To defend the officials briefly, you can kind of see why it’s so hard to get this correct. The referee in the frame can’t tell if he’s got the shoulder pad or face mask. The official opposite the one in frame is looking through the defender to see it. No referee is where the camera angle shows it to be obvious. It all is happening obscenely fast.
You’re basically asking them to call something they don’t see, that is probably (but maybe not) there based on all the indicators available (the way the head turns, the way Darnold immediately reacts, and the way the defender reacts). And when you go off of cues instead of actually seeing it happen, you can just as easy get a phantom face mask on Aaron Rodgers when none occurred, where he then rips a Hail Mary off a Jim Caldwell defense that is guarding the sidelines.
