  1. It may have have limited competiton for players. The players, of course, didn't like it because if a very small number of teams drafted them, they had very little leverage.
  2. They had a need for a corner infielder and he could still hit - 30 homers and a .378 OBP in 1983. It was considered a major signing at the time.
  3. It turned out that he was better in 85-87 than the year they won the World Series. The thing I remember most about that signing was being shocked that the cheap Tigers actually signed an expensive player. That was back in the period where they had a free agent "draft" in which teams selected the players with whom they wanted to negotiate. All the big money teams would draft Reggie Jackson, Rollie Fingers and Dave Winfield and the Tigers would draft Mick Kelleher. I was intrigued when the Tigers drafted Evans, but there were about 15 other teams that also drafted him and I never thought the Tigers would get him.
  4. yup! America loves a train wreck.
  5. All he has to do is tell his cult it will be a terrible interview and they will believe it without watching it. Fox News will air a 15 second clip where they take her out of context.
  6. Sounds a bit like his uncle.
  7. He is surprisingly close. He is underrated because he was overshadowed by teammates like Whitaker, Trammell, Morris, Parrish. Or maybe you could say that they all overshadowed each other because they played together for a lot of years, none of them were superstars but all very good.
  8. The US Army and VFW are rigged by radical leftists. That is why you need to vote for Trump.
  9. I agree with this.
  10. I am pretty sure he thinks his supporters are the dumbest people ever.
  11. If he stopped saying stupid **** every time he talks, people might think he's not stupid.
  12. That was a sad, but beautiful article. A lot of what he's going through reminds me of my mom's final years.
  13. They can catch the Red Sox this week. Then they just need to catch one of their central brethren. It's not likely with their depleted staff, but doable.
  14. I think science involving variation between inividuals is never fully settled. There are always going to be pitchers who don't fit the norm.
  15. Yes, they have suggested caveats which make it reasonable in theory.
  16. I had mentioned the three three three rotation. I believe Tango was the first to suggest it. Your three best starters are used traditionally and then you have two bullpen days where the three pitchers pitch three innings apiece. There are also three traditional relievers to finish things off. We may very well be headed in that direction or something close to it. Requiring starters to to pitch six innings per start would put an end to all the recent experimentation. I don't think that's a good idea. I do like watching traditional starters pitch deep into games, but I also don't like to see rules put in place that limit strategy.
  17. Every young woman I know thinks that Trump is disgusting and stupid.
  18. The 65+ group is probably afraid of losing SS/Medicare benefits.
  19. If you know any young woman, remind them to vote this year!
  20. I agree and I am going to put together a team of the most talented players possible. Cutchness exists to an extent, but you just can't predict when it's going to happen. If you try to do it basd on past performance splits you will always being dealing with small sample sizes arising from too many variables.
  21. Vierling is batting .263/,302/.422 with the bases empty and .229/.279/.458 with RISP in limited PA. So, he does not seem to have excess clutchiness. I think clutchiness exists in certain players, but that it's so minor that you can't rely on it on a regular basis. You can't plan around it. Match-ups do matter in the playoffs and throughout the season and I think managers such as Hinch know how to take advantage of them, but you can't know who you are going to face in the World Series. You can't build for a championship. You can only build a talented team that makes the playoffs multiple times and hope that things go right in post-season.
  22. All three of their recent championship teams were like that. Conventional wisdom would say that a team like that would be good during the season but wouldn't be built for a championship.
