Week Seventeen: Detroit Lions (11-4) @ Dallas Cowboys (10-5)
NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
The scheme has been ****. Decker one on one with Parsons on the 4th down, Decker and Jackson crashing down inside freeing up Lawrence on 3rd down, where's Montgomery?, going to the draw play too often on 3rd down etc. Lots of issues with scheme and player usage in that half. -

Jackson and Decker were horribad in that half and I don't mean to fuel the TP Hate Johnson Narrative but that half wasn't one of Ben's finer moments, to say the least. -

People need to chill on Ausar, a rookie in an impossible situation to succeed. Look at his confidence the first 10 or so games of the season compared to now, night and day. A good coach would figure out a way to incorporate him into the rotation despite the shooting issues but this coach is too interested in "sending messages" than actually letting these young players work through difficulties so now we get a kid with wrecked confidence. That method of breaking them down before building them back up works for some but most young players need the confidence of their coach to have confidence in their own game and Monty has effectively lost the confidence of just about every young player on this roster. There's a bundle of talent and Basketball IQ to work with Ausar so I hope this coach or the next one doesn't waste it. -
Ziggy Ansah outcome with a 6th round pick is a homerun. Not sure if you meant this as a bad thing or not.

I'd love to **** on A-Aron as much as anybody but that's a misleading headline. He did nothing but compliment the Lions after that, Amon-Ra in particular. He said he's not happy because he will root for the Packers, I can respect that.

I think it is guaranteed if they lose. Fair to give Teddy some minutes in his final game but they have to give Hooker a quarter or two to at see something out of him. Hopefully they win this week and make next week meaningful. -

I know people don't want to hear it but the best possible solution, since they have no interest in making real changes to the front office, is to stand pat with the young core and target mid level vets that know how to play a 2 way game. Like it or not, THIS group (Cade, Ausar and Duren) along with the 2024 pick will be the Pistons core so these are the guys they'll have to develop. Get rid of the dead weight, free Ivey, and bring in some competent support players. Guys like Siakam, OG, Harris and Bridges (why the F would they target this piece of filth?) are not going to move the needle in any meaningful direction, the Pistons are just too many players away from being 1-2 players away. Those are the type of players that a team like Orlando, Houston or Indiana should target. Teams that are 1-2 players from contention, maybe OKC with their war chest of assets to work with. -
Actually, Isiah Thomas is underrated because the stat nerds like to use solely spreadsheets to determine how good a player is. I'll take that guy in a big game against just about anybody in history but I digress. Speak about not caring, do many people even care about the NBA before the merger? There were some classic players back then but the NBA didn't really become what we know it as today until Bird/Magic graced the league. If we want to talk team success over the decades, what have the Bulls done outside of the MJ era? The Sixers have had a lot of bad teams over the years but also a lot of great players so it depends on criteria. Anyway, yes we can agree to disagree but also agree that Gores ruined the franchise.
-
I think "mostly bad" is hyperbole. They had 46+ win seasons from '84-'92, had 3 down years then 46 and 54 in the Teal era then 3 down years before winning 50+ from '02-'08 so that's essentially 6-7 mediocre to bad years in a 25 year period.
-
Probably not the Sixers in terms of name brand but the Rockets and Bucks certainly. Are we talking "storied" in terms of team success or in terms of great players. It's hard to compete with Alcindor, Big O and Giannis so the Bucks are more storied in that respect. I'm not even sure about the Bulls, they had the Jordan era and nothing else. In any event, the Pistons were one of the more successful NBA franchises in the modern era before Gores took over.
-
Yes they are. They aren't the Lakers, Celtics or Bulls but they've had extended championship runs in the modern era (1980-present), not many franchises can boast that. They were a winning team (45+ win team) from 84-92, 95-96 then 02-08 with 3 Championships and 5 Finals appearances so I'd say that they've been a top 5 NBA franchise from 1980-2010 pre-Gores. If you talk all time then maybe that's a different story but the NBA was also a lot different prior to the merger.

