Money. They are up against the tax threshold so they may trade Cease (who is a FA this year) and Suarez due to their current salaries. To be able to bring in other salaries of equal value for positions of need.

AJ Preller is the Angel Hernandez of GM’s.    I guess he learned nothing from the Soto trade.

Like Dombrowski the Padres have never been shy about trading premium prospects for proven vets so seeing them give up a top 5 overall prospect certainly isn't surprising.

Yes, I would keep an eye on Suarez for the Padres and Doval from SF. I honestly don't think it would cost too much to get either.

SD trades #3 overall prospect De Vries (+ 3 more) to get Miller and Sears. So it would have had to have been Clark or McGonigle going  out if Harris wanted Miller.

They had some oddly backloaded deals the last two years. So yeah, there is some chicken coming home to roost here, even if CBT is based on AAV. There are some cash flow issues they are working around.

The impact bats certainly don't seem to be there (outside of Suarez, but that ship has sailed), which is unfortunate. We certainly could use one. That and an elite BP arm is what we needed IMO. I'm not all that thrilled about the third/fourth starters that are available (which is what I consider Alcantara at this point), or these donkey relievers we keep signing/trading for.

I say go for Keller since he’s under control for several years, and with Jobe/Olson out for the year and Flaherty being hit or miss—I’d like the ML experience depth there.  Hopefully Melton can build off that last start and Paddack can be consistent, but we need a #3 guy right now.  There’s no more help coming in the system and going into the playoffs with Skub/Mize/Flaherty/Paddack isn’t super ideal.
