  1. i understand. i'm saying that at the time they made that offer it was a low ball offer (look at what seager got). instead of waiting and seeing how the market played out, they paid javy baez. in the end, if they would have waited, they may have been able to get correa for $36 million this year. we'll never know. what we DO know is that correa did eventuay sign a deal for short term money. and that a rival team got a better player than us on a better deal, ergo why i think avila played the market badly. again. maybe if he had a history of making good deals i would be more charitable to him,but his history of poor management and timing leads me to believe he simply got played again.
  2. the tigers wanted correa, they didnt get him, instead their rivals got him, but somehow that means avila did a good job?
  3. but that's what were saying: there was no reason to go to $350 million. the twins got him for $35. instead we have baez for $18 for the next six years.
  4. and the conversation isnt really about whether correa played the market wrong, its whether avila did. so taking the idea that correa played it wrong, did avila take advantage of that? or did he low ball him, get rejected, and then sign an inferior player to a long term contract? he did. which is why - again - he played the market for correa wrong if they wanted correa (which they did if they offered him $275 million).
  5. he set the market for next year and got the most money per year this year. this year had six free agents at his position, next year he's a free agent in a market that will have one premier player at baseball's premier position: him. in the meantime, he's making $35 million. oh, and now were stuck with javy baez for 6 years. are you happy with that scenario?
  6. semien was a terrible signing. seager will pan out. not sure about story. yes mb, there are other bad gms besides Al Avila.
  7. ok, then you should understand why you were wrong before.
  8. exactly. he is above his station. as you say, he was peter principled into a job he is not very good at.
  9. espn + is the best thing to happen to hockey in a long time. its a god send to those of us who live out of market.
  10. because the tigers could have waited and then signed him to a similar deal the twins got him for, in theory. the twins needed a ss too (although unlike us, they have prospects at the position), and instead of paying baez they bided their time and ended up with a much better player on a much more palatable deal. Al got turned down by correa (we believe) and then paid baez on a long term deal. Al has a long history of not reading the market (jd martinez trade, verlander trade, failing to deal boyd) so i'm putting my eggs in the "Al misread things again" basket.
  11. quite possibly. if so, its yet another failure to read the market by al avila. but we'll never really know what they offered correa and why he turned them down.
  12. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34098510/sources-dallas-mavericks-acquire-christian-wood-houston-rockets-26th-pick-nba-draft-4-players christian wood to the mavs for the #26 pick and salary filler. does that set a market for grant? houston just piling up draft picks. how long until were all surprised when we find out the pistons owe them a #1 pick for trevor ariza and isaiah stewart?
  13. i'd be surprised if fetter gors back to the college ranks. he's got to be earning a pretty nice rep in the majors now. why go back to the whims of 18 year olds and traveling by bus to west lafayette and east lansing when you can fly to miami and new york? cmu's head coach seems like a better fit.
  14. that's the thing, the twinkies got him on a perfecr deal and were stuck with baez's decline years for the next half decade. i can understand not wanting correa for 10 years, but for what the twins paid? its a no brainer.
  15. alex cora got another managing job, so will aj hinch. baseball teams look at talent and success more than whether someone hit some trash cans. (because theyre all cheating....ask the yankees)
  16. this. Illitch got wind of DD looking at other jobs and he fired him. loyalty to the family uber alles.
  17. he was rumored to be the gm's choice but reinsdorf overruled him and hired larussa.
  18. i'm scared larussa will die and hinch will get the sox job. lol, what am i saying? reinsdorf would still prop up tony and make him manager, weekend at bernie's style.
  19. me too! if you aint cheatin, you aint tryin!
  20. william clay ford wanted to win too. how many more years until Al "Russ Thomas" Avila gets canned?
