Thats exactly why I have a problem with Buckner's terminology. Both times, he said "batter challenging the pitch." No, the batter was challenging the call. Which Buckner got wrong, all 6 challenges in that game.

Probably not. But umpires like Buckner are going to be shown up, on TV, for the whole baseball world to see. And once word gets around, more players will challenge every borderline call he makes. His credibility will be shot....

Why does every league need to have a coach's/player's challenge type of thingy.  Just set up sensors in the plate and hook the umpire up with a buzzer.  

Jose Altuve and the cheating Astros already gave the proof of concept that the buzzer stuff can work in real time

I’m watching opening day for the Royals at Kauffman were they have brought in all the outfield fences except center by about 10 feet, so this is going to make a difference this year. 

I’m looking forward to the appearance of the Sasquatch for Vinnie Pasquantino. I’m also missing the row of blonde Stepford wives that used to populate the first row directly behind home plate. So sad. 

And speaking of sad, a lot of the pregame show was dedicated to the moving as well as uncomfortable story of a young woman with ALS who is a lifetime Royals fan, who was a KCPD officer and due to an act of kindness by the Royals spent her last full day as a police officer years ago as the officer on duty in the Royals dugout.

The Pasquatch thing is simple and funny.  Whoever came up with that idea certainly got a side eye at first, and then a few beers later, yeah, sure, let’s try it.

Kudos to the Royals for the pregame show and treating that KCPD to her last full day on duty.

I had completely forgotten about the Pasquach thing. We attended a game last Summer on ourv roadtrip. With the exception of the nasty thunderstorm early in the game, it was a fun experience

Yeah, that's usually a late May/early June thing. Sooner if it's a warm spring.

When the Tigers show up there for Game 3 of the World Series, the ivy will be turning all kinds of colors.

Our old friend and now Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates Don Kelly was tossed yesterday when Reds slugger Eugenio Suarez checked his swing and knew he struck out and was walking back to the dugout while the first base umpire contended he hadn’t. Donnie started chirping from the dugout things like “pay attention to the game!“ And when he stepped out onto the field, he was tossed.

Yep,  with all the ABS overturns and calls like this.............We all thought Angel Hernandez was the worst ump, but I had heard and read plenty of people saying Bucknor is worse. 

 

Is he sick?    To me it looks like he's lost weight, he does not look well.   Maybe he had bulkier padding in the past.   

 

I think Umpires should have to justify their jobs by their performance.  Stop treating them like Supreme Court Justices.
