Since this weekend is “rivalry weekend”

Do you consider Toronto our rivals?

Personally I don’t think geographic location is the only thing that makes a rival.  I consider our two chief rivals to be the Guardians and the Twins.

But instead they have the Guardians and Reds playing because they’re both in Ohio—even though they went many decades without really playing each other.

I thought we were signed Pittsburgh as our “rival.”

They certainly were.   One of the better rivalries.

I was hoping that for the Toronto series I could watch the Toronto TV feed and listen to Dan on the radio, but you can only listen to the specific radio feed for the TV feed you’re watching on MLB.tv. Watching the Blue Jays feed it was so nice not being subjected to all the idiot gambling BS.

It’s a cheap solution, but you could pull up the Tigers radio feed on your phone and sync it to the Blue Jays video. It’s not very bespoke but that’s what I’m probably going to do.

Yeah but it cooled off a lot once we left the AL East.  I have no real emotions towards the Jays beyond laughing at their GM incompetence.

It's the IP era and everything is buffered to some random unpredictable degree. Even the over the air radio is not a reliable 7 seconds any more because the audio gets to the transmitter by IP and can/does get buffered on the way there. Often the gameday cartoon is the most *live* thing I get. So for instance, the other night, the over the air radio was about 15 seconds behind gameday and my Direct TV was another 20 or so seconds behind the radio. So at least 35 seconds from fact to video - maybe more as I have no way of knowing how far behind gameday might be.  If I try to run gameday audio vs the Direct TV video, the Audio is usually, but not *allways* ahead. The buffering on Direct TV makes no sense at all. I sometimes start watching the recording of a game in progress, excising the commercials to eventually catch up. When I get to 'real time' on the recording I might jump back the the 'direct' program, and it will say 'live' but pick up 30 sec behind where the recording in progress already had been! Makes no sense at all, ever.

I don't even have a way of checking the broadcast against live at the ballpark as I don't have portable FM radio anymore! When the games were on 'JR we always had a pocket AM radio on hand to get Ernie's explanations of anything odd that happened on he field.

It's an off day, so enjoy this fun video about the 1984 Padres. I didn't know how crazy that team was.

That came across my feed last night. Crazy. I knew about Show.

Since my memory is stuck in 1984, I remembered most of that stuff.  I'd buy the book if he wrote it.  Show wasn't the only John Bircher on that team.  They also had Mark Thurmond and Dave Dravecky.  Can you imagine that team in the age of Twitter? It would probably suck, because instead of it being a team of characters, everyone would hate them.

I knew Dravecky was very religious but the political thing was new. There was a moving story about Shows last days. A sad reminder about addiction.

Pardon my randomness,  Both the Cubs and the Tigers have been in the World Series 11 times and they played each other 4 times.  There is a decent possibility it could be 12 and 5 this year.

Does 'promotion' money have to be adding in as it accrues or do team's get a pass on that - i.e. for each day Montero spends with the Tigers he's getting the major league min instead of the AAA min?

In the 80s the Jays were our rivals.  Not so much now, however

The last two weeks of 1987.   Wow.    Just wow.    I went to all 3 games the final weekend.

Do you realize that in those last two weekends they played 7 games.  The Jays won the first three and the Tigers won the last four and they were all 1-run games....all 7.    Had Bleacher Seats for all 3 of those last games and couldn't even see Herndon's HR in the clincher, just went by the crowd reaction.

I’m not sure the extent that creating the “rivalry weekend” for marketing purposes increases attendance/viewership relative to the same series against the same team on a non-promoted weekend.

That said, anecdotally speaking, weekend games against the Jays seem to have a lot of folks in blue hats walking around the stadium. So it seems appropriate to me.

Division/competitive rivals are a different story and don’t really fit with the theme of the weekend.

Tigers and Guardindians were never really rivals because they never fought each other closely for a pennant, or if they did, it was 100 years ago and not recently. Now that they had the playoff series last night, that should goose the rivalry by a good deal starting next week. And I'm gonna be there for Friday's game!

It's all about the Pirates.  The Tigers can lose every series for the rest of the long.  As long as they beat Pittsburgh, that's all that matters.  We are going to kick some Pirate ass next month.  I hate those bastards.  Never forget 1909!

The Jays are as good as any for a rival.  You have the history of 1987 plus those years in the early 90s when their fans would invade Tiger Stadium and take over.  Hotels in Dearborn were full of Jays fans when they were here on the weekends, I know because I was delivering pizzas to them.  Pissed me off.

Otherwise you have to just let the thing grow organically.  You can't force it.

Yes, Montero (for example) is on a split salary, and I assume (erroneously, but I have to draw the line somewhere) that the roster stays as is the rest of the year. I also don't have an exact amount for the medical benefits piece, or the cash deals (Faedo, Horn, Hicklen all were involved in undisclosed cash deals). To better answer your question though, Montero gets major league prorated split money ($736,700) days he is in the majors, minor league split ($201,770) in the minors.

how does Hicklen (a few days) out earn Kreidler (a few weeks)?

is Nido's salary that high because he is a 5 year vet, or did he get some ML roster bonus?
