NYLion replied to casimir's topic in Detroit Pistons
It's a nightmare. The Pistons are now paying for the winning they did in two extended Championship windows in the past. It's odd because I don't think they're that much less talented than the Magic or the Pacers but they are light years behind both. What is it about this culture that brings out the least in their players? Is it the depressing Detroit winters? Is it coaching? Is it the water? I know it's a team of mostly young guys but there isn't a lack of talent with the core. It's either continuous 4th quarter collapses or not competitive at all and it's getting worse all the time. -

What a pitiful franchise. I look at franchises like the Magic and Thunder that were down there with the Pistons just 2 years ago and see them as legit contenders now while the Pistons are even worse than 2 years ago and the Thunder and Magic are doing that without making any panicked win now moves by simply superior drafting and developing. This might be one of the worst teams of all time that we're watching and I didn't think it was possible for them to be worse than last year yet.... here we are. They are so used to losing that they don't know how to play any other way. This is the downside to doing a full scale rebuild and this rebuild looks cooked already. Rough The worst part of this is that this draft absolutely blows. Del or somebody, please tell me that there's somebody worthwhile to be excited about in this draft. Just humor me. -
Week Thirteen: Detroit Lions (8-3) @ New Orleans Saints (5-6)
NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
Precisely. In an odd way, it's kind of encouraging that they beat the Raiders, Bears and were somewhat within striking distance of Green Bay (should have been closer if it wasn't for that idiotic fake punt call) considering that they heavily lost the turnover battle in each game. 10-2 in those 3 games. If the Lions are relatively even in turnovers even with a shaky defense, there's no reason they can't go 4-2 but that's a big IF considering what we've seen 3 of the last 4 weeks against teams they should have beaten, by more in the case of the Raiders and Bears. It's mostly on Goff. I believe 9 of those 10 turnovers came from him with the Reynolds return fumble against the Bears being the lone exception. Actually the Reynolds "fumble" against the Raiders too near the goal line so 8 in 3 games by Goff. That needs to be cut down on significantly. -

New Orleans is a **** team that has some key injuries, this would be a really bad loss and signal a collapse if the Lions don't win this one. Not saying "must win" but they need to get their game back on track and Goff in particular needs to take care of the ball, something he was so good at until the Ravens game and hasn't been the same since Chargers game notwithstanding. -
Week Twelve: Green Bay Packers (4-6) @ Detroit Lions (8-2)

Because rushing 4 isn't working so why not try something different? You know when the Lions defense looked best this season? When they blitzed more frequently. The best way to protect a suspect secondary is by giving them less time to cover. You do run the risk of a bigger play happening but there's also a better chance to stop those intermediate plays that constantly kill the Lions and a better chance of forcing a mistake by the QB especially these mediocre ones they've been playing most of the season. -

Look at who you're trying to reason with. It's a fruitless exercise trying to help those who don't want to be helped. I'm pretty down on the team as well but saying there's "zero" chance they win in New Orleans against the .500 Saints is pure rubbish but TP does love those piping hot takes. -

I thought the Baltimore game was the wakeup call, or the Raiders game with all the errors, or the Bears game. We might need to come to the realization that this could very well be a .500 team disguised as 8-3, like the Vikings last year. -

Goff might be broken. I'm starting to feel stupid for wanting him to get signed to the big extension. -

I was willing to chalk the Bears game up to just being one of those games but when you look at the totality of it since Baltimore, it's now a growing pattern that makes me think the 8-2 record is a fluke and that this team is about to crumble down the stretch. Baltimore obvious disaster, so many errors in the Raiders game, 5 straight TDs for the Chargers and now these last two abominations. These guys might be frauds. -

The Lions should be the ones that come out swinging with being at home on Thanksgiving following arguably their worst performance of the Campbell era. Add in that the Packers have a lot of injuries and I'd be disappointed and a bit concerned if this wasn't a double digit victory. -

