Mr. McKitrick, after very careful consideration I've come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks.

Thank you for stepping into the breach.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.  Or close the wall up with our Tiger dead.

In the regular season there's nothing so becomes a man  as modest stillness and humility

But when the blast of playoffs blows in our ears

Then imitate the action of the Tigers

Stiffen the sinews..........SUMMON UP THE BLOOD

Disguise fair nature with hard-favoured rage

I feel like I’m playing with House money, but I would still really like to win this series. If Skubal can win two games and Mize can win one then we’ve got it. But the Tigers have to score runs.

If they’ll only score a couple runs each game, I don’t see how this can turn out well.

They were only 3 games better than the Tigers

I don’t think it’s fair or reasonable to go into this with a “win both Skubal starts and steal another” strategy.

I won’t argue that it may be the most realistic path, but it’s exactly what they did (and what failed) last year with Cleveland. All went to plan until they got into game five and the Guardians finally got to Skubal. The man can’t possibly just strike out 14 and throw 7 shutout innings every start.

Baseball isn’t a one-man game. If it was the Angels would have been fantastic the last 5-10 years. Go out and win game one, let Skubal do his thing Sunday, and win one at home. Skubal can start the ALCS.

Feels like the Mariners’ monkey on their back shouldn’t be overlooked either. They haven’t won a game in the ALDS or beyond in 24 years.

Might mean nothing to their roster of guys who were children then, but it does mean that they lack postseason experience. Postseason baseball is so different than the previous 162.

I feel if Melton is starting, the Tigers are just giving up hoping to win game 1.  Hoping he only goes an inning or two

Funny, his postseason era is 108.00 and his whip is 12.00

That's very misleading. The Tigers were 6 games up on them on August 2nd. So they caught us and ended up 3 games better. Since August 2nd, they're 9 games better than us.

Skubal is 3-2 in five career starts vs. Seattle, with both of those losses having come this season. So he’s due for a rebound… 🤞

Split in Seattle and win 2 games here. Series win! 😅

The Guardians were 10.5 games better than the Tigers the final 2 1/2 weeks of the regular season and the Tigers sent them home for the season.

Oh, I wasn't implying Seattle was better than us, just that they only caught up and passed us when we were on a losing streak. I'm really hoping the Tigers found their stroke, like we did the first 100 games or so. That team was playing like actual World Champions..

I'm actually feeling pretty relaxed, at least we got to the ALDS and maybe have shaken off the season-ending slump. Imagine if the Tigers had had a normal finish (8-8 instead of 3-13) and got the #2 seed. They'd still be facing Seattle, there would be the concern of rust vs rest, Skubal would be burned in home games instead of giving us a good chance in road games, the Mariners would have the same fearsome lineup, etc. There'd be the risk that a very nice regular season would end in getting knocked out in the Tigers' first playoff round. Or imagine further that the Tigers had turned it on a bit at the finish (11-5 instead of 3-13) and got the #1 seed. They'd be facing the Yankees with its 8 or so hitters with 20+ home runs. The Tigers likely still would have been considered underdogs by most and there'd be the risk that a dream regular season as top team in the AL would end in getting knocked out in the Tigers' first playoff round.

Melton threw 16 inning in Sept with 10 BB and 11K, His ERA wasn't bad but those are bad peripherals.. IMO Montero pitched better than that,  but  he has thrown to 15 Mariners this season and given up a 1.042 OPS, so that's probably why we are seeing Melton.

Not sure that is how I would judge it. You can have all the stats you want but some human is still deciding which ones to pay attention to based on his gut.

I haven't seen all his outings so maybe it's just a skewed sample but I haven't been impressed with Melton.

I suppose against a team that's had a few days off it might take once through the order to catch up to Melton's velo, and once through the order may be all they are looking for.

I mean.............  Alex Cobb

I gotta tell ya.  A lost season like this and NOW they put him on the roster.   Starting game 1?      Gutsy move by Harri..........oh, wait, they're starting a rookie?      Okay.

Does he give us a Porcello vs. the Twins in Game 163 performance?    5 2/3rds,  4 hits, 2 BB with 8 K and only 1 earned run.
