Skubal will be pitching for Detroit in 2026 for many reasons so let's enjoy that. It's not the same as Ohtani because the Angels were not in the playoffs the preceding two years like we were. Nor were they playing in a weak division. Plus it's always easier to push off hard decisions to a later date. Maybe the new collective bargaining agreement will bail them out in some manner. Harris is probably relieved to pass the hot tamale over to Chris.

I give Harris credit for bringing the organization to a much better place.  I don't know if they are the elite cutting edge organization some are making them out to be, but they have at least caught up to some of the more analytical organiztions.    I don't really give Avila much credit.  I just don't think that Harris has done anything extraordinary at the MLB level yet.   I will give Harris full credit when he wins with the team totally crafted by him.

I guess I see what you mean. I mean, sure Avila did put losers on the field for a bunch of years running, but it's already been three years and Harris hasn't put a winner on the field with this team y ... wait ... uhh ... I mean, he hasn't led this team to the playoffs or anyt ... errr ... I guess what I mean is, we haven't actually won any playoff ser ...

Maybe I don't really see what you mean after all.

Wow, are you still comparing Avila to Harris? I thought that dog died 4 pages ago. Avila's teams did a lot of losing, so he had a lot of early picks. Many of those players are ones who led Detroit to the playoffs the last 2 seasons. Harris has done a good job restocking the talent in our minor leagues and putting in place much better player development. I'm really not sure how you don't understand that.

Mistaking correlation for causation.

If I had equated my wearing my lucky Tigers hat every game with their going to the playoffs, I would agree I'd mistaken correlation for causation.

Since Harris came in, made a bunch of changes to the roster, training, development, and infrastructure, and the Tigers started winning after six straight losing seasons under the former guy, I think it is reasonable to conclude that Harris's efforts were at least a substantial, if not the complete, cause of that winning.

Can I prove as much with a mathematical formula? No, I cannot. If that's the minimum standard being established, then I have to admit to falling short on that standard.

I don't really give credit to either Avila or Harris for anything extraordinary.  Hinch has been fantastic though and that's coming from someone who usually says mangers don't matter.  Also Skubal.

The last 2 season, the Tigers are a .500 club in non-Skubal starts. So go ahead and trade him, maybe we'll find another Cy Young Aeard winning pitcher...in 20 years. /s

Incomprehensible.

Boras would never allow Skubal to sign for 6 years. 8 years maybe?

he will if the new cba eliminates contracts longer than 6 years.

unpopular opinon:  "super teams" like the dodgers drive interest in baseball.  it attracts new fans who like winners and it creates an enemy for everyone else to root against.

unpopular opinion #2: baseball does not need a salary cap or any further restraints on salary.  there are already a tremendous amount of devices in place to hold down salary and force players to work for much less than thrir market value.  a team can draft a player and pay them a "slot" of predetermined money, then put them in the minors for a period of time, and then have them at up to (in most cases) 6 years below market value.  years that can coincide with their peak production years.  and then they can trade them for more underpaid assets.

baseball's current structure is very "owner friendly."  all owners.  including the owners of the pittsburgh pirates, milwaukee brewers, and tampa bay rays.  the difference is that two of those teams have (or, have had) competent management and the other is pittsburgh.
