  1. I do hope he’s okay. I take it that his family would have come out and changed the narrative by now if he was truly missing. I suspect he’s spoken to a lawyer by now and will turn himself in for arraignment tomorrow or Friday.
  2. The mental attributes that go into someone hiding from prosecution are not usually 100% conscious. The infantile response in the amygdala of fight/flight - or more basically, "if I just hide from the scary thing it will go away" - doesn't really go away as we get older, it just doesn't present itself in the same ways. Usually someone with a warrant who refuses to turn themselves in won't come out and say (even to themselves) "I am wanted and therefore I will hide", it's more a willful (but unconscious) indifference and unrealistic desire that if I just ignore these calls (and presumably voicemails), they'll eventually just go away. It often requires someone with all the necessary knowledge to infuse that errant thinking with direct logic ("no this is not just going away") to get them to address it.
  3. The mandatory moment of silence must be four hours.
  4. Posted for context: Maximum penalties for a third-degree felony is five years in prison, but the ultimate sentence if convicted will be dependent on a whole host of other factors. Sutton deserves his day in court like anyone else, but these are very serious allegations. Based on everything out there right now, I think the Lions should be exploring options to cut ties.
  5. I can be spared from the pearl clutching. It's possible to simultaneously be disgusted by the allegations and domestic violence generally while still wondering what the implications to the team are. There is not a mandatory period of deeper sociological thought required here. I think it's inappropriate for Payton to police people's sympathies and thoughts like this. It also bears mention that for some number of people to whom domestic violence is a very real part of their life, sport serves as a healthy distraction. For those people especially, telling them to think about the domestic violence right now instead of the sport can be incredibly tone deaf to the realities (and prevalence) of domestic violence.
  6. Me either. But he hasn’t been arraigned so it likely just means that he has to stay in custody until arraigned, at which point the judge or magistrate will set a bond. He can’t just turn himself in, post bond, and leave.
  7. I wonder if the Lions are looking to have Goodell place him on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. I believe doing so would mean he would not be included in the present cap figure. At such a point as he is officially found to have violated his contract (thus forfeiting the guaranteed money) he could likely be released at a fraction of the dead cap hit.
  8. This is highly jurisdictional specific. Some police departments and prosecutors will try and some won’t. I’ve seen warrants being issued many months after the alleged incident, and it just lying there for many more months until someone gets pulled over and told surprise, you’ve got a warrant. I suspect this police department knew full well what their sending out a “Warrant Wednesday” on an NFL player would do though.
  9. Probably not. If the police haven't been able to get in touch with him, I doubt he's been forthcoming with his employer about it. And it's not like the Lions can monitor every county's criminal justice system just in case one of their players is issued a warrant.
  10. I wondered whether Zeitler would slide into RG or LG. It looks like he's played RG his entire career, so I would expect Glasgow to be told he's the starting LG now. Glasgow has bounced all around the IOL through his career so it shouldn't be too difficult for him to be full-time on the left side. I'm not sure if he's been noticeably better at RG or LG. The difference in what is asked of you isn't substantial at the NFL level but the footwork is very different.
  11. Back to back truly remarkable offseasons for Brad. He assumed the role of villain last season. Not to get too corny but I think a better mantra is assassin. He sits quietly in the shadows. Lets other teams blow half their cap on the flashy signings. Lets the expensive home grown free agent walk, seemingly endangering the most important position group. And then a week later signs an arguable upgrade to replace him and you look back and every position group of need has been upgraded.
  12. It's crazy when a move you think is obvious actually works out.
  13. When the Eagles drafted Carson Wentz #2 in 2016 and already had Sam Bradford on the roster (whom they had acquired for a 5th round pick in 2015), they held onto Bradford all the way until the 2016 preseason. They ultimately traded him to the Vikings for a 2017 1st round pick and conditional 4th round pick after Teddy Bridgewater tore his ACL. Fields is better than 2016 Bradford, let alone David Blough. I don't think he would have gotten a 1st, but he would have gotten better than a 6th.
  14. I was expecting an extension. Maybe they will take a corner in round one.
  15. DPJ was originally signed to replace Kalif Raymond when he got hurt. Now that I think about, they’re actually probably offering Reynolds WR4 money, because Kalif got WR3 (and return specialist) money last year. So DPJ is really getting “you can compete with Antoine Green and any rookie we draft” money.
  16. I don’t think signing DPJ stops them from bringing either Reynolds back or from drafting a WR3. I think it’s likely that Reynolds is asking for WR2 money and the Lions are offering WR3 money. DPJ got WR4+ money.
  17. I wonder if he knew he would be immediately named as the backup. Bears should have just waited until the fall. When a QB went down in week two, they could have gotten a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.
  18. @RedRamageyou seem knowledgable about the USFL.... or UFL.... or whatever. How sustainable? Are they about to fold midseason? I have an opportunity to purchase Row 1 season tickets right behind the Panthers bench, and I'm wondering if it's worth it. I'm sure I would go to a game or two. I miss football. But I would also re-sell a few. I just don't want the league to fold on my way to Ford Field lol.
  19. There's a reason it's 1.1. Only room for improvement. 😉

  21. I don't think he's very good. He's no Mahomes or Brady and his career is already on the downhill because his strength is his legs... But I do think that he could have succeeded at a very high level, and fooled a lot of people for a long time, in a better situation. Maybe even in Pittsburgh. It will be interesting to see. Cam Newton and Fields' new teammate Russell Wilson are two who come to mind. Cam was MVP and led the Panthers to a 15-1 season and a Super Bowl appearance. Wilson was an MVP candidate for a season or two and led the Seahawks to two Super Bowls, winning one. I think Justin Fields is on par with either of them. I don't think either are all that great. But they were used masterfully by Ron Rivera and Pete Carroll, who were able to gameplan to their strengths and surround them with the necessary talent. Watch Fields for the first half of the season last year. The Bears wouldn't let him run! In the six games before his injury, he averaged 39.5ypg on the ground. By the time he returned, with the Bears at 3-7, finally Nagy let him run and he averaged almost double that, 79ypg in his final seven games. And they went 4-3 in that stretch (including the game against Detroit that their coaching and defense totally blew in the last four minutes).
  22. When you talk about a franchise ruining a career, look no further than the Justin Fields case study. He could have been an MVP candidate with a more competent franchise.
  23. It exists everywhere to some extent, and it's widespread knowledge among the student body which major it is. Was always funny to me to look at the baseball starting lineup in undergrad and see eight of the nine were Communications majors. Figured there must be significant overlap between the skills of hitting a baseball and the desire to communicate effectively.
