Pitchers get hurt and don’t always regain their stuff. I think a 5 year deal is extremely risky. We just got out from under Miggy’s contract—do we want another with more considerable risk? If the going price is 6 or more years for a pitcher, I prefer we pass and try and grow our own.

The Cardinals had been very public about wanting to sign two free agent pitchers, which probably excited their fan base. Then they signed Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson. I really hope the rumors that we were in on Lynn were completely unfounded, otherwise I’m going to be very scared this offseason.

Most of them paid over $200 a ticket, plus all of the ancillary expenses, expecting to see an easy W. Not the first time fans of any team have been fickle. SOL causes a lot of PTSD.

I think it’s in a player’s wiring. I appreciate the hustle and commitment, but I’d rather take the occasional ball being safe than losing a crucial player for an extended period of time due to an injury.

I would be shocked to see Turnbull DFA’d, unless they view him to be damaged. He’s the type of pitcher Harris would target in free agency—relatively low salary, one-year commitment with upside.

Do they stay the A’s or embrace a new regional name?

Agree that only Flores and Dingler are spared. They might like Peña and Campos, too, but seems like low risk of a team wanting to carry them on their major league roster.

I didn’t say that. I believe our front office will not get into a big bidding war for the top free agent pitchers. But strictly a guess, of course.

The Cardinals have said they want two starters. The Yankees and Dodgers both need them and have the deep pockets and prestige. The teams that will lose starters in free agency will need to backfill those holes. Some of this will happen via trades and farm system, but there will likely be a lot of teams shopping. I’d love to get an elite or even very good SP, but I will be very shocked if it happens.

If somebody went through this thread and took a drink every time you shared your enthusiasm for a Yamamoto and Hader signing, they would have been drunk 100 posts ago. I appreciate your diligence, but I don’t think they are the type of pitchers that Harris would be willing to outbid every one else for. I think he likes to shop in the clearance aisle for an affordable project with upside. Basically, a Spencer Turnbull, if we didn’t already have him.
