He clearly has some ability. The Tigers would not have brought him up last year and back and forth this year if they felt he does not - and he did contribute to the team during the stretch plus. This year, like many players during their sophomore season, the league adjusted and he has to back. Not saying he will be a 'star' but he does have ability, was a first round pick and he can have his moments. The team has won games with him at short and right now Trey playing short and Javy in CF might be their best D. As Chasfh mentioned earlier Rainer is most likely the SS of the future, but for now having a decent+ SS, LH bat, good speed and someone who fits with the team is not all bad. CMRivdogs Posted Tuesday at 01:52 PM Posted Tuesday at 01:52 PM It's time to again post my favorite Danny Murtaugh quote Quote "Why certainly I'd like to have a fellow who hits a home run every time at bat, who strikes out every opposing batter when he's pitching and who is always thinking about two innings ahead. The only trouble is to get him to put down his cup of beer, come down out of the stands, and do those things," 2 1 Quote

Sweeney has not hit this year and is a below average defensive shortstop. I do think he has some ability, but he has not been good this year. I guess they can see if he works things out since they have a big lead, but I hope they have a better arrangement for the playoffs (meaning Baez at SS and healthy outfielders). . Quote

I'd like to see a metric on Sweeney that measured the overall time from the ball hitting his glove to the ball getting to the 1st baseman. He must be saving a lot of time somewhere - like getting his throws off really quickly, otherwise there is no way he'd be playing SS with his average throwing velocity. Guys do not beat out a lot of ground balls against him so he is compensating somewhere. Sort of reminds me of the mystery of how Peralta never seemed to be able to move very far yet never had bad range ratings. Edited Tuesday at 03:23 PM by gehringer_2 Quote

A lot still think he has good power potential. Like 20+ a year. How many infielders start off light hitters here go on to become slugger elsewhere. Quote
lordstanley Posted Tuesday at 03:27 PM Posted Tuesday at 03:27 PM (edited) Sweeney was rated the Dodgers’ #22 prospect by Baseball America or #28 by MLB Pipeline at the time he was acquired with Liranzo. Given that, playing 130 MLB games like he already has for the Tigers is more than I would have expected for his entire career. Edited Tuesday at 03:27 PM by lordstanley 1 Quote

IIRC, at some point it was reported that Sweeney had the highest or nearly highest bat speed on the team. That's probably not a good thing in his case. There is a trade-off between bat speed and control and I think you can be too far on either side. Baddoo is another guy with a wicked fast bat but he can't hit enough of anything either. But he's got a decent profile for a bench guy - occasional power a pitcher has to respect, doesn't make a lot of mistakes, runs well, is LH. He is 25 now so coming into his peak batting years. He doesn't have to get a lot better to be able to eke out a 3 or 4 year career as a backup SS. I'm sure the Tigers wish they had a better #2 SS, but right now they don't. Yet, I factually point out that Sweeney has 2 multi-hit games in his last 55 games and suggest that someone barely hitting .200 doesn't belong on a contending team's major league roster, and I'm somehow a "troll"? Sure thing champ. Quote