12/26 @ 7PM Brooklyn Nets Vs Detroit Pistons
NYLion replied to Tigeraholic1's topic in Detroit Pistons
There are none outside of trading core players. The 1st is on freeze for the sake of getting the pick to trade Isiah Stewart. Out of all the bad moves Weaver made, this one is the most damaging. The entire 2020 draft really. -

That was pretty bad but their championship window was closed anyway and it was time to move on. That doesn't hold a candle to a clueless dimwitted owner buying the team and sewering which was once a proud franchise. -

Two things that I've been saying all season still hold true. Cade deserves better and Monty is poison to this team and is the worst thing to happen to this franchise outside of the day Gores bought the team. -
The difference between a lot of these guys, Hutch included, is that he has the athleticism to not only get home on the QB but to also keep him honest in terms of evading the pocket, just look at those plays he made on Fields in open space in that highlight reel. This is my biggest issue with the D-line, lack of dynamic athleticism. Even an old fart like Irvin showed in his limited snaps what kind of impact an athletic edge can have. Bringing up CJGJ also got me to thinking that people have been a little too hard on Glenn. While his schemes have certainly been questionable at times, they've missed 3 of their better defensive players pretty much the entire season in CJGJ, Houston and Moseley with a 4th in McNeil being out the last few weeks. I'm sure their pass defensive improvements were heavily dependent on not only Houston being even close to what he was last year but CJGJ and Moseley playing big roles. Without those guys, the latter two in particular, the Lions has lacked athleticism and also experience. It's been Sutton, Anzalone and a bunch of young guys still learning the game. It's no wonder why the defense is very hit and miss in the passing game in particular and a lot more miss usually.
-
I think some people forget how impactful Houston was last year. This is just a 6 game reel of all sorts of different ways Houston impacted the game. Insert THIS guy into the lineup and the Lions can make a real run...

We know all too well how dominant the '91 Redskins were. I was too young to remember the '85 Bears but the '91 Redskins might have been the best NFL team I've ever seen, they were untouchable that year. I think the Niners are one of the most talented teams of the last 40 years but 11-4 is hardly a sign of dominance.

Patterson is 16 of 19 from 40-49 and a perfect 6 for 6 in his Detroit career.
-
Patterson is better. Patterson is 88% career on FGs while Badgley is 82%. Patterson is 16 for 19 from 40-49, Badgley is 36 for 47. Patterson 3 for 6 from 50+ while Badgley is 5 for 13!!! Patteson is an average NFL kicker, it can be argued that Badgley doesn't belong in the NFL at all. It's really important to have a good kicker in the playoffs, this could be a fatal error by Holmes this season. Campbell is going to have to be even more aggressive than his usual aggressive self.

1991 but that came down to the last game when they won at, I believe, Buffalo. The Lions winning the division with games left in the season is a novelty for us Lions fans. -
That's because Goff is in a much more perfect situation. Oh wait....

Having a division locked up with 2 games to go is a comforting feeling that most of us have never experienced as a Lions fan, unless anybody here is like 80 years old. Kind of surreal now that it's taken time to set in. -
Patterson is better than Badgley. Love just about everything Holmes has done but his inability to properly address the kicker situation in 3 years is bizarre. It hasn't hurt them yet although one can argue that Campbell would be less inclined to take 4th quarter gambles with a better kicker but I fear that one game when they have the ball around the 35 yard line near the end of a game and lose because they can't kick 50+ yard FGs.

Week Sixteen: Detroit Lions (10-4) @ Minnesota Vikings (7-7)

I could be wrong but I think the Lions win the common opponent tiebreaker if both them and the Eagles win out so the Lions just need to win the last two. -

Just last year they started 1-6. They went from 4-17-1 to start the Campbell era to going 19-6 and a division title just a year later like the flip of a switch. It has to be one of the more remarkable turnarounds in league history, literally turned from losers to winners on a dime although I think most of us knew that they were better than a 1-6 team last season as there was a lot of close losses mixed in there.
