Stefanik and MAGA would have sent out breathless fund-raising emails if Cuomo won, or anyone won. the GOP called Obama, the most conservative democrat since Truman, a socialist.

I really effing hate that Dems are always on the defensive - what will MAGA do? how will conservative media lie? that is at the core of the old time Dems were/are terrified about his win. stop it. his message is mostly silly, not evil, and he will need to send in the cops the first time Hamas supports riot.

setting up gov't run grocery stores is a bit of a lark; not sure that gets past the powerpoint stage

The politics of Gaza shouldn’t have anything to do with the mayoral race in NYC.  The immigrant population of the city is a heavy majority Caribbean and South American.    They don’t care about it.   The constituents that care are the large Jewish population and they are on the opposing side of the issue from Mamdani.  

He’s taken a personal issue and made a large talking point against his campaign policy.  This is a problem for him that shouldn’t exist.  He’s got to find a way to move completely off Gaza and not make it any issue moving forward.  That’s going to be hard to do since the right will be doing everything they can to keep it on the front page.

abandonment of depressed urban areas by food retailers is a real issue. The left likes to blame this on them being evil, it's mostly because they don't make an money.  I'd much rather see my city address the issue by trying to make my city a better place to do business than with a band-aid like city operated stores but I wouldn't oppose an idea like that if the admin is doing the other needed things as well. Mostly the problem with doing retail in the urban centers is security. Always has been. That's something the left doesn't much like to talk about.

liquor is different, but Virginia and a lot of other states have no problem running one type of grocery store 🙂

Their whole movement is being anti-establishment. They would lose their support if they backed the "establishment." Bernie Sanders, who's been in Washington for 35 years, is somehow not establishment though.

those VA ABC stores are weird aren't they?  Without more evidence I have to think they continue to exists because the NOVA crowd is so damn nerdy and hates that kind of fun.  But, maybe its lip service to the old blue laws. 

I do know that if you are in the parking lot by one of these stores just prior to them opening you see a certain kind of zombie lurking, waiting to go in to buy today's poison.

I think the state, especially the old line members of the legislature, see them as a substantial cash cow. You privatize the stores, you need to find about $500 Million in income to the state in the form of increased taxes either from privately run liquor stores, sales or income taxes. 
 

I'd much rather have the ABC stores than see the personal property tax on my car go up again.

I'm old enough to remember when liquor by the drink was a big issue in restaurants and such. It's a long slog to bring the region into the 21st century

been living with this crap forever in Ann Arbor, where I can't drive down my block at more than 5 mph without risking the suspension of my car but we have a resolutions on every international issue and send garbage trucks to Ortega. I pretty much vote against every incumbent at every primary (the GOP doesn't bother running in the generals). The odd thing is the mayor wont be happy until every block in town has 18 stores on it, which is a weirdly paradoxical set of philosophies (well it becomes logical enough when you see who pays his way.....).
