i dont know man, i read this site and i think people think goff is the best qb in the league and better than a healthy lamar. but like you said, the risk of multiple #1s and $50 million a year GUARANTEED is waaaaay too risky. do people want to give goff $45 million a year? because that's what an extension will cost. which is why i think the plan always was to draft a qb this year and let him sit for a year or two behind goff. then you have three years of below market cost for a qb left. but i could be wrong, holmes seems to like goff a lot.
-
if they traded for lamar they likely wouldnt have 18...
-
i think its much more likely that brad holmes drafts a qb at 6 than he trades two #1s for lamar jackson. and i dont think its that likely he takes a qb at 6 (because richardson will be off the board).
-
ben johnson. goff was complete shit in the pocket last year. how many times did we see goff turn his back to the rush last year and run backwards? this year? maybe he's "more comfortable in the offense"? whatever narrative people want to throw out there, but to me its ben johnson. thats my narrative. 🙂

i would expect lamar to be more productive under johnson than he has been lately. i do not want the lions to trade for lamar. i do not want the lions to sign lamar. i havent seen anyone here advocate for that, but i could have missed it. but lamar has more upside as a player than jared goff.
-
how do you know you can get more wins with goff than jackson? we dont. you've seen what ben johnson did with goff, what could he do with lamar? i dont know. and again, i dont want to trade for lamar jackson, but the idea that goff played 8 great games last year means we never need to think about upgrading the qb position is short sighted, imo. lamar is too expensive and too much of a health risk for this team to do that.
-
goff's best year is not close to lamar's best year. goff's best year is about the same as lamar's follow up year. i dont think you would disagree with that. jared goff was not a good qb his last year in LA and his first year with detroit. lamar jackson was not a good qb this year and hasnt come close to the heights of 2019 since then. ben johnson revived jared goff's career, what could he do with lamar jackson's?
-
the lions defense was much better when he was healthy. he set up hutchinson a lot. was really good on stunts.
-
lamar jackson's 2019 was the fourth highest qbr season since 2006 (qbr stats only go back to 2006) and the third highest season in Approximate Value of all time. he was a transformational, generational talent at quarterback. again, the issue is he has never repeated it. can he do it? if he can, then giving up two first round picks for him is a no-brainer.
-
it doesnt "just add a few extra first downs," it opens up an entirely new dimension to the offense because the defense now has to account for the qb as a runner. this is not to say you cant win with a pocket passer. in fact, you have to be able to pass out of the pocket to win in the nfl. but being able to pass AND run is good thing, not a bad thing. and not a marginal thing either.
-
it depend what numbers you choose to look at. if you add up things like "yards" then they probably look similar, but lamar jackson is a former league mvp. his best season was much much better than jared goff's best season. the issue with lamar's performance is his decline from that amazing season and then very good season the next year. since then, he's had two very average seasons. will he ever get back to his league mvp level? but make no mistake, having a dual threat qb with a gun for an arm who played at that level opens up a lot more opportunities for an offense. more than what a non-mobile qb with pocket presence that comes and goes can provide.
-
a healthy lamar jackson is a much better qb than jared goff, but the price to get him and keep him is too high. pass.
-
not worth it.

zach wilson is johnny manziel 2.0. he'll party his way out of football in 2 more years.
-
why would the cardinals do that and not take two #1s from carolina or vegas? or the vikings or bucs? i dont mind the lions moving up for anderson, but not if the price is multiple #1s....and i think it will be.

stafford went from 52 to 55 to 61. that's not a leaps and bounds improvement. also, stafford started for three straight seasons. richardson started for one season and was at 53. almost the same as stafford's first two years and not really far off his third. i think its a fair comparison, but theyre such different types of qbs that its not really an apples to apples thing.
-
yes. yes it would. they have changed the rules from cam's days and protect qbs more now than then. the book on cam being to just beat the shit out of him and it will take his legs away. remember the super bowl with the broncos making all those dirty late hits? cam was kind of like richardson in that he's an amazing athlete, but cam also led an average auburn team to a national championship while richardson led an average florida team to the las vegas bowl. richardson has been described by others as having a better arm than cam, in fact having an otherwordly arm. ive even heard him described as being like stafford in struggling to accuracy for much of his college career but having a gun that you just cant teach. i think this is all moot because richardson is going to get picked before the lions have a shot at him. otoh, justin fields, an athletic qb with questions about his mental processing levels and ability to make quick reads, dropped to the middle of round one so...

the bears are very, very stupid. and will be paying $30 million or so to break that lease.
-
it came on a cd in the mail.
-
the lions set up an llc with government help that avoids tax consequences for them owning a condo. but they really own the condo. the bears rent a condo and pay rent to a landlord who hates them and wont let them get high speed internet or fix the door on the parking garage.
-
lamar was the best player in the league in 2019 and a top 10 player in 2020.... and then has been average. and injured. that's a pretty big bet that he'll return to his form from 4 years ago.
-
i think youre nit picking. the illinois park district owns soldier field. they take care of it, maintain it, and decide who gets to use it. the bears are paying them an obscene amount of money to break the lease and move. the state of illinois controls soldier field, the bears are merely a tenant. the most important tenant, but a tenant nonetheless.
-
the bears leased their stadium from the state of illinois. every other nfl team owns the stadium for all intents and purposes. if there are third party entities that are created to act as "owners" thats for tax purposes.
-
lincoln yards caused a lot of consternation around here because of the racial politics and the tax breaks for the developers. a bears stadium with a huge entertainment complex would have been an interesting alternative. regardless, there are lots of plots of land they could have used, especially 15-20 years ago. instead they put a toiket bowl on top of the existing stadium. the epitome of stupidity, ie: the chicago way.
