  1. Back when workers owed their souls to the company store...
  2. And yikes on the memory issue... one of the fun parts about being a middle aged woman is what we call menofog.
  3. It could be simply who was polled. A lot of people (me included) will not answer phones or take surveys online either. And to be fair, I think a lot of registered Democrats are not satisfied with the way the Ds in Washington are handling things right now-in fact some are furious. I don't know how many for the same reason I can't say this poll is accurate.
  4. He can't stand that there's a place people can go and get books, movies, and a lot of other things for free.
  5. True, and I remember that looking at a computer all day did a number on my eyes, and I had a lot of headaches. And that was 25 years ago, so I can't imagine what it would be like for me today. As much as I love working, I do want to be able to retire one day.
  6. I'm not exactly sure where this belongs, but I'm getting emails for a 14 day trial for Amazon Health. I do NOT trust Amazon for healthcare, and I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.
  7. Also it's often people who don't work physically demanding jobs who are saying that working at the age of 88 is a good thing. I always said that I didn't want to stop working until I was around 70, but now my body is beginning to tell me that I'll most likely have retire quite a bit earlier. And, based on what I hear from others in my field, I'm far from alone.
  8. I don't have a problem with people who want to work rather than retire, however, I suspect this is a way to 'prove' that people should once again work until death. I once had a coworker collapse on the job, who ended up dying the next day. He was 75. It's something that has stuck with me and a fate I wouldn't wish on anyone.
  9. Agree 100%
  10. So much for laid in America....
  11. It's that time of year when you can get cabbage for 17 cents a pound. There are fewer things I like better than boiled cabbage with smashed potatoes, butter, and black pepper.
  12. I'd be open to tweaking parts of the way the government is organized-I just haven't got a clue where to start.
  13. It's interesting because one of the things that I like about being in STEM, especially in a university setting, is how diverse the workforce is. I guess I'll have to admit that I will never understand people.
  14. In your defense.... it's pretty easy to overspend at Starbucks.
  15. Wait, so all people have to do is convince others to commit murder instead of doing it themselves, and their hands will be clean? Lovely.
  16. This probably shows my age: "Unless we each conform, unless we obey orders, unless we follow our leaders blindly, there is no possible way we can remain free." -Major Frank Burns
  17. It's truly amazing how different many of the cities I know look now thanks to clean air and water. I'd really rather not go back to seeing rivers catch fire.
  18. Is this one of her five accomplishments?
  19. Looks like I picked the wrong week to read In the Garden of Beasts....
  20. Not sure about now, but in the past it hasn't been at all uncommon for a New Yorker to never learn how to drive.
  21. I think somebody already hacked into the DOGE website a few weeks ago, and said it was easy to do so. Now people need to start hacking wherever his money is.
  22. Musk has a list of people he blames for paying protestors to make trouble for him at Tesla stores. Of course Soros is on the list (he really does get around). At least two of the people on the list are dead-wow, that's a pretty neat trick to keep it up after death! But more seriously, Elon-people are protesting you because they really, really hate you.
  23. My guess is it's already happening.
  24. Most of you probably know that I've always been interested in the WWII/Nazi GermanyHolocaust era... So it's a bit surprising that I only heard of this book from 2011: In the Garden of Beasts, by Erik Larson. I've only just started it, but it looks like it'll be easy to get into.
  25. The ages of some of the cast of the 1950 version were pretty out there... IIRC the mother of the bride actress was only 10 years older than the guy who played the groom.
