Not sure I'd call it "finding something".  Seems that it's something that should have been dealt with when he was pulled over in Tennessee with a full sized SUV packed full of migrants.   They also say they have the dude who hired Garcia to smuggle people so it seems on the surface that they have a strong case.

I'm not a lawyer, but their public comments about him leading up to this point are going to be a real issue for prosecuting him IMO

Bondi was using the press conference to make accusations that aren't in the indictments.  I'm sure Garcia's attorney is going to have a field day with that.

Coincidentally, apropos of not this, I started rewatching Bridge of Spies, in which Tom Hanks plays a lawyer defending the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, in which the US decided they needed to look like he was getting due process as part of their ideological war with the Soviets, but everybody up and down the chain just wanted it to be a pretext to railroad the spy without any real effort to defend him—all except Tom hanks, of course.

While listening to the Hanks character wax poetic about how American justice was designed to be afforded to anyone regardless of background or citizenship, I kept thinking, man, that just sounds so naive these days.

Finally. Of course they had to find something to change him with now. But at least he will be getting due process.

It's just an attempt by Trumo to distract for his lovers quarrel with Elon. It could have been much worse, I was wondering what kinda stunt he would pull.

The indictment happened two weeks ago...

Well you explain then why they didn't announce this back on May 21st?

Because the federal government keeps indictments sealed on a fairly regular basis? Specifically with respect to high profile defendants?

To be clear, I was responding to the idea that they cooked this up today to specifically deflect on the whole Trump/Musk chaos. That clearly isn't what happened here, plus this administration (reactionary as they are) are not nearly as strategic in their actions as MAGA and some anti-MAGA think they are.

Well they knew the court had ordered him repatriated  - I would assume they wanted the indictment in hand for when that ultimately happened. With a Trump admin there is always some sideshow going that a distraction is useful for, and there is also some distraction they are cooking up because the next sideshow is envitable. So nothing here is actually out of the ordinary.  🙄

No argument there... But where I differ is that there is no strategy here, this is just an administration that breaks a lot of laws and does exponentially more corrupt acts than any other. It's not exactly surprising when you get a new story every single day

Indictments are typically sealed so that the person being accused isn't aware they're about to be arrested.  Kind of a moot point in this case.   They could have announced this the day the grand jury came back with their decision and they chose not to for no good reason.   Given the publicity of this case and the heat they had been taking, the logical thing would have been to announce it as soon as they knew he would be coming back to face trial.  Obviously there was never a question as to whether or not El Salvador would return him.

I can see the PR angle for the admin though. "Well see, you may have him back but NOW we're going to charge him - Ha Ha!" etc

I'm surprised they didn't keep quiet about the indictments, fly him back and then slap the cuffs on him at the airport in front of all the media coverage.

There doesn’t have to be an actual strategy for this to be a purposeful distraction. A reaction in the moment is good enough to serve the same purpose.

the first step in straightening out this society will be to start sending people, maybe a lot of people, and especially official people, to jail for perjury. So far we are still going in the wrong direction. More and more official lying, less and less accountability.

Taking everything else out of the equation, does anyone actually believe that Abrgeo Garcia wasn't smuggling people into the country?  Even if you only take the one trip we know about, there's absolutely no way you make a trip down to Texas, pick up 8 guys for your boss and bring them halfway across the country without knowing what's going on.
