2024 - 2025 Detroit Tigers Offseason
papalawrence replied to AlaskanTigersFan's topic in Detroit Tigers
I just did a quick check on catchers and their initial big league experience. I checked Bench, Piazza, IRod, Rogers, Freehan, Parish and Avila. Only one hit out of the gate, that was Alex Avila. Bench's first year he was 14 for 86, ops+ of 26. Freehan had an ops of .718 and did well. His sample is 300 ab though, not sure how he started. Jake Rogers? Ouch!! 14 for 112. Not that Jake is an average hitter now. Even IRod's ops+ his first season was 75 in 280 at bats. I do think most catchers struggle at the plate to start. Not saying Dingler will ever hit. But 84 at bats while catching 5-7 pitchers a game in a race for the playoffs is a tough entrance into becoming a MLB batter imho -
2024 - 2025 Detroit Tigers Offseason

AJ and others spoke often to the fact that finding one's way as a catcher at the major league level involves much more initial focus on catching than it does on hitting. I think Dingler will likely be fine, give him time. They already have Rogers, who seems to be a solid part of what Harris et all are building. -
2024 DETROIT TIGERS POST SEASON THREAD
papalawrence replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
Saw today that with the 5 spot from Skubal his post season era ended at 2.37. Regular season 2.39. Playing against the best teams, he was going to give up runs at some point. I'm just now starting to get over the loss. Just don't want the Yankees or Dodgers to win -
Week Six: Detroit Lions (3-1) @ Dallas Cowboys (3-2)

I started to watch and stopped. I tore my acl and meniscus on the same play in 1983. I still cannot watch a leg injury replay -
American League Division Series Game #5 (2-2) 1:08PM 10/12/24
papalawrence replied to Tigeraholic1's topic in Game Threads
When was the last time a team made the ALCS without a player with at least 25 home runs? And only one player with 20+? 3 players with 15+? Some of this great run was indeed magical. Out of 15 AL teams Det was 10th in BA, 9th in HR, 14th in OBP and somehow got to 9th in Runs. Much of this run was the bullpen and Skubal, which should remain a strength for a few years. Please sign Skubal. And bring in a couple bats. Without that it will be difficult to replicate '24 or improve. That said, I am very excited for this team. What a fun 2 months!! Meadows could be emerging as a star. If Carp and Greene stay healthy for a full year those team stats will improve. I think Tork will be on a shorter leash. You can't have negative production from 1B. I actually have an odd hunch he will have a nice year next year. Enjoying a stogie right now. Thankful for the system that Harris seems to be building. Positive years are upon us -

American League Division Series Game #4 (2-1) 6:08PM 10/10/24
papalawrence replied to Tigeraholic1's topic in Game Threads
Like the announcers said, both bullpen are likely getting a bit taxed. If they lose Carp that's huge. Can't wait for Saturday -
They're all slow. People used to make fun of Rusty back in the day. Heckuva player. Just really slow. Right now Stanton is slower

Bummed that all of these games have been during my work hours. Should be able to see the last couple innings -
At this point Giancarlo Stanton is slower than Rusty Staub was (RIP)

For every positive huge free agent signing in MLB, there seems to be at least 2 awful contracts. Look at Detroit's history - Zimmermann, Baez. Upton was so-so. Look at the Angels history. So many bad signings I want Det to add 2 bats as much as anyone, but Alonso's ops dropped below 800. I think Harris stays the course with some mid tier signings and to continue replenishing from the farm. Det is building an identity - versatility, aggressive on the base paths, solid defense, lots of pitching. Control the strike zone (but their obp was 29th in MLB).

2024 DETROIT TIGERS POST SEASON THREAD
papalawrence replied to Motor City Sonics's topic in Detroit Tigers
I miss Howard. He added a lot of flavor -
Whether Baltimore or Houston it's going to be tough, but Det should be ready. Would have been tough to beat Baltimore 3 straight series in 3 week period. And Houston starting rotation has been very good. Time to enjoy and see what happens. Guessing it's Skubal, Olson, kitchen sink. Regardless this is outstanding experience for the young crew.

Chicago pitched well. Hangover game. I didn't drink, but feel a little hungover myself
-
Very nice compilation of the past 2 month run
-
After the trade deadline passed I believe Det was in line for a top 6 pick in the draft. I confess I thought things would go in an opposite direction than they did. The past decade clouded my lens. Incredible time to be a Tigers fan!
-
The Tigers just took 8 of 9 (6 on the road) vs the Orioles, Royals and Rays. All with post season on the line. Crazy indeed!
-
Like the 2003 Tigers, they don't want to get to 121 losses.
-
The White Sox are closing out the year like the 2003 Tigers did. They don't want to set the record for losses. Still holding at 120 and they're beating the Angels today 5-0. The Tigers need to expect them to play hard during this final series, which I'm sure they will do

Yes, so tragic. I still feel bad about Aurelio
