotes into perspective they don’t like rookie centers. That to me screams either Ratledge moving over or a FA OC. I like a middle of Mahogany Ratledge Frazier, it doesn’t sound awful to me but we need some vet depth to help out and it might not be next season but more for 2028 season. I think if we draft an OL in the 1st it’ll be a tackle to learn for a year behind decker. As things stand today I could see us going OT, LB, Edge in the first round. Next importance after that to me OC, Saftey, Nickle/CB. A good TE prospect could entice me as well later in the draft.
