Bush? The shoe guy? Of course AI was confused by the two Bush names and conflated incidents that happened to H.W. Bush when i searched. There was a 2005 incident in Tblisi Georgia and incident post White House involving ISIS. And of course the shoe guy. Edited June 17 by romad1 1 Quote

Gill is just another Know Nothing with faux Christian beliefs I had one of the AI agents look up any reference to Bonhoeffer in modern right wing rhetoric as being a threat to their goals and this is what it came up with. The interesting thing is that they’d been holding him up as a right-wing hero fighting Democrat politics as being akin to Nazi rule—now this guy is holding him up as a threat to themselves: Yes — there are several documented examples of Bonhoeffer being used in modern right-wing rhetoric, especially by Christian nationalist and MAGA-aligned figures, as a warning about supposedly dangerous left/liberal rule or as a model for resistance to current political opponents. The clearest recent example is Rep. Brandon Gill’s remark that Democrats should “tone down the rhetoric” or they’ll create another Dietrich Bonhoeffer, which framed Bonhoeffer as a cautionary figure in today’s partisan conflict.[1] ## Other examples - Eric Metaxas has repeatedly used Bonhoeffer as a rallying symbol for conservative Christian activism, with coverage noting that he cast current politics as a “Bonhoeffer moment” and urged Christians to oppose Democrats as if facing a Nazi-like threat.[2][3] - A 2024 Religion News Service analysis said that on the religious right, activists had turned Bonhoeffer into a “political avatar,” with some portraying Democratic governance as a “Fourth Reich” scenario.[4] - Coverage of the Alabama showings of Metaxas’s *Letter to the American Church* said the film explicitly invoked Bonhoeffer to argue that churches must act against the political left, and that descendants and scholars condemned this as misuse by right-wing extremists and Christian nationalists.[5] - A 2024 statement from Bonhoeffer scholars and family members said his legacy was being invoked “on behalf of Christian nationalism,” and specifically warned that this was a dangerous distortion of his life and theology.[3][2] - Outside the U.S., a 2025 study found far-right groups in South Korea citing Bonhoeffer’s “You can’t let madman drive the wheel” at political rallies while comparing a progressive government to Hitler’s regime.[6] ## How to read this pattern The common thread is that Bonhoeffer is being used less as a historical theologian and more as a **symbol** for righteous resistance, with right-wing actors casting contemporary opponents as authoritarian or Nazi-like threats. That makes him especially useful in rhetoric that tries to justify emergency politics, cultural panic, or even political violence by claiming the present resembles the 1930s.[2][3][4][5] ## Best documented U.S. cases If you want the strongest U.S. examples beyond Gill, the most documented ones are Eric Metaxas, the *Letter to the American Church* / Project 2025 ecosystem, and the Bonhoeffer family and scholars’ public rebukes of that appropriation. Those sources collectively show a recurring pattern: Bonhoeffer invoked as a warning against Democrats, liberal Christians, or the “left,” rather than as a figure narrowly tied to the historical anti-Nazi resistance.[3][4][5][2] Would you like a compact list of named people, groups, and exact quotes? Yes, once you shatter the norms...the norms are no longer a barrier to anyone but the eccentric types who still adhere to them in the face of it being insanely against their self-interests. Maybe the Norms (say Victorian sexual mores) are not really necessary, but people should definitely not have relations with electric sockets even if there is no rule that says you shouldn't. Quote
