They don't need SP at all. In the playoffs, teams usually shorten to a four man rotation. The Tigers can cover two spots in the bullpen internally. They need one or two top notch relievers. I don't think they need to add to the lineup, since they don't have anyone to take away from.

Which means...

The only SP help we should be looking for, if any, would have to be better than Mize-Montero-Olson-Flaherty... because we already have those guys and the rotation gets shortened in the playoffs anyways, as you've noted.

We don't "NEED" SP help...

But if the rare opportunity to add a true #2 starter were available, and at a cost that Harris approved... I would not be averse to adding that person. Because the above 4 are pitching like 3/4/5 starters (inconsistent, not reliably dominant, IMO).

I don't know that anyone fitting that description is available anyways, so moot point.

I'm just sayin'...

if healthy, this rotation is 6 deep and fine through the rest of the year:

Skubal, Flaherty, Mize, Olson, Montero, SGL - they also have Melton who may join BP

the relievers are not so good:

Vest, Kahnle, Holton are only guys you would want in to see in a close playoff game.

Hanifee and Lee might make playoff roster by default.

If the rotation is shortened to 3 or 4 in the playoffs, then Montero and SGL could be moved to the bullpen displacing folks like Hanifee and Lee. Does that give make us feel at all better about the bullpen? Does that affect who/how many relievers we try to add at the deadline?

Hard disagree on SGL not being a swing and miss guy. The k's weren't there this year in his time back, but down the stretch in 2023, his K rate and Stuff Metrics were bonkers off the chart.

Getting a better starter allows us to move a current one to the pen.  I think Flaherty would hate it, but he’d be very good in 1-2 innings

I would like to see them get Lugo.  I would have more faith in him as a #2 starter in the playoffs than anyone else they have.  The need for a top reliever or two goes without saying.

happy to be proven wrong; but seems to be that was an aberration, not the baseline

The only current SP I'd trust with a high leverage role would be Skubal.   Call me crazy, but I'm thinking that wouldn't be a good move.

This is my POV.

I want higher leverage pitchers for higher leverage playoff and WS innings. If we can get that far.

I have no idea how cheaply we can get them or even if we can... They're not going to be cheap, but at a price that Harris feels he can work with...

On the MLB app they’re acting like the “swing off“ is something to be so proud of that it’s worth reliving. I’ve gone to demolition derbys but it’s not something I brag about and need to relive. Come to think of it, though, a demolition derby is better than the “swing off.” There’s a brute honesty to a demolition derby. It doesn’t pretend to be more than it is.
