buddha Posted October 23 Posted October 23 i hope for chauncey's sake he was working FOR the mob when he was rigging these poker games and not ripping them off... otoh, i wonder if he was in debt to them in some way? maybe from gambling on basketball games? hmmm.... Quote
buddha Posted October 23 Posted October 23 it is funny how drose gets raked over the coals for getting accused of rape, denying it, and then going to trial and getting acquitted while chauncey pays off his accuser and no one ever brings it up. 1 Quote

It’s like the first and second apron. You’ve got to be a pretty big NBA fan to know the details about it. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted October 23 Posted October 23 The Billups thing happened in the 90’s before social media. He was then a bust and journeyman and not a star so it didn’t grab attention. Quote

The second thing is what I was thinking, that maybe he was working something off. These athletes are so competitive that when they can't play their sports anymore a lot of them turn to gambling. And most of them lose millions. We all suspect it had something to do with MJ's ridiculous baseball career. He had to go away for awhile. Some people think his father's death was no accident. This is nothing new, it's just much more widespread now. What was the Denny McLain rumor - that A- he owed the mob but they were smart enough not to break his arm, so they broke his toe as a warning (remember he did miss time in 1970 for a foot injury) and they he actually recorded that organ album as a way to make money to pay off the mob. Knowing what we do about Denny, I 100% believe that. Edited October 23 by Motor City Sonics Quote

Have you watched many games at sports bars the last few years? some folks freak out (because they bet foolish amounts of money). I took advantage of hockey 5.5 over/unders a couple seasons ago and did quite well until they caught on and started raising things to 6.5. But I only bet $10 at a time. I went a little crazy once and bet a whole $50 on an NFL 5-game playoff parlay - and it hit (every 10 minutes they were giving me buyout options too). Cleaned up. But I haven't done that the last couple of years - it was just taking away from the enjoyment. Quote

It was just about the time they made smoking illegal in bars (in Michigan.) Legal gambling and legal marijuana makes me wonder what's next, legal prostitution? Yeah, I know, take it to the political forum. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted October 23 Posted October 23 I don't generally traffic in conspiracy theories, sports, politics, or otherwise. Occasionally, one pops up that I do believe if there becomes some amount of reasonable evidence to support the theory. One basketball-related conspiracy I believe is that Chris Webber intentionally threw the NCAA Title Game against North Carolina to do a favor for his bookie and handler Ed Martin. I think Webber intentionally tried to travel and then call a timeout when Michigan had none because someone (Martin) had money riding on the game. Money makes the world go round. Quote

Motor City Sonics Posted October 23 Posted October 23 Wow. The retired number needs to come down. Not saying un-retire the number for now, but it's gotta come down Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups was arrested by the FBI on Thursday in connection with an illegal poker game tied to the Mafia. That news may have come as a shock to many, as Billups' name wasn't mentioned in previous reports, but it didn't surprise professional gambler Matthew Berkey, who called out Billups' rigged poker game on a podcast in 2023. Berkey's comments — which have now resurfaced following Billups' arrest — came during a May 2023 episode of the "Only Friends" podcast. After Berkey describes the game — which he said may have started in 2019 in Los Angeles — he noted that this particular game was "all built around Chauncey Billups." Berkey said the person who told him about the game claimed it was "100 percent on the up and up," but Berkey — who knew some of the people involved in the game — was skeptical of that claim. He ultimately decided to not take part in the game, likely saving himself a lot of money based on Thursday's indictments. Berkey, however, did speak to some friends who played in the game multiple times. After hearing their stories, Berkey said the game was "for sure confirmed to be cheated." As Berkey explained, people who did not understand how to play Texas hold 'em would go in with suboptimal hands and then get the exact cards they needed. "Only the pros were losing," Berkey said before adding, "They got absolutely filleted." Quote
Deleterious Posted October 23 Author Posted October 23 A bit shocked Billups isn't being charged for this. Co-Conspirator 8 was an NBA player from approximately 1997through 2014, and an NBA coach since at least 2021 Clearly that is Billups. He played from the 1997-98 season to 2013-14. Quote B. Prior to the game, the Trail Blazers’ record was 32-40and the team was out of playoff contention with only 10 games remaining inthe season. Priorto the March 24 Game, Co-Conspirator 8 told the defendant ERIC EARNEST that the TrailBlazers were going to be tanking (i. intentionally losing) to increase their odds ofgetting abetter draft pick in the upcoming NBA draft. Co-Conspirator 8 told EARNEST, before thenews was publicly announced, that several of the Trail Blazers’ best players, including Player I,an individual whose identity is known to the Grand Jury, would not be playing in the March 24Game. The information that the Trail Blazers would be tanking and not playing Player | wasnot available to the public, including the Betting Companies.45. Prior to the March 24 Game, the defendant ERIC EARNEST provided thisnon-public inside information to the defendant MARVES FAIRLEY so that FARLEY couldplace fraudulent wagers on the game and share the profits with EARNEST. In exchange,FAIRLEY ultimately promised to pay EARNEST at least $5,000 if the bets against the Trail Blazers were successful. In addition, FAIRLEY texted EARNEST a screenshot of a purported 520,000 wire transfer from FAIRLEY’s bank account to EARNEST, accompanied by themessage “Address for wire.”46. After the defendant MARVES FAIRLEY leamed from the defendantERIC EARNEST that the Trail Blazers planned not to play their best players in the March 24Game, FAIRLEY conveyed that non-public information to Co-Conspirator 1. FAIRLEY andCo-Conspirator 1 agreed to split the profits on successful wagers they could place agains theTrail Blazers.47. Before these key Trail Blazers players were publicly ruled out of theMarch 24 Game, the defendants MARVES FAIRLEY and SHANE HENNEN, themselves andtogether with their co-conspirators including Co-Conspirator 1, placed and caused the placementof multiple bets that the Trail Blazers would lose the March 24 Game totaling more thanapproximately $100,000. The NBA injury reports publicly released at approximately 1:30 p.m. ESTand 2:30 p.m. EST on March 24, 2023 reported that Player | was, respectively, “probable” andthen “questionable”to play in the March 24 Game. At approximately 9:30 p.m. EST on March24, 2023—approximately half an hour before the start of the March 24 Game—the NBAreleased an injury report listing Player 1 and others as “out” for the game. ~The “out” groupincluded the Trail Blazers’ four highest per-game scorers during the 2022-2023 season.