That game was peak SOL. That team was a one and done anyway but that game was a microcosm of the last 60+ years of Lions football all wrapped up in one game. -
You give them a heavy dose of Montgomery and Gibbs in an outside road playoff game, that's where the Lions strength lies. Unfortunately, the Eagles strength is up front so it would be strength vs. strength but I'd like my chances at Philly better relying on the running game than Goff's arm.
-
The goal should be Superbowl, not rooting for a lesser seed just so they could have an easier 1st playoff game opponent IMO. I guess it depends on fan perspective. I see an 8-2 Lions team regardless of flaws so I see an opportunity to make a deep run and want what's best for a SB run. I don't see a team that should be happy with a 1st round win, that's a Caldwell Lions goal. Getting a bye gets you one step closer to a SB and homefield is critical. Sure it would be nice to break the playoff losing streak but I'm rooting for the best path to a Superbowl.
-
Nah you want the 1 seed especially in the Lions case, you want home field throughout and you get the only 1st round bye with the 1 seed. You're going to have face the best competition eventually whether it's as a 1 or 2 seed.

Week Eleven: Chicago Bears (3-7) @ Detroit Lions (7-2)

I never understood the character concern argument. He's never had any off the field issues as far as we know and look at how he interacts with his teammates even when he's not involved in the offense (always the first to celebrate with his guys, root them on etc.), not to mention that he does things like making key blocks when he's not being targeted. There are plenty of diva receivers that would pout when they're not getting enough touches, Jamo always seemed to be involved with the team. We'd all like to see him make more plays/get more targets but I don't see any character concerns with him whatsoever. Also, he's getting progressively better every week you can see them starting to get him more involved. I have a feeling that he's on the verge of a breakout not to the point of being a legit #1 receiver but as a more consistent big play threat. -
No, I'm saying two compensatory picks for Glenn leaving then hiring Vrabel to replace Glenn if he's a free agent would be a dream.
-
Two 3rd round picks and hire Vrabel as DC? That would be a dream.

Week Eleven: Chicago Bears (3-7) @ Detroit Lions (7-2)

It's not even that they got conservative, they did throw deep on 3rd, it was that they left their biggest weapon which is Fields legs on the shelf. Lucky us. -

NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
The Lions couldn't stop Fields on that counter play and they didn't run it once on that final drive. I thought for sure that they'd do it on 3rd and long and when he threw deep, I felt relief. That's why teams like the Bears constantly remain bad. -

Goff did play poorly but 2 of those INTs was just bad luck. LaPorta running into the Bear defender so he was absent at the spot where the ball ended up and the 3rd INT was a tipped ball. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Lions in this game and they still won, that in itself should be encouraging. One issue I have, besides the complete inability to stop a running QB, is that they need to run the ball more. Montgomery gets chunks every time he touches the ball, 12 rushes isn't enough. Same with Gibbs, needs more touches. -

Holy Hell did they pull that one out of the fire, I could only imagine what a gong show this thread was during the game haha. That might have been the worst game they've played in the Dan Campbell era then they pulled on their big boy pants and somehow someway won a game they had no business winning. I'm not even going to analyze what went wrong. Just be happy that they won a game playing their D game which is pretty impressive considering how they were just giving the game away time and time again. On to Thanksgiving you turkeys. -

It's funny that you don't think Montgomery would have made a difference. Anyway, we'll never know so maybe we should move on? The team is 7-2, that's pretty good no? -

Sure but it's hard to already look ahead to next season when they're 7-2 with a manageable schedule in the last 8. I wouldn't necessarily write off the team this season just because Holmes didn't trade for a Chase Young type at the deadline. -

That's because you're just looking at sack numbers. He's one of the tops in the league in QB pressures, is excellent in the run game and even drops back in pass coverage at times, not to mention that he draws all the attention of the offense because of the lack of a bookend edge to ease the pressure off of him. In a lot of ways, he's actually better than last year despite pacing for slightly less sacks.
