After the 35-5 start, the 1984 team went 22-23.

Then they went 11-1.

Then they followed that up by going 20-21.

So, two different stretches lasting more than 40 games of the most magic team of all our lifetimes playing sub-.500 ball.

It’s what all baseball teams do: they have long funks during long seasons, and then they win rings by getting hot at just the right time.

Enjoy the ride!

I can’t believe it’s mid September.

Last week I had a monthly meeting with a higher up.  He asked if I watched any football over the weekend.  I reminded him it’s still baseball season.  I think he understand me more now.

Cleveland up 6-0 in the nightcap today. Lead will be 1 game. Final 3 on the road vs Boston, where they'll likely need to win 2 or 3.

At this point it's not only possible that the Tigers miss the playoffs, I'd say it's probable.

Only hope might be Astros losing out.

On the morning of September 11 the Tigers had a 9.5 game lead with 16 games to play. By the evening of September 20, the Tigers have a 1.0 game lead with 7 games to play. By my count, starting Thursday September 11 through the end of today, there will have been 16 games that have impacted the division race and 15 have gone against the Tigers. Only exception is in bold.

Thursday September 11

Cleveland beats KC

Detroit loses to NY Yankees

Friday September 12

Cleveland beats Chicago White Sox

Detroit loses to Miami

Saturday September 13

Cleveland beats Chicago White Sox

Detroit loses to Miami

Sunday September 14

Cleveland beats Chicago White Sox

Detroit beats Miami

Tuesday September 16

Cleveland beats Detroit

Wednesday September 17

Cleveland beats Detroit

Thursday September 18

Cleveland beats Detroit

Friday September 19

Detroit loses to Atlanta

Cleveland beats Minnesota

Saturday September 20

Detroit loses to Atlanta

Cleveland beats Minnesota

While the Tigers’ magic number to win the division is stuck at 6, the magic number to clinch a playoff spot has dropped to 4 with Houston’s loss tonight to Athletics. Houston has to play 2 games better than the Tigers over the final 5 games. The Tigers could actually lose out (possible) and still make the playoffs if Houston goes no better than 1-4 in remaining road games vs Athletics and the Angels.
