Speaking of late season doubleheaders, I saw that the Braves and Nationals are playing two today, and I immediately thought, what a huge bummer it must be for players on two teams that are already eliminated from contention to have to play two meaningless games in one day at the end of the season. But then I saw the standings and realized that the 67-83 Braves are still technically in contention for a wild card spot.

End of the season stats can help.  Look at Matt Olson, 14 for 28 with 5 HRs.

Not the only or even primary reason for the slide, but Trey Sweeney has a wrc+ of 3 in the 2nd half of the year. That is lowest in all of MLB. He has the lowest full year WAR of any shortstop (one of only 2 negative WAR players with more than 200 abs). How is he even on the roster?

Because there's nobody else in the system we can easily replace Sweeney with?

TBF, Sweeney has started only 17 games and had a mere 67 plate trips in the entire second half, so it's not as though it's going unnoticed.

Sewald might surprise.  He was a solid late inning reliever from 2021- mid 2024.  He had some rough stretches in the second half of 2024 and was injured this year.  He's a risk, but he's got enough of a track record to think he could put together a good run through the end of the regular season and beyond if he's healthy.

Besides the obvious that has been litigated to death, Correa, Kim, IFK, etc all moved teams. There were options.

I suspect  Heuer was injured but wasn't logged in the Toledo transactions as several transactions haven't been. Can't outright an injured player, so released it is. Not sure they turn around and pick him back up, since free agency looks anyways.

I suppose we could start by demoting him and going full McKinsey/Baez platoon. Are you saying no other options at all? Would you want Sweeney on a playoff roster?

I don’t think Sweeney is going to be on the playoff roster.

But then, if we don’t start winning again soon, ain’t no one on this team gonna be on a playoff roster.

I'd rather have some quiet guys start hitting.

The players are ready for the season to be done.  One guy on the roster has any passion and he only pitches every 5 days.

That's ridiculous.  You could say they are pressing, but nobody wants the season to be done.

If this team is going to have a leader it's going to have to be either Torkelson or Dingler that grows into it, and a catcher probably has too much on his plate to pay a lot of attention to what all the rest of his mates are doing.

Teams always look like they aren't trying when they aren't doing well. Why would they suddenly stop trying now?  It makes no sense.

A more pronounced upper-cut swing, that's what.   Leads to more HRs, but also to a lot more strikeouts.
