It seems less likely since Carolina traded to #1. (I thought they might pick up the fourth QB at 6, giving Detroit the 9 and a second for the privilege. Instead they traded their next three drafts because the owner and and GM and coach don't seem to agree on who they want.) They will pick a QB, Houston will at 2, the Colts will at 4. If someone wants to trade up for a QB, they will likely trade up to 3 rather than 6. But maybe Arizona stays put and takes Anderson and Richardson is hanging out there when the Lions go on the clock. And maybe something crazy happens with Baltimore and they suddenly need a QB. OTOH, I've seen a mock draft that has QBs going 1, 2, 3, 4, and Seattle taking Tyree Wilson at 5, leaving Anderson at 6. We can keep our fingers crossed.

Still haven't seen the Anzalone terms. DetroitLions.com doesn't even say the dollar amount, just that "additional terms were not disclosed." https://www.detroitlions.com/news/lions-re-sign-lb-alex-anzalone-to-contract-extension-through-the-2025-season Makes me wonder if only the first year is guaranteed. And AAV is $6.25 million, but it's probably spread out more like $5.5 million, $6 million, $7.25 million, where he'll never see the third year.

Just listening to Pat Kirwan. He says he thinks Bijan will be off the board before pick 9. 🤷🏻♂️

Yes, this has stuck in my mind about Anderson. People say a lot of things about prospects. By definition you don’t have a generational prospect every draft. I like that he’s bulked up. But it still seems moot, especially since Carter is sinking like a stone.
-
Anderson is small. Just 235 lbs. Detroit doesn’t have anyone on the DL that small. I guess size hasn’t been an issue for Micah Parsons who is listed at 245. But that’s my concern about Anderson… who almost certainly won’t drop to 6 anyway.

This whole circus is exactly what I need to get me through to draft day! Couldn't happen to a more deserving franchise, either. So arrogant after 30 years of HOF QB play that they can kick a multiple MVP winner to the curb and think they’ll move on to another star. Now let’s hope this leads them to 30 years of QB purgatory.

Except Jamaal. I don’t know why, but I have a picture in my head of Jamaal standing on one side of the bargaining table doing his signature hip thrusts and saying, “Come on Mr. Brad, let’s get it done,” and Holmes looking unimpressed.

Yes, it is one thing to get sucked into racing when it appears the whole team is doing it. It is another thing altogether to blow off prep for the job interview when a $35 million offer is at stake.
-
Swift was at the top of the league with 3.8 yards before contact per rushing attempt. Craig Reynolds had 3.0 ybc/carry. Jamaal had 2.5 (reflecting his short yardage usage). Montgomery had just 2.1. Montgomery had 1.9 yards after contact. Jamaal had 1.6, Reynolds 1.5, Swift 1.7. With the extra yard or so before contact that this OL will provide him, Montgomery should have a nice season.
-
Add me to the list of people who think Carter now has to be off the board. If you cannot even manage your weight and perform basic workouts, you cannot be drafted in the top 5-10 picks. Gonzalez is probably the guy. Sutton gives you an #1 for the next few seasons, and while Okudah and Moseley will compete for #2, neither of them can be wholly relied on even this season and certainly not next.
-
Montgomery was near top of the league in broken tackles, his OL was near the bottom of the league in protecting him from contact after scrimmage. Just 1.19 yards before contact for his carries.
-
Walter Football hates it so much he gave it a grade of Millen! But he gave the Anzalone signing a B+. Chicago fans seem upset to lose Montgomery, and I like that Holmes was disciplined and held his ground with Willams.
-
I don’t think so. Swift has one year left. Maybe he’ll be healthy for it. Montgomery for three years.
-
This is Brad Holmes not overpaying for Jamaal Williams.

Yeah, but the subtext of the whole situation is that lots of people in the UGA program are doing this. As I recall, when the police let him off the hook the first time, the cop told him to tell the rest of the team not to speed. It is not an excuse for Carter having done it, but I suspect that the timing of the charges being announced was calculated by the DA as a shot across Kirby Smart's bow. Get your program under control.

I haven't heard anything that seemed official, or that seemed like it was from official sources, relating to Carter. All I've heard is speculation that Sheila would be uncomfortable with him. They will do their due diligence on him. I could see it going two ways. One, an aggressive DA wanted to make a point to Kirby Smart to get his players under control by embarrassing his top NFL prospect with the most aggressive possible set of charges right during the combine. If that's the case, Carter is guilty of very bad judgment for racing, but didn't drive the car that crashed, didn't force the other driver to race, and didn't get cited for being under the influence. In this case, you pretend to walk slow to the podium and take him. The other is that they turn over the rocks a bit more and find out that Carter is full of problems and undraftable. I suspect it's number one.

Always nice to have a @MotownWebGuy sighting! Thanks for bringing us knuckleheads together.

Neither of them will sign a one year deal. Probably both of them will look for a three year deal. And neither of them is going to come in and mentor any rookies in a defense they are just learning. At any rate, if their chief skills are physical, what could they possibly teach a rookie? Either the rookie is fast and strong or he is not. OTOH, the entire Lions coaching staff has raved about Anzalone's ability to teach defense to the rookie Rodrigo. And he did it at a third of what Wagner or David will make. Wagner and David were never going to be the first guys to sign. They want to wait and see what the market will bring them. They don't care about the rebuild, the culture, restoring the roar, whatever, and they don't have to. They care about making the most dollars they can in the short time they have left. More power to them. But that doesn't mean I think my team should make them the team's second-highest paid player after the QB. What message does that send? Work your butt off, Anzalone, be a leader on the field and off, do everything we ask you to do, and... we'll replace you with a mercenary. Might as well light the culture right on fire.
-
Priceless. Do you think Wagner or David will sign for anything less than double the AAV of Anzalone? They will both be using the Edwards contract as their landmark, 3x what Anzalone got AAV. And we have no idea about the guarantee. Again, Wagner/David will use $50 million as their landmark, discounted due to age. Anzalone will probably have no more than $12 million guaranteed.

He’s arguably the second most important player on the defense behind Hutch and he got paid market rate for his position in free agency.
-
Seems like they view him as the QB of the defense. He played 95% of defensive snaps last year. Who was going to come in from the outside and take that role?
-
“I’ll be quarterbacking the New York Jets from a sensory deprivation tank in the Sonoran desert.”
-
There you go. They filled their biggest need with a very good player on reasonable terms. Now we can put away the pitchforks.

Yes, I was responding to the same post you were responding to. We agree that Holmes knows what he’s doing… and shouldn’t get hammered for not making decisions he can’t start making until next week 😂 I still haven’t seen anything to indicate they were “IN” on Ramsey. There were rumors for obvious reasons, and undoubtedly Holmes called to check the price, or was called to gauge interest. But usually if things get heated up someone (an agent) leaks it. There were no such leaks which makes me suspect that Holmes probably didn’t do anything more than see the Rams’ asking price and Ramsey’s contract expectations.
