Week Fourteen: Detroit Lions (9-3) @ Chicago Bears (4-8)
NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Suh is a frontrunner. He's only going to sign with a true contender/big name team so I expect either the Ravens, Niners or Eagles to snag him, maybe Miami? -
In my lifetime? #1 by a very large margin and Holmes is the best Lions GM by an even larger margin. It's a combination of these guys knowing what they're doing and also how low the bar was set in the last 35+ years, I can't speak on the regimes prior to the Schmidt/Fontes regime.

It should also be noted when evaluating the defense is that they've been missing their best PURE pass rusher and quite possibly their two best secondary players pretty much the entire season. That would be tough for most teams to overcome and is also why I have a hard time putting all the blame on Glenn. I see issues with Glenn's scheme in terms of not knowing when to blitz, blitzing at the wrong times, not using enough D-Line stunts, coverage disguises etc. but he's working with a beat up group. -

They're flawed particularly in the secondary but I'm just saying they get different treatment than the Lions because their group is established winners while the Lions are still in the "prove it" stage. Plus, they're just more talented overall and people believe in their talent. -

The Eagles have earned their rep as a SB participant just last season with pretty much the same team they have now while the Lions haven't won a playoff game yet so there's a reason why the Eagles get the benefit of the doubt in the comparison. -

Maybe it'll be different on the road but the Lions ran well against the Bears the first time, I actually think they didn't run it enough even though they were playing from behind a lot of the game. They only held the Lions to 115 yards because the Lions didn't run a lot, Montgomery had over 6 yards a carry. This won't be a "spread out" game, they need to establish the run early and often or it'll be a long day at the office. -

This will be a good test for the Lions and Goff in particular playing outdoors in the elements. The Bears are playing really well as well so this would be an impressive win if the Lions can get it and quite possibly set up a win division scenario against Denver. -

It looks like they're playing him off ball more often which is helping to free him up a bit instead of multiple guys blitzing him constantly when he's doing all the ballhandling. -

Oh damn. I had no idea yet I'm completely unsurprised that Gores would do something like that. -

I didn't like it either because he could have hurt himself. On a related note, I have no idea why they aren't getting the ball in his hands more not even in conventional routes necessarily but on screen plays, sweeps etc. He makes good things happen just about every time he gets the ball, the few times he does. -

I believe if the Packers lose once, the Vikings lose once and the Lions beat the Bears next week that they can clinch by winning the Denver game so I think the magic number is 4 or maybe it is 3 if @MichiganCardinal is right. -

Oh, don't get me wrong. The 2023 Vikings is a big upgrade on what they were when Quinntricia left them in ashes but this is a one and done team. They have a long way to go to be a real contender IMO. -

Yep. If they win this game, it's merely lipstick on a pig. MAJOR problems still persist. -

5 out of 6 games where they've looked like garbage for the most part. The book is out on them now and they've been exposed as a result. Also, Ben Johnson has called a garbage game today. Not running enough when they were up 21-0, no misdirections, a pitch to Montgomery on another possession that stood out as WTF. Just a bad team right now. -

It's not an athleticism issue with Cade. Look at a lot of top players. Luka, Tatum, SGA, Booker, Banchero to use a Cade peer example and perhaps the most underrated player in the league in Brunson. The problem with Cade outside of the fact that he's not a true point guard and is getting deployed as one is the lack of spacing so he gets crowded a lot. Just watch last night when the Knicks were blitzing him in the 4th and he had to work his way around it. There's not one player in the starting lineup that is part of a defensive gameplan for the opponent so the onus is completely on Cade to create offense. There is some self improvement needed in his game but I don't think it's the lack of athleticism holding him back because he's crafty enough to get to his spots. It's the deployment and the supporting cast. There's only a select few players that can carry the entire weight of a franchise. Cade is just not on that level, he's not a Luka, he's not a Lebron that can carry a weak supporting cast. Look at the supporting cast of the guys above... Tatum has Brown, Holiday, White, Smart previously. SGA has/had Dort, Giddey, Williams, Chet now. Booker had CP3, Bridges etc. Banchero has Wagner (another supremely underrated player), Anthony, Suggs is coming into his own. Brunson has Randle, Barrett, Quickley Cade has Killian Hayes, the Isiah Plugs, rookie Ausar who can't hit the broad side of a barn with his shot and Duren who brings no creation to the table. Enough said really. It's hard to properly evaluate Cade until he has at least a few NBA level starters around him. Even 1 would be nice, he has zero currently. -

People who blame Cade for any of this need to watch the 4th quarter on repeat. At least 4-5 passes to wide open 3 point shooters namely those two plugs Livers and Stewart and it was brick after brick. Get Cade some freaking help already. It's ridiculous how poor his supporting cast is. That leads me to my next point. He seems like a nice guy but what he in the hedoublehockeysticks do people see in Livers? I see some fans saying "Lets wait until Livers gets back in the lineup", coaches also seem to love this guy. He hustles but I don't see anything he does at an above average NBA level. He used to be able to shoot 3's but he can't even do that with any consistency anymore. Players like him, Stewart, Hayes despite his good offensive game last night (he was a horror show defensively) have no place in an NBA starting lineup. Even Duren is barely passable as a starter. What a mess. -

Remember when he took Hayes over Hailburton then traded a 1st that still hasn't conveyed and is restricting them from making a significant trade for Stewart and also traded Kennard a bunch of stuff to draft Bey only to trade him a few years later for James Bustman who Weaver was allegedly trying to trade up for in that same draft? Incompetence isn't even the word. -

They do but they need to do something in season. They can't let the ship continue to sink like this because they run the risk of ruining these young players for good. It can be argued that they are already ruined but what we're seeing this season is absolute rock bottom and, yes, I do think that Monty is at least partially responsible for that. Firing Weaver right now will do nothing or Tellum or whichever suit but changing the coach can. I don't know what else can be done outside of letting it ride and letting them firgure it out for themselves but I don't see that happening anytime soon. -

Campbell is athletic but he's not explosive or a fluid mover, his movements are stiff. I'm sure he'll be a solid player but I don't see him as a dynamic playmaker or as somebody that will really impact the defense. I think you need more than "solid" at 18. I'm sure they liked the athletic profile but Campbell is the prototypical Dan Campbell guy so I think they saw him as the best culture fit of the available players. He was a reach pick.
