  1. I’ll not say pitchers were ever equal to everyday players as hitters in MLB. The introduction of the DH into the game is nearly 50 years old now. Pitchers don’t bat in college ball or any level of minor league ball to my knowledge. I’m not aware of high school baseball rules regarding pitchers batting. My point is that pitchers’ skills at the plate, by the time they arrive at the major league level have been diminished as a result of never being a part of the offense through their progression up the chain. So today, pitchers are viewed as a wasted at bat. Well, that’s what the system has created over the years. I prefer having pitchers bat-in both leagues. Hated the DH the day the idea was hatched. It seems that the more the game changes, the more problems surface.
  2. Far far away in a land called Lakeland spring training tickets went on sale this morning.
  3. “When national Democrats talk to the country they always seem to be talking to themselves. They are of the left, as is their constituency, which wins the popular vote in presidential elections; the mainstream media through which they send their messages is of the left; the academics, historians and professionals they consult are of the left. They get in the habit of talking to themselves, in their language, in a single, looped conversation. They have no idea how they sound to the non-left, so they have no idea when they are damaging themselves.” - Peggy Noonan I am lukewarm on Noonan but I agree with her point here. In fact, I wonder if Peg has been trolling the Motown Politics Forum.
  4. That sucks but not surprising. So when are they going to retire the NL and AL identifiers?
  5. I’ll plug a book I recently read. Elden Auker (Detroit Tiger 1933-1938) in conjunction with Tom Keegan produced a book titled, ‘Sleeper Cars and Flannel Uniforms.’ For someone that likes Tiger baseball history with a personal touch I highly recommend this book. Auker passed in 2006. He was the last surviving member of the 1935 WS Champions. His stories about players and personalities in his era of the game are treasures. Easy read and very enjoyable.
  6. That’s been my thought process and reasoning as well. However, no further meetings are currently planned and the owners didn’t move on any of the players key demands. I’d be very surprised to see any real movement anytime soon.
  7. After reading the reports on yesterday’s meeting it’s looking like a delayed start is likely. Not surprising I guess.

  9. The two sides have a meeting scheduled Thursday for negotiations. *yawn*
  10. I have no idea what inspired the above comment. Bull Conners!?!? Wow. I’ve never heard of any conversation anywhere regarding suspicions about MLB discouraging black kids from participating in the game.
  11. This has been a primary complaint of mine regarding MLB for quite some time now. After their virtue signaling crusade the last couple of years, they aren’t doing crap for black kids. So much hypocrisy it’s a shame. The SF Giants had “Black Lives Matter” front and center on their website for the longest time. All hypocrisy. What have they done to help black kids play ball at a young age-nothing! What is Manfred and his crowd doing specifically to honestly help black kids get interested in the game and pursue a career in it? I am not aware of anything specific. Joe Morgan, years ago was a part of trying to get something like this off the ground but I don’t know that it ever went anywhere. Latin American players put tons of resources back in their home country's for kids interested in baseball. The decline in black participation in baseball at all levels is sad. The reasons aren’t a mystery but it is still a sad situation.
  12. Every winter I indulge myself reading baseball related books, primarily related to the Detroit Tigers. I’ve been reading two SABR publications that are several years old but still interesting. One is dedicated to the 1935 championship season and the other the 1984 season. I guess you could call this interest my personal hot stove activity. It is definitely a pleasant distraction from what and where the game is today. The one unfortunate takeaway from my readings and interest in the past eras is the glaring difference between what the game was then and what it is today. I know that by today’s standards I’m defined as just an old white guy that can’t adapt to change. I’m fully aware that I am not the guy Manfred & Company care about at all. Manfred is a disaster in so many ways but that isn’t anything I can change. Baseball isn’t the escape from reality that it used to be. It is frustrating but it isn’t going to change.
  13. Yep. We were given the gentle warning that we had to test negative before a weekend visit to see the grandkids. This was before the vaccines were readily available. We were more than happy to oblige. Out of nothing more than curiosity, I still have to wonder how many of these people waiting in line for hours for testing have not been vaccinated. And if they haven’t, why not?
  14. My commentary, free of charge by the way, was not directed at you. Apologies for not clarifying as such.
  15. For what it’s worth… I was listening to an interview with Alex Dickerson of the Giants last year. The interviewer asked Dickerson which guy on the team spent the most time in the weight room. He stated that Kapler spends more time with weights than any player does. I recall Kapler used to be obsessive about his diet and gym regimen. He’s a different bird for sure.
  16. Unfortunately, I don’t see things changing anytime soon.
  17. So I see that there are lines forever across the country waiting to be tested. Are all these people unvaccinated? Is that why they’re standing in the cold for hours to get an answer to whether or not they’ve been exposed? And they still won’t get the shot? Is this correct or am I missing something here?
  18. That Trump handled this irresponsibly is correct. I think it took him way too long to grasp what this was and what it would entail. But, playing devils advocate…the Biden team, prior to the election, raised doubts on the validity of the vaccines for the sake of gaining political advantage in November. Everyone made mistakes. It was a bipartisan effort.
  19. HUGE DISCLAIMER : I do not, and will not, support Trump and agree with much of the criticism leveled at him on this board. However, Archie is 100% correct. Trump did not engineer a new virus in the Wuhan lab, or wherever the hell this thing came from either. I can’t begin to guess at how many comments I read over numerous media boards and conversations the last 18 months that, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘Trump has now killed (fill in # the blank) Americans to date based on virus deaths.’ It was absurd. I now see some of that empty rhetoric directed at Biden. Trump nor Biden is responsible for COVID deaths and the whole blame game accomplishes nothing. It is the lowest common denominator in rational thought. I commend Biden’s efforts in trying to get this thing contained, if that is even possible. It is a tragedy this virus has been politicized the way it has.
  20. I got Kapler’s autograph when we were there in 1999. I remember him being the guy in promoting the K Swiss athletic apparel.
  21. No, that’s when they hire Ron Gardenhire.
  22. Interesting. So is this decision to terminate the MLB team cards a directive from MLB or Bank of America?
